With our Head Coach spending all those years as a special teams coach and with our ST being #1 in the league last year Tuck is a major piece of that puzzle.

Good going. Franchising Tucker gives the Ravens some leverage to negotiate a fair deal and not end up over paying for his services. In this what have you done for me lately, Tucker didn’t do great this past year beyond 50 yds. So, hopefully we get a fair deal with him and make him a Raven for years to come.

Tagging a player is always a gamble, if he has a insane year his demand will only go up, if he doesn't it goes down....But IMO i am betting on him to be better next year as he has been clutch for us, and for the most part consistent...Plus we do have a history of tagging them now, and signing them long term before the deadline....

Even if he has an insane year, as a kicker, his price has a limited ceiling.

Smart move. If you have to franchise tag someone, a kicker is the most financially beneficial position to do so. And Tucker is a heck of a kicker. Hopefully they will be able to come to a long-term agreement before the start of the season.

every year the cap goes up, and so does salaries....not by much, but it will go up....

logical move to franchise him and work out a deal before the deadline once all the other player contracts have been dealt with so we know what is left in cap $$

The salary cap is what makes football so competitive. Every team has the chance to spend the same amount of money. In baseball the teams that have bigger fan bases are more likely to win because they can spend whatever they want. In football anybody can win it. A team that is ranked last in one year can make the playoffs the next. This is why football is great. Its tough to be a small market team and be competitive in baseball. Especially in the AL east where the Yankees and Red Sox have absurd amounts of money to throw at players.

never been a fan of franchising kickers.
good kickers are important, but to me, its not difficult enough to find a decent one to bother wasting a tag on a kicker.

we dont really have anybody else it makes sense to use it on though, so its whatever this time

Really doesn't mean much, since difference between average kicker and great kicker is like $2M a year or less.

You are right, usually it is not worth placing the tag on a kicker, but this season we really have no one worth using the tag on considering our cap situation. Since we would actually save a little bit of money by placing the tag on Tucker and we are not using it on anyone else, it actually makes sense this season. Every little bit of saving helps and by using it, could actually help us in working out a fair long term deal.
