Blizzard of 2016

30 posts in this topic

Since nearly 1 in 4 Americans are being impacted, we might as well have a thread for this. Post updates, snow totals, etc.

Had to push and dig to get a door open this morning, and that is under a good size porch roof. It's important to have a way out of the house, so keep that in mind. Soon I'll bundle up and go shovel out the generator. It's air-cooled and won't run if it can't get air.

With all the blowing, it's hard to determine how much snow we've had so far, but it is definitely well over a foot.

Had to slither my way out of the house too lol. Basically I already shoveled my porch, my walkway to our vehicles and around the vehicles while my wife got the backside. Now believe it or not she took off to the vet clinic to walk dogs since we're the only ones I guess who have 4x4's. She's from Wisconsin anyways so she loves it lol. Taking a small break right now the got to clear the front of my shed get the snoblower since I got a long driveway and not only that I gotta drive over and take care of my mom. Good thing I haven't had to use the generator. We still have electricity. Yeehaw!!

Love how the media hypes these things up now. They even give snowstorms names! This one is "Jonas" lol For the last few days i've been reading nothing but "potential record breaking snowstorm" ect.. It seems like every year there's a new "storm of the century"

Anyway, here in Delaware it's not really snowing anymore, hopefully that's the end of it.

20 inches where I am right now. Heavy stop not supposed to stop until 2pm and the light stuff won't stop until midnight tonight.

I hate this stuff now that I'm no longer a kid (I guess it's part of the reason I'm moving to Florida in 5 months). Got about 18 inches or so here in Glen Arm (Towson) and counting.

Struggled 2 hours ago with whether to shovel, snowblow, try the 4wheeler or make a bloody Mary. I'm inside, so do the math.

You made the right choice lol

On the way to dig out the generator (gotta be ready in case) I saw that the snow had drifted up almost to the air intake for my furnace. That's another tip: if you have a high-efficiency gas furnace or tankless water heater, make sure your intake stays clear. Bundle up and take a walk around your house looking for trouble.

I can get out the one door now, the other might not be usable til spring. :-(

I stayed on top of things as much as I could yesterday. One last shoveling at 11:30 before bed. ( a one car driveway with the wife's car. Plus the walkway and front steps. My truck in front of the house. Plus the walkway and driveway for the elderly next door neighbor )

Got up this morning 8:AM with an overwhelming amount.

I hate snow.

Nothing but ice and a layer of about 4 inches of snow here in NC. Given the area, my daughter will probably be out of school until Weds. LOL.

I was visiting DC around 5 years ago and a 2 1/2 foot storm was bearing down on us. Everyone was saying, "I suppose you're going to head home early to beat the snow". My answer was, "heck no ... why would I want to deprive my kids of seeing something they may never have a chance to witness again"? We stayed with my wife's cousin for the weekend and our kids and their kids had the time of their lives. Heck, I did too, tubing down a huge hill they have in their community.

The problem with this one is the wind. Hard to go out and play when the wind chills are dangerous and the snow is drifting. No fun there.

Stay indoors and stay safe.

I bought a Hybrid generator that runs off propane and gasoline. I keep two extra propane tanks on hand along with the one on the grill and I do not have to worry about the fuel going bad or my generator's carb getting gummed up. It has both manual and battery start but I know the battery is bad. I do have my tractor battery on a battery tender if I need to pull it out and use it. It is good to have the peace of mind knowing that you have a generator back-up if power goes out for an extended period of time.

Northern Delaware here, and we got (are getting) pummeled. Just shoveled the sidewalk and my arms and back are burning. The driveway will have to wait. Stay safe.

Good planning. I have a natural gas standby on a transfer switch so it's all automatic BUT you have to keep them clear and serviced. Just had mine serviced on the 14th, thank goodness.

A big strong young man showed up at my door a while ago and offered to dig out the blocked door, clean the car, and shovel the driveway for $50. Deal. Glad I remembered to hit the ATM yesterday.

What a shame such an awful blizzard is hitting the NE.  Happy I left NY for sunny South Florida where the weather is BEAUTIFUL today.  70's sunny and a nice breeze.

Final count (assuming it's over now) is 28 inches where I am.  Sold a neighbor a TV for a really good deal a couple of weeks ago and he offered to come use his snow blower for free tomorrow.  It's nice knowing people lol

I remember when I met my wife, she had a nice car, but it had these deep scratches on the roof. She said her ex cleaned the snow off the roof of her car with a metal snow shovel. Being a car guy, it drove me bananas that someone could do something like that!

I saw so many people that went out on the road and got stuck because they were in a vehicle they had no business being on the road in a blizzard in. You really need a high wheel base vehicle with four wheel drive and tire chains to be safe. You may not need the chains if you are staying on the main roads but you better have weight in the back and take a good shovel with you.

26+ officially at BWI now and still coming down fast. Everything I had cleared earlier is buried again. :-(

I am just a few minutes from BWI, I really can't measure anything and feel accurate due to all the blowing and drifting.  My front and back yard is looking pretty dang wavy right now.

Either me or my wife have gone out there every 2-3 hours and there is usually a good three or four inches of new stuff each time.

I will go out one more time before bed and hopefully just one time tomorrow morning and then I will be done.  Hopefully.

Today was beautiful here in OKC! About 48 degrees and the first time I was willing to take the bike out in a couple of weeks. Me and a buddy took the dual sports out for a few hours of trail riding/exploring. Supposed to be 60 tomorrow. Looks like I'm taking the bike out again! :P

Being originally from New York, I love this stuff!  My sister lives in Jersey and she was snowed in  I was in Texas the past 3 days when it hit and my wife and I just flew into Ft. Walton, Beach FL today to visit our son (whose stationed at Elgin Air Force Base), daughter in law and grand baby.  We'll get back to VA on Friday and I look forward to running my fireplace and playing some Madden 16.

Very nice! I'm moving to Destin in June, just south of FT Walton.
