[News] Report: Ravens Release Veteran LB Daryl Smith

I remember saying this guy should have been a pro bowler in 2013. He is still a good LB. Teams who have struggling D should sign him.

I saw Zach Orr and Mosley cover last year and they couldn't cover my little sister. All teams will have to do is send their receivers downfield and throw to their tight ends and backs who will have 3 steps on the defender. + So here we go making cap room because we overpaid Flacco again. Yes teams want quarterbacks but if we released Flacco do you think anyone else would pay him $120 million after his production the last 3 years, and if they did, there is a team we can beat. And yes, people will blame the fact that Joe didn't have the talent around him but catch-22, can't afford support players when you overpay your qb. If Flacco has a horrible year again this year, people will be booing him off the field, demanding money back, and calling for Ozzie's head, like they have been the last 2 years (mostly because of Flacco). Why couldn't we do more with incentives for Flacco and tied it to production instead of just giving him the keys to the bank and let him choose. I don't think losing Flacco would have been as bad as people pretend. If you concentrate on defense, like we have always done and get a good young qb, like we did with Flacco, we would be fine. What decided the last super bowl, defense or offense? It was clearly defense.

That just tells me Ozzie will get a ILBr in the draft. Maybe Scooby Wright, Kendrell Brothers in mid rounds.. Transition the Defense into young cornerstones for the next generation

I wonder if Arthur Brown gets one last chance to play, if Orr becomes the starter, or if we use the Draft/FA to Daryl's replacement. This is why the offseason is interesting. It just takes too long to develop...

Loved the guy. So, Arthur Brown next? Nah. If Jalen Ramsey is off the board, the Ravens will draft Myles Jack or trade down a few spots and take Reggie Ragland.

Great football player. Would have been nice if he could have experienced more success with us.

hoping Myles falls to us.

Okay but what decided OUR last super bowl? Joe's historic run to and through it. Also, no one is calling for Ozzie Newsome's head. The man is as safe in the league as any GM. The problem this year was injuries. He will fix the defensive issues in the draft, including replacing Darryl Smith, while still having a franchise QB on contract for 5 more years. Or would you rather be in the same boat as the Browns, searching for a QB annually just to even be mediocre?

Im hoping for Wright or Brothers in the 3rd. Id rather grab a guy like Buckner and have a physical freak, much like a Kalais Campbell for Arizona, than have to spend our 6th overall on a guy coming off a season ending injury. A La Myles Jack.

@fusuymada dude the extension from Flacco has nothing to do with getting Daryl Smith cut. The Extension free cap room so why would they cut Daryl Smith then. They cut him because they wanted to free more room for other needs. They could've kept Daryl Smith if they wanted too.

Daryl Simth was a great addition - let's hope he ends up back in purple.

If not, hwoever, Zachary Orr is one of my favourite under-the-radar young players. I would not at all be surprised if he had his brekout season in 2016 - whether or not Smith is back.

i get the move, but not in favor of it....D.Smith has been the most consistent ILBer since we got him....Not so sure Orr, A.Brown, or MClellan can replace his production...Or maybe we reisgn him for less...

You do realize that last year we had TWO 14 point leads over the eventual super bowl champs at their place? That was because of Flacco. His cap numbers have been more than manageable the last 3 years, and with the cap rising every year, they will continue to be very manageable. Also, do you remember how many QBs we have had before Flacco? And the trouble we had with the position? Sorry, but if you want to have a good QB in this league, you are going to be paying $20 million plus. Sam Bradford is getting paid $18 million a year, and he is not a good QB. I would also guarantee that if we released him, he would DEFINITELY make $120 mil+ on the open market. And yes the defense decided the superbowl, but who got us there and won the MVP? Flacco. He has beeen the best QB in the playoffs since 2010, no arguments about it. Flacco deserves to get paid, and we had no other option than to extend him. You should be thankful that he agreed to do it (even though it was smart anyway on his end). If you want a good QB, you will have to pay them. You can't play musical chairs and expect to win.

The Browns have the most cap space in the NFL on a yearly basis, and no QBs. Hows that worked out?

Hate to see D. Smith released. Loved what he brought to this team, but its time to move on. He could be brought back, but I would guess after the draft at the earliest. I think this makes Myles Jack a real possibility.

Smith is a class act and will be missed. He is on the downhill side of his career, however, and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets re-signed later at a lower number should the FO feel the need for help on the inside after the draft.

Given how Zach Orr, despite undrafted, played much more than Brown, I guess it's gonna Be Zach Orr, if Smith isn't back.

Was a very under rated guy, glad we had him.   Now enters,  my man,  Myles Jack.  Hopefully

Yep - or more exactly, we didn't "cut" him, but we didn't pick up his option.

The result is the same though.

Don't forget, we can always resign him. We do that just about every year. Cut an older veteran and sign him back at a lower pay.

Enjoyed watching you play and be a team leader these past years. A true person on and off the field. Good luck to you and your family , Daryl.
