I like him: great run stopper, tough, hard worker, reliable, good locker room presence. But he is pretty clearly not a pass rusher and our defense needs that badly. . In other words, not good enough to justify Dumervil-level money, and too expensive to keep as merely an edge setter.

I don't see a story here. It's up to the players if they stay or not. It's not like he's not going to get a offer from us. It's up to them to take it or leave it. We don't overpay and if some other team wants to do that, so be it.

Only reason Ozzie is non-committal is because Upshaw's agent wants far more money than Upshaw is worth to the Ravens. Somewhere, somehow the Ravens are willing to lose a couple or 3 Ravens players to better deals with other teams to help with the compensatory pick formula and perhaps Upshaw is one that leaves.

@merryjam he shouldn't be expensive at all to sign. All he does is he a great runner and edge rusher that's it. He doesn't rush the QB well. It's gonna be his agent fault if he's not a Raven next year try to get more money then he's worth.

Nailed it! Upshaw's overall value is just not that of a superstar. He is a very solid dependable player for what he brings. My guess is he will ultimately come back. Most players that left elsewhere for bigger pay days didn't enjoy the same kind of success after the fact. Personally I do want to see him back. He's like the anti-terrible towel for Pittsburgh games. Ben knows.

agreed, was trying to think of any teams in need of an edge setting olb but most want someone to rush the qb. He works well here stopping the run and keeping Doom fresh

He played his role well. He stopped the run and held the edge. Would have been nice to have him get 10 or so sacks a season, but thats just not his game.

put this down, the Ravens will regret losing Upshaw. He isnt a rah rah guy but he does his job. My guess he will be in Steelers colors next season.

I agree we should keep him if we can, but I don't think we can. I just think teams with lots of cap room can pay Upshaw more than he's really worth.  Look at how much money Ellerbe and Kruger got when they left.

Upshaw is one those guys that gets appreciated most after fans see the hole that he's left. He may not be a superstar but a guy that can get the job done and stay that healthy is no easy find. He's worth what he can negotiate to whatever team is willing to bring him in. I wish him all the best.
