Updated: Trent Richardson signed by Ravens

No one signing him at all last year is definitely a bad sign, he wasn't in great shape in the first place, but having the year off... I don't think benefitted him. Definitely not a position need but doesn't hurt too much, not like he is a sought after player, he will come cheap

Richardson showed incredible explosion, balance, and power at Alabama. He brings a completely different skill set because he isn't as small or shifty as Forsett and he can't hit the edge like Forsett, but he can certainly run you over and if he gets into the open field, he's got some real wiggle to his game. Not to mention he was a really dominant pass blocker in college. Plus, he brings hands on third down and even caught over 50 passes in his rookie season.

Where I worry, and this is always a worry for Alabama running backs, is that he just had massive holes to run through wherever he was first directed to run to. He shows the speed and lateral agility to make those cutbacks and hit the hole, but he has shown no vision whatsoever. He shows really good patience behind the LOS, but he tends to be too patient. What I mean is that he dances around behind there and isn't decisive enough to just hit the hole and go or find that crease and explode through it. I think that goes back to just not having good vision and seeing the creases or the blocks and where they're developing. Is vision something you can really coach up? Serious question. I didn't play running back, so I don't know how much of that is just natural in the NFL and how much of it is taught.

Worst case scenario, the Ravens cut him with practically no cap implications, if any. Best case scenario, Trent regains his confidence, the Ravens improve his vision, and he becomes everything he was supposed to be when he came out of Alabama.

The Ravens have a good history of developing backs, so we'll see how it works out.

I look at this move as a non vote of confidence for the current rb's currently on this roster. Taliaffero and West especially. Forsett maybe the only one that sticks. lol. I do believe the Ravens will add a running back in the draft or free agency aside from the Richardson acquisition. Richardson to me is dumpster fire pick thru that will be answered during training camp. He'll have to take very little money as he has no cards to play in the game of do you want to play poker game. I'm looking for more surprises as this came out of left field.

Taliaferro was a draft pick who's had some unfortunate injuries and West hasn't had a complete year in our system, neither are going anywhere. Highly doubt we draft a RB maybe practice squad at the most but just wait and see how training camp goes.

I doubt anything comes of this signing, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it.  It's kicking the tires on a guy that was once regarded as a top prospect.  If it works out, then you got a good deal.  If it doesn't, you cut him and have no ramifications.

I clearly remember him missing a 15 foot hole in front of him for an easy score only to run around the RT and get a yard in the play. Absolutely no field vision. He must've gotten lazy after going pro because he was an absolute monster in college

We should give him the benefit of the doubt because there was a reason he was picked #3 overall. Come on he went to Cleveland and Oakland the Black Holes of the NFL. Look at Cleveland, they pick in top 10 year after year and they still suck.

Not to mention his offensive lines (I heavily emphasize that "S") in Indy were absolutely dreadful. I think he has serious potential, but he's got some issues that are vital for a back (no vision, isn't decisive) that if he can't iron out, will end his career.

I agree. Let's see what he's got. Doesn't cost us much and who knows? We are all about Redemption and here's his shot let's hope it's a good one. Besides Justin Forsett floundered for years before becoming a Raven why not Trent finally live up to his draft status and who knows we could be looking like a genius by the end.

Couldn't we have just gave Ray Rice his second chance instead? I just don't get it, I would have been more happier if we would have signed Tim Tebow over Trent Richardson.

Meh.

Worry about him in September if he is on the team.  Right now it means nothing to me.

I was a running back, a part of vision is natural but it can be taught. It's just like any discipline at any other skill position. It takes work, you have to understand what your lineman are doing and what different scenarios look like. The lineman could be getting whooped but you have to know if he can buy you a half second to get through there. It's a fun spot lol.

dont see the issue.

at worst he gets cut , at best he revives his career like the last dude who first got a shot with us and then got traded to the cowgirls.

unless he got a ridiculous contract i got 0 issues with this.

Pretty much this. I'd be surprised if he even counted against the cap under the rule of 51.

Yeah. Some comments I've read make me think we've just signed him to be our lead RB after cutting Forsett, Allen, Taliaferro and West after holding a bizarre press conference that Richardson is getting 4 million a year for 10 years fully guaranteed. This guy looks like a camp body and nobody has been cut for him yet.

If he gets some ludicrous deal beyond the minimum (which I sincerely doubt) I can't see how he's not JAG trying to make the team. I think theseoverreactions are because he's formerly from Alabama and Ozzie has connections there.

Not every signing amounts to anything.

Exactly.  The last RB we got who started in Cleveland had many fans on this forum.  Besides, February is too early to be complaining about the team's, at best, #3 RB who may not even see the end of the preseason here.  So long as he's not making more than vet minimum, it's not important

Dude Cleveland sucks the motivation out a lot of good players and I didn't even know of that situation, Same for my cousin T.West Cleveland traded him and then the Titans didn't even play him play him so it crushed him a bit when they released him but things workout and now they both have a chip on there shoulders thanks to the browns

That's pretty crazy that they have such similar stories. I'm glad your cousin ended up in Baltimore. I was a huge fan during the draft process and was super bummed when Cleveland snagged him.

Trent is the fat version of 2015 Eddie Lacy.

Have you seen Trent Richardson? He is huge but it's not fat related. The guy got too big because he has too much muscle and it hurt his fluidity.

Yeah, agree with all of that. Way too much is being made of this. Teams often make two or three of these signings a week during the regular season.

But yeah, if he's getting paid anything more than the minimum (or anything that actually registers against the cap) I'd be disappointed. But even then, it's not like we're making the one big move that's going to define our offseason.
