[News] Late For Work 2/22: What Is Nick Boyle's Future With Ravens?

Ravens must stop paying guys that are not on the field. Whether because of always injured, suspensions, or poor play. That's a formula to be 3rd in the AFC North. You are not going to catch Steelers and Bengals paying guys who can't play while they eat up cap space so you can't improve the team. What did Asa add after all those suspensions? Nothing, and was eventually cut because he was outperformed by someone the Ravens got off the street.

Well, there's two different things here:

1. If you are saying that the Ravens should stop signing players to contracts who have been injured/suspended in the past, then that's an accurate criticism.

2. If you are saying that once a player gets injured that the Ravens should no longer pay his contract, then that would be a violation of NFL rules, and its not allowed. Most NFL contracts are guaranteed for injury, so if a player gets injured, they get paid while they are injured.

I believe its actually a violation of NFL rules to cut a player who fails a physical... you typically have to waive them with an "injury settlement", meaning you cut them but pay them at the same time.

question is , will this be the last year of cap hell for the Ravens? Boyle should be cut, he has talent but he cannot be counted on. TE is a strong position for the Ravens.

Its not that he is a Ravens taking stuff , its the fact the the bug dummy got caught. It Ravens are going to have that on their team be smart and don't get caught.

Cutting Boyle would make no sense. He is making almost no money/his cap hit is negligible; he won't take up a roster spot during his suspension; he has a lot of potential if he can just stop getting suspended; he would be cheap to re-sign in a few years because of his susp. history; and at-worst, they can cut him after his suspension is up if they ultimately decide he isn't worth a roster spot.

Regarding the cap, part of me would just like to get all of this bad money off the books ASAP so that we can set our cap right for 2017 and onward. I like Oz, but he has been pushing money into the future a little too often lately, such as with the Webb and Suggs restructures (not the prior extensions), plus the bloated signing bonuses. Unfortunately, if we did this, it would mean our roster in 2017 would likely not be very competitive. But I fully expect Oz to keep doing what he's been doing, amortizing bad contracts by only eating dead money a bit at a time. This year it will be Pitta, maybe Monroe, and doubtfully Webb.

You can tell when there isn't a lot of news going on. More than half the article is tweets. As for Boyle, cut him. We don't need any more idiots on the team than we already have.
