[News] Late For Work 1/27: Will Ravens Use Top Pick On Wide Receiver Again?

54 posts in this topic

I think that the 2000 team was a beast! 2012 team featured Flacco's abilities, but that year (as in every year thereafter) the defense struggled too often. It sounds kind of funny, but the offense is the strength of the Ravens now......10 years ago people would laugh at you if you said that. GO RAVENS!  (BTW forum is a bit confusing to comment on news blogs, not sure I like it, my 2 cents)

“What happens in free agency will definitely influence the Ravens’ draft decisions,” Brown said.

How can that be, if we take the Best Player Available?

Draft in the first round those positions we have excelled in drafting therefore guaranteeing a quality pick. No one would say that Ozzie has done poorly in selecting linebackers, defensive linemen, running backs or offensive linemen. We need to stay with our strengths and draft those individuals we will be successful drafting, we cant afford another miss like we have had with Elam, Perriman, Brooks, etc... I know we are never aggressive in free agency, but there is a first for everything and with Perriman, a good Free agent receiver and steve smith and we will have a good receiver group with Aiken, Campanero and Waller filling it out. I would say cut Campanaro as a former 7th rounder he virtually costs nothing so lets at least see if he makes it or not.

The part you're missing is, the Ravens will select the best player available that can fill a Ravens need.  If the Ravens get a WR during free agency that they really like, their need to pick a WR who's the BPA at 6th is no longer an option.  Prime example, if a QB is the BPA when it's their time to pick, obviously they're not selecting him.

About Ngata wanting to stay as a Lion. Good for you Haloti. Nice way to antagonize the fans and the team that gave you an opportunity and cheered for you through thick and thin. This is the second time you've talked up the Lions team and its coaching. Somehow, the way you say it demeans your old team.

I know the main needs for the Ravens are: OT, CB, WR. OLB / DE and Safety I could honestly see Oz take any one of these positions with the sixth pick but anything is possible and we have all seen some strange things happen in the draft.

Can't see them pulling a WR in the 1st. Either CB or elite pass rusher would be my first picks. Get a shut down D up front & in secondary. How many games did we lose because the D couldn't hold a 4th Qtr lead?

I agree. What is going on, another unnecessary upgrade?

Drafting Treadwell will have us set for the future.Steve Smith WILL retire next year and it's smarter to use this opportunity we have now to draft his replacement. You probably won't be able to find another receiver like Treadwell when we go back to drafting late in the draft and assuming a team allows a receiver like that to enter free agency,we wouldn't have the cap space to sign them anyway. The only way Treadwell won't be the smartest move is if somehow Ramsey is there at six or if by the grace of Jehovah Bosa falls to atleast four and we have a chance to trade up and draft him.

May the Gods be with us on draft day to select a franchise player or two. I think Ozzie, Eric, Joe and the rest of the scouts should focus on truly the best player available that is a sure shot to succeed and thrive in our system. We need a starter for the first 2 rounds, preferably impact starters this year and into the future.

Panthers may be the better team and deserve to win the Super Bowl, but I sure would liketo see Peyton to go out on top like Ray did.

How tall is Laquon Treadwell? How fast is he? Why do the pundits think he is a great prospect? If I was writing this article, I'd provide a lot more info.

Anyway, I don't see

One can only hope.
Its an awesome opportunity to grab some real top tier talent on the offensive side of the ball for once and finally actually stabilize our offense for a while to come if Breshad pans out as well. For the next 5 years at least we'd have a franchise QB, two outside weapons, at least one elite offensive lineman and a decent RB or two; we'd finally have the foundation of a great offense and wouldnt have to worry about it being traded, retiring, or hitting free agency at the end of every season.
We can actually be dangerous, maybe claim some division titles and a bye or two in the playoffs.

sidenote: i like the new comments UI.

This article isnt about Lequon Treadwell or draft prospects in particular, and the answers to your questions are very googleable. Minus the 40 time, if you search for his name you'll get all that info right on the results page. dont even have to click a link.

I say take Laquon Treadwell! You have a top ten defense in a season where Terrell Suggs only played one game and with the current CB's. You just signed Leslie as a coach to help the team create turnovers. Offensively everyone complains that Flacco has no WR's outside of Steve Smith. Last year 1st round WR didn't play and can go missing off minor injuries as we saw this season. The bigger need obviously is on offense. WR in Baltimore didn't play up to standard and never have for the entire FRANCHISE. Our defense has had bad year(s). Their is a major difference so yes go with the WR.

The Lions coaching was hired away from us, so it stands to reason he'd talk them up since its the same guys he's been working with his whole career and that actually compliments his old team.

He didnt ask to get traded, and he's not gonna go to the new squad and dog em, that doesnt make any sense. relax, stop taking junk personal.

Who exactly has coached him his whole career? Austin or Caldwell? Or am I missing somebody that really coached him all his career and was with us when he was drafted? Sure he didn't ask to be traded but also made it near impossible to hold on to him given his salary and his lack of desire to sign an extension without losing money here in Baltimore. Since you are the man with abundant calm and fortitude, I would really frame my argument with a little more sense and tact. Also, nobody expects him to dog his new team. All I'm saying is do so with a little more tact. So chill out.

Re: Ngata - I wouldn't say Ngata "wants" to stay in Detroit (who the hell does?). He's 32 and a FA coming off a subpar season and is saying the right things to stay in Detroits good graces. I could see him coming back to Bmore if the Lions don;t resign him. He knows the D. We could use him and he won't be as expensive.

I can't be mad at Ngata for his comments, he's got a year or two to make as much money as he can before he hits the real world.

I'm more concerned with urschel not focusing on his craft, I understand education is important but he has all the time int the world for a PhD after his career ends. Right now with his rookie contract he is being paid many times more than a full time college professor with a PhD. This reminds me of when Matt Elam spent his first offseason selling shoes at footlocker and came in ill prepared for his terrible sophomore season.

Re: drafting Treadwell, the kid's a stud. What happen in the first 6 picks is anyone's guess and there are other receivers down the line that are very talent too like Sterling Shepard. Most mocks doen;t have a WR off the board at #6. I'm more for fortifying the defense, but guys like Bosa, Ramsey and even Hargreaves could all end up in the top 5. But if they opt for Treadwell at 6th I don't see how they go wrong.

ahhh this must be the part where you go REALLY far out of your way to pretend you didnt understand what i said so you can act like you have a point and arent just being an overly sensitive baby about Ngata enjoying his new team.

How can you be more tactful than not mentioning your old team at all? do tell? Becaue you're basically mad that Haloti said nice things about the Lions staff (since thats ALL he did) so your request is completely unreasonable considering he hasnt done anything without tact.
"I Love playing here. I love playing under coach caldwell."
Thats literally all he said. I dont even get where you construe the insult, so
what is it exactly that he's supposed to say in order to make YOU feel better?

speaking of guys who need to add some sense to their argument....

Re: Best Ravens team in history - the 2012 is the best for me. While the 2000 Ravens team WAS special and the Defense arguably one of the best in NFL history, the 2012 team won based on a sense of destiny. Lewis and Birk got to retire as SB champs. Boldin, Reed and Ngata final got SB rings. They limped into the playoffs with injuries. They fired their OC after week 10. There were a host of other storylines that seemed bad during the season and ended well. Yet they controlled their destiny all the way through. That was a storied season if there ever was one.
