[News] Leslie Frazier's Plan To Increase Turnovers On Defense

13 posts in this topic

I knew Frazier was a smart pick up by our organization with his experience. I did not expect to like what he has to say this much already though. He is really growing on me from what he is saying in these press conferences.

The #1 thing that has to happen in order to create more turnovers is that our pass rush has to be better. There is definite correlation btwn our lowest sack year also matching our lowest turnover year. QB pressure creates such havoc that they throw early, throw errant and that's what creates turnovers

This is a lame article about a lame interview. You think previous coaches didn't run punchout drills and coach a "takeaway mentality??" Or do we think that Ed Reed's instincts plus his avid film study are something that can be coached??  Ed and Ray took it upon themselves to study film above and beyond what was usual or expected; that knowledge fed their field intelligence, and guided their instincts.

Turnovers happen when the defense overpowers the offense, puts them off-guard. That almost never happened last season because we couldn't pressure the quarterback. If you don't force an NFL QB to do things like throw off the back foot or while on the run, then he's gonna be accurate almost every time. If you can't set the edge and contain a runner, then you're not gonna have a brute nearby who's strong enough to pull the ball out of his grasp. And most pertinent - no secondary can possibly do its job if the QB gets all the time in the world to find someone open.

I honestly don't think the secondary was as bad as everyone else seems to think - at least not during the times their personnel was healthy - they simply had an impossible job to do.  Our pass rush was almost nonexistent, and that was the root of our defensive troubles.  Not anyone's fault, really, that's just how it shook out.

Agree 100% - lack of pass rush was the BIGGEST reason for a bad year. However, having an experienced coach back there is much better than having a rookie DB coach. So there is room for improvement just on the prep work alone - breaking down film, conveying what you see on film to the play on the field. Look at it this way, ever had one teacher better than another in school? Even though it's up to you to decide how hard you study, work, etc. - some teachers were able to translate/communicate it better. More often than not, that wasn't a student teacher.

Rushing four no more than five and play everyone else back leads to turnovers! The Ravens did that against the squeelers and had how many turnovers, two and a possible INTs! Daryl Smith was all over the field and it was a simple fix DONT BLITZ for now! Spreading out the Defense creates turnovers like against the squeelers and it isn't a hard equation to solve! All haters to what I said look at the squeelers game over again plus the Super Bowl the broncos rush four sometimes three and shut cam down!

My observation is that when our Db's have been in position which is not often they fail to get the head around and locate the ball, too many times at the time that the receiver is ready to catch the ball they are still trailing with their back to the pass, impossible to intercept what you can't see, we need Db's who turn and located the ball IMO.

I hope he knows when we mean turnovers we mean interceptions as well. A big reason we played so badly was the secondary did not communicate well and could not catch a cold let alone a football.

He's not going to divulge the exact methods he will use to implement the changes. That would be foolish. He's just talking generally to not tip any hats.

I'd be very happy if we got a lot of INT's this coming season. Webb, hopefully, will be soaking up this information like a sponge (others as well).

"Cincinnati Bengals from 2003 to 2004 where he helped turn the unit into a group that increased takeaways from 24 in 2003 to 36 in 2004." Lets hope he still has it.

I say give some extra incentives for turn overs.
Bountie$ paid to player$ for strip$, recoverie$ and interception$ !
Start a compitition between the Offense and Defense.
Start getting creative in fixing what's been lacking, Coaches !
