[News] Justin Tucker Signs Franchise Tender

17 posts in this topic

sounds good to me but if he goes the whole season without missing one kick than he may want part ownership of the team on top of being the highest paid kicker. haha

Come on you little jerk, just sign a long term deal. I would think the process wouldn't be overwhelming given the highest paid kicker still makes peanuts in comparison to other positions...........but we could use a little more cap space

You do realize the franchise offer he's getting paid this year is probably less than what he would get if he had a long term deal.

So him signing the franchise offer helps our cap situation better than a deal.

Haha, I was just joking. And a long term deal is way better for the franchise than a franchise tag. The hits get spread out and only a portion is guaranteed. Also, by paying him this year we save money, cause I am sure his value goes even higher next year

That's real nice. He is not a jerk. I'm sure when the time comes he'll sign. It's his future not ours.

Maybe.

Gostkowski's deal, which is pretty standard, had a year 1 cap hit of $3.6M.

Ravens could easily structure the deal with a $4.5M/year average that only has a maybe $3M cap hit, meaning we'd free up about $1.5M against the current year cap from the franchise tag amount.

Nothing major of course, but if we needed like $1-1.5M in cap for some reason, signing him to an extension is an easy way to do it.

i am sure Oz will try to reach a long term deal by the July 15th date, this just buys him time to focus on other signings, and the draft...

I couldn't agree more. Locking up K.O is top priority right now and putting Tucker on the tag buys an extended amount of time. Talks can pick up after Ozzie is finished creating the roster.

Yep, Let the FO focus on free agency that starts next week and the draft afterwards, that'll give them all of May and June to deal w/ JT.

Well... if he has a perfect score card at the end, he will deserve it ;)

Is this an exclusive or a non-exclusive tag?

Unsure, my guess would be non-exclusive though.

With a kicker... not sure it really matters.

According to the contract amount, $4.5 million, it is an exclusive-rights franchise tag. The nonexclusive amount is $4.1 million.

True, they could do that, just might and probably will. I prefer to call it the old "kick the can down the road to dead money oblivion" brand of doing business. Then, sit back and watch some good, well-loved players waltz out the front door, since we can't afford to keep them, because of....you guessed it, dead money/cap constraints. Then we go shopping for some old washed up (cheap) free agents to "fill some holes". Don't you just love it?

Not really the case with a kicker, considering the difference in a year 1 cap hit vs a year 4 cap hit would be like $2M or less, so not the kind of impact that stops you from signing players.

Dead money usually comes from prorated bonuses, which would be very small for a kicker.

Flacco deal was a bit excessive in terms of backloqding, but most of the deals we have are pretty standard structure league wide.

Basically, anytime you sign somebody to a substantial contract, cutting them within the first 2-3 years of the deal will yield significant dead money, regardless of structure.
