[News] Joe Flacco Is AFC Championship Exception

37 posts in this topic

Kubiak's patience with the running game is what struck me while watching the AFC Championship game -- of course, that and the amazing D. I was thinking back over the season and remembering how Trestman just couldn't stick with it, and that put so much pressure on Joe to throw so many times. If you're going to throw 40 times in a game, and your O-line sucks, it's pretty much a recipe for disaster. Hope Harbaugh exerts some pressure on him to stick with it next season.

I basically agree with that. I understand why Kubiak was so conservative, but I don't think he came up with some formula to beat Belichick. Doing what they did only works if your defense is dominating. As far as play calling goes, I think Wade Phillips deserves more credit than Kubiak.

Phillips called a great game, but the Offensive Coordinator controls the pace of the game. If Kubiak had let Manning drop back and throw the ball 45 times, I promise you Manning has more turnovers, and that Denver Defense gasses out in the 2nd Half. This is more of a comparison of Kubiak's style of play to Trestman, where we have more stats, but don't protect our defense and let them rest. That's why we saw our defense break in so many games. If we had Kubiak this year, we are at worst 8-8, but it wouldn't have surprised me if we won 10 games. Think about our record with Flacco this year compared to last. And you can't deny that keeping Brady off the field is a good strategy (sticking with the run), or that attacking the middle of the field is a weakness for the Patriots big linebackers stuck in coverage when you spread out the Safety's.

Gary Kubiak has the recipe to beat Belichick, and that game would have been a blowout if he had a more capable QB than Manning. Other teams should take notes.. Run the ball, control clock (keep brady off the field), attack the middle of the field with physical WR's and TE's. So happy to see Brady fall short after so many chances to take that game into OT. I would like to personally thank Von Miller and all those rushers that got after his rear end.  Makes me sick how many times I watch a pats player beg for another penalty and then Hochuli rewards them with one.

no actually Wade Phillips has the recipe to beat Belichick. And its the same one Rex and Pees already use.
