It gets too crazy quoting back and forth. Final 5 is a chance to put your best bid out there and hope no one takes it farther. It's the responsibility of each GM to go through the final 5 bids and see if one of their earlier bids got bested so you can go to bid-off.

Exactly right. To piggyback off your point, considering the sheer volume of bids that come in during the Final Five, it would be a bit of a nightmare to have to go through each player afterwards to see who was the highest bidder and which bids were invalid. And there would likely be a ton of invalid bids because of that.
