[News] Eisenberg: Similarities In Ray Lewis And Peyton Manning's Last Ride

16 posts in this topic

The article was supposed to be about Ray and Peyton - why tarnish it by commenting on Cam at the end? He showed he's still a punk at heart and can't lead (or fail in this case) with dignity.

Newton behaves like a petulant child when he loses. That is what being a petulant child is all about really. Can't lose graciously ever. That really is going to hold him back when all is said and done. Nobody cares Cam. Grow the heck up! 26 means you have a fully formed brain for God's sake.

Before everyone throws the next guy (Newton) under the bus, stop. Realize as he was being interviewed, within earshot he could overhear the Broncos players being interviewed declaring their superiority and also had very little time to lets things soak in regain composure. IF anything they could at least have moved the press stations further away for such a big game. I'm not condoning walking off, but be honest. If you had just lost a season long run at the prize then came up short had only a couple mins to begin to deal with the situation, how can you tell me you would just sit through an interview having to hear more thrash talk while under the scrutiny of the press dissecting your emotions and thoughts. That's just adding salt on a fresh wound. A better idea would have been to tell the reporters to he would continue the coverage from over there (some point out of earshot).

Just about everyone else who loses, seems to be able to handle it like a man. And by the way, I didn't hear much TRASH TALK from the Broncos. Hopefully Newton will grow up someday.

I don't dislike Cam but he's flakey and has a weak psyche, that's hard to respect.

Put the pressure on and some QB's show their true colors, folding up like paper.

I hope Peyton doesn't pull a Brett Favre. Ray was criticized for announcing his retirement. I respect that he put all his chips on the table instead of playing the cat and mouse game. Peyton's done. As far as Cam goes, he needs to learn humility. He bragging is not too different than Rodgers title belt celebrating or how Favre would carrying on during a game celebrating. The different is he can't pout after defeat.

I seem to remember Bill Belichick refusing to do interviews after their loss to us in the 2012 AFC championship. And of course you couldn't here it, they weren't mic d up. http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl-news/4694212-cam-newton-interview-walked-out-chris-harris-broncos-panthers-super-bowl

Ray Lewis meant a lot more to this team than Manning did. Not in term's of play on the field, but instead motivation. He always made everyone around him better. Manning only cared about dropping some poor taste Budweiser ads.

I disagree. Mannig did that too in his own way. He can be fiery too, be just doesn't sermonize like Rev, Ray-Ray. There are a lot of similarities between their final season (especially the tome missed and timely return due to serious injury) if Manning does choose to hang'em up.

However, it was far more classy and epic that the best inside linebacker to play the game said at the beginning of the season that he's retire and went out with a bang. Bettis chose to call it quits after at the beginning of the playoffs and Elway did so after a short period of reflection after his last SB win. To me Lewis' "last hurrah" was the most epic as the team rallied around him and won despite being an underdog every step of of the way in a storybook season.

Great article. It is not often these "Hollywood" type stories come along. Real life is usually too random for that. Here's to Peyton. I hope he does retire while he is healthy and on a high note.

And here's hoping for SB win #3 for Joe in a year!

No who has played this game has motivated players at much a Ray Lewis. Look at how many coaches he promoted under his wing, look at how many players got big contracts while playing under Ray Lewis. You don't see teams stealing defensive guys now. Manning was just a benefactor of a dominant defense. He played awful and they still won. He didn't get them fired up. The Denver offense played horrible minus a few nice running plays. The defense stole the show. That game goes to Wade Phillips, John Elway and the bunch of wild dogs getting after it.

Lewis is the ultimate motivator period. No comparison with Manning and the situation that he is in. He should retire and go out on top. Hanging around, sitting on the bench just doesn't fit his competitive spirit. It will be interesting to see how free agency actually effects the Broncos in this off season. That can be a huge factor in their chance to repeat. Manning will be looking at that as he contemplates retiring or being a backup QB for another year or 2. His ability at his age has to be a major concern for him at this point in his career.

Just going to disagree here - again.  Ray's speeches certainly had an effect on some of his team, but remember Flacco saying that they were entertaining but did nothing for him?  Listen, I love me some Ray Lewis as much as the next Bmore fan, but there are many different ways to get your team motivated.  Manning is a perfectionist and there is tons of footage and documentation working with teammates to get their game to the next level.  As I said, he doesn't sermonize which Lewis did and created a culture of "destiny" on defense.  That worked here, but is not as imprintable elsewhere when you have a franchise QB leading the team.  When the QBs you had as leaders were Testaverde, Jim Harbaugh, Banks, Redman, Grback, Dilfer, Boller, Blake, McNair and a young, reserved Joe Flacco over 12 years you just might get a defensive star to lead the team.  Could've been different if they drafted Hasselbeck, Culpepper, Aaron Brooks, Pennington, Bulger, or Brady who they all had legit chances to draft.
