Everyone continues to say we are tight on the cap. Why? The cap went up 12 million, we saved 6 million on Joe's contract and another 4.6 million releasing
Canty and Smith. Someone please explain.....

Dead money has a lot to do with that.

I see a lot of guys anticipate us picking Myles Jack to replace Smith. Isn't he more a DE than an ILB though?

The guy is athletic enough to play almost any where on the field, and I have read some scouting reports that think he should play DE/OLB. The only knock on him is that he doesn't have the length that most OLBs do which is important to create separation from the long armed LTs. Dumervillhe is undersized though, and he does well but he also has unusually long arms for a guy who is 5'11".

Here's a good source...

http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/baltimore-ravens/

Doesn't currently account for the Canty "release", so top 51 will probably be around $144M currently after the Canty cut. Cap is right around $155M, so we've got about $11-12M in cap space right now.

Keep in mind though that the Ravens will tender RFAs and also have to "slot in" a portion of their cap space for new draft picks. Those two things eat into that cap space figure considerably.

Keep in mind that most players contracts cost more in 2016 than they did in 2015, so while the cap went up, so did the cost of players. Joe himself costs about $8M more than he did last year, so he wipes out the majority of the cap increase as it is. Jimmy Smith's cap number went up $6M year over year, so between him and Joe, you spent all the increased cap space on players you already had already.

Flacco's price went up $14M this year until he signed the extension which only saved us $6M.
there were 52 other people on the roster with contracts whose cap numbers also increased. Contract numbers dont stay static  while the cap number rises.

Jack can literally play everywhere, even RB. Thats how good of an athlete he is. He can play ILB/OLB and probably even strong safety. I think he would probably be ILB for us. He is probably the best athlete in this draft and would really help our defense.
