[News] Report: Ravens Release Veteran LB Daryl Smith

We just created a huge hole in the middle of our defense for $2.6M.I hope we spend it well.

There's no "big hole" there - Zach Orr could step up and do a decent job today if he needed to. We know of Ozzie's 80/20 rule: if you have a player who offers 80% of another player's performance for 20% of his money, cut the expensive guy and replace him with the cheaper one. That's exactly how Ngata was replaced by Brandon Williams - and that's now Zach Orr may replace Daryl Smith.

But, who knows - Smith may even be back.

Kendrick Lewis should have been the first cut. That dude blows.

he's cheap. I'm thinking Elam might be next even though I know Ozzie doesn't like to give up on high draft picks.

Don't forget, we can always resign him. We do that just about every year. Cut an older veteran and sign him back at a lower pay.

Great point here

I saw Zach Orr and Mosley cover last year and they couldn't cover my little sister. All teams will have to do is send their receivers downfield and throw to their tight ends and backs who will have 3 steps on the defender. + So here we go making cap room because we overpaid Flacco again. Yes teams want quarterbacks but if we released Flacco do you think anyone else would pay him $120 million after his production the last 3 years, and if they did, there is a team we can beat. And yes, people will blame the fact that Joe didn't have the talent around him but catch-22, can't afford support players when you overpay your qb. If Flacco has a horrible year again this year, people will be booing him off the field, demanding money back, and calling for Ozzie's head, like they have been the last 2 years (mostly because of Flacco). Why couldn't we do more with incentives for Flacco and tied it to production instead of just giving him the keys to the bank and let him choose. I don't think losing Flacco would have been as bad as people pretend. If you concentrate on defense, like we have always done and get a good young qb, like we did with Flacco, we would be fine. What decided the last super bowl, defense or offense? It was clearly defense.

The Ravens tried focusing on defense without a good qb, and we went 7 years without winning a playoff game. That was with Ed Reed and Ray Lewis in their primes. With Flacco, we have been SB contenders 6 of 8 years and won more playoff games than anyone. The last time he had a reasonably healthy offense around him, he was once again the best qb in the playoffs, and he put us in a position to knock off the SB champs. The reason for our recent struggles has been the flukish amount of injuries, not Flacco.

Zach Orr is not a star in the waiting,IMO.Daryl Smith gave us 121 tackles,3 sacks,3 passes defensed and 1 int last year. And last year was his "bad" year if you want to call it that.If Orr could give us 80 percent of what Daryl can, then that means you're calling him the next Dannell Ellerbe.

That's a good point you made about him maybe coming back at a lower price.I was so shocked that we cut him that I hadn't considered that.We did the same thing with Canty last year.

Well I said The Ravens will draft Myles Jack with their first round pick. I think that pick is shaping up a bit. Only issue is he could be gone before they pick at #6. If Osemele stays put I see the Ravens trading up to #2 or #3 to ensure getting either Jack or Ramsey. Cleveland would be a good trade because dropping to #6 and gaining some picks would help build a stronger roster sooner and they can still confidently get their QB. Chargers are a 50/50 they would trade back but they would probably covet extra picks as well. IF A.Brown isn't motivated enough yet he better get motivated ASAP. If K.O. leaves then Ronnie Stanley is probably a lock at #6.

i would be on board with Myles Jack. From what I've seen and read he's great at coverage and that's what they need. Move CJ to Daryl spot and Myles to coverage. 2 young studs manning the middle of the field would be nice.

Why would we drop elam right now? It wouldnt Really clear any cap room As hes still on his rookie deal so theres No point.

he's coming off a major injury and wasn't playing well and is due 2.1 million would save 1.3 million. Is he really worth 2 million bucks ????

We all saw this one coming. Have to really appreciate what DSmith had brought to BMORE... and wish him the best... but he was clearly losing a step. Time for Arthur Brown to step up... (would NOT mind seeing us bring James Larunitis in to play beside CJ however)!

Daryl was one of my favorite players over the last couple years, but it's hard to deny that he's lost a step too many. If we're being honest, Ray Lewis was in the same boat his last couple years, but no way were the Ravens going to release an icon. In both cases, however, we lose a lot of on-field intelligence and film study. If they can re-sign him later for less money, I really hope they do.

Yeah - he was like Todd Heap: everyone loved him, and everyone hated see him cut - but deep down we knew it was the right decision...

I think there's a definite chance he'll be brought back though.

I wonder if Arthur Brown gets one last chance to play, if Orr becomes the starter, or if we use the Draft/FA to Daryl's replacement. This is why the offseason is interesting. It just takes too long to develop...

Agreed, if not mistaken Orr is a restricted free agent. Will be interesting to see if they keep him. I'm assuming they will or resign d Smith. He has been huge for us and for the development of Mosley I'm sure

I see a lot of guys anticipate us picking Myles Jack to replace Smith. Isn't he more a DE than an ILB though?

i get the move, but not in favor of it....D.Smith has been the most consistent ILBer since we got him....Not so sure Orr, A.Brown, or MClellan can replace his production...Or maybe we reisgn him for less...

Agreed stix!  Some how I am not feeling to great about this move at this point. D. Smith played with injuries for most of last season and still gave it all he had every game leading the team in tackles. With his work ethic, experience and leadership he exemplifies what it means to "play like a Raven" and I still think he has more left in the tank.    For everything Daryl has done for the Ravens, I sure was hoping for him to go out on a higher note.  He is one of the most under-rated players in the NFL today.   I too hope we can re-sign him for less.

Yep, he's a RFA.

Everyone continues to say we are tight on the cap. Why? The cap went up 12 million, we saved 6 million on Joe's contract and another 4.6 million releasing
Canty and Smith. Someone please explain.....

He most definitely will be picked up by another team, but I wouldn't mind seeing him back here at all. He did a hell of a job for us since he has been here.

Thanks for heads up, would assume they either sign him / resign D Smith for less / or possibly both unless they're finally comfortable giving A Brown a shot
