Flacco the team player. Takes 3 year extension, lowers cap hit.

487 posts in this topic

I know Flacco did the Ravens nation a huge favor by agreeing to an extension that pays him a bonus check of $40MM and an annual salary of 22.1MM. This got me thinking. Coming off a terrible season in which he played sub-par football and also had a double ACL/MCL tear of his knee, what made the Ravens make him one of the highest paid QBs again? Were we really that desperate in terms of the cap situation or do we really believe that Flacco is or can be the best QB in the league? Why not let him play at his 28.55 cap this year and see how he's recovered and how he responds to a bad year? I'm actually happy that his deal got done, but I personally don't think this deal was a favor to the Ravens by any stretch of imagination.

That also makes me wonder how much Brady's extension with the Pats was for? First of all I loathe Brady and the Pats, but I just began to wonder if Brady actually signed for much less than he may get from the Pats to keep them competitive? Is it a myth or fact that his last two extensions were much less than other QBs not at his level of play and accomplishment? If true, then I am changing my opinion of Brady.

Considering everyone else's contracts, (suggs, webb, jimmy, yanda)  do you see a off season where we will have some decent spending money?  Im just hoping we are out of cap hell soon

Why would you want that?  That would mean our draft classes haven't panned out causing us not to need to pay good players. Big cap space = bad team pretty much 100% of the time. Adding a few key free agents is good but spending for the first day FAs doesn't work.

So, a couple things here. In the presser, OZ stated that the reason this deal got done was because both Joe and Steve wanted it to happen. It had less to do with cap space, and Oz reinforced that they were prepared to go either route. The cap savings is great, it helps both sides, but it wasn't the end-all be-all for the contract.

As for Brady. Well, his wife is worth 3-4x as much as he is. He can afford to take these extensions every year or two and he's still getting GTD monies with the lower cap hits. He has also had a couple sizable contracts, and will be playing into his 40s. He's a poor example. Guys like Cutler, Wilson, Rodgers, etc are better examples of the market value.

So let me get this straight -SAM BRADFORD gets a 2yr deal w/$28mil guaranteed, so he's making $28+ this year, and earlier this week Heath Evans on NFLN (yeah, I know, world's biggest moron) was saying that now, BROCK OSWEILER will be looking for that kind of $, and people are STILL complaining about Flacco?

LMAO.

lol...sometimes ppl don't use their head to think.....

Sometimes ppl don't know what good they have until they lose it; some other ppl don't even know even after they lose it.....pity...

It's pretty likely Brady has a side deal with Kraft getting monies from elsewhere. Very Patriot like. The Saint Brady story and the money from his wife angle quite thick bs.

Ya know, I was gonna say it. I didn't though. He has a couple holding companies I believe, so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Ozzie and John were very effusive during the press conference. The deal was done amicably and quickly. That, plus the figures / structure of the deal make it pretty obvious how the franchise feels about Joe Flacco.

"On his shoulders stand the success of the organization over the last eight years" - Ozzie

Pretty straightforward. So that's where the Ravens stand.

So if his contract with the extension included is 6 years 125 mill overall (20.8 per year), can someone please explain how Flacco is the highest paid player in the NFL when Rodgers is making 22 per year and Russ makes 21+?

Also liked how he sort of basically called out the public for not really understanding the business.

He basically said "look, there's two kinds of teams... teams with a franchise QB and teams without. We have one, and he costs a lot, because all franchise QBs cost a lot. Deal with it".

I hear ya about the market determining how much QBs make nowadays, but here's the thing about Rodgers this past season: they basically limped into the playoffs. Their offense was mediocre at best with the absence of Jordy Nelson. Cobb is surely not a #1. Losing to the Bears and Lions at home? I don't get that. I understand they're divisional rivals, but the Pack tend to have a lot of success against their divisional rivals at home.

As for Joe, I disagree about the defense. That 2012 defense was bad. Surely they played better during the playoffs, but Flacco was on a tear. Let us also not forget that the defense almost blew a 28-6 lead thanks, in large part, to the power outage. 11TDs with no INTS? Sheesh. They're definitely not scrubs, but Boldin, Torrey, Jacoby, Pitta, weren't considered superstars either. Collectively, they were a really decent corps and we know the rest of the story. Flacco doesn't need top 10 WRs + TEs to produce. Just, as you said, provide him with decent talent.

Remember, Boldin and the receivers played out this world during that run!! Joe threw up a lot of go get it boys throws at that playoff run. And Boldin Pitta and company were taking it from the defense and played like top10. Looks like ravens can not pay KO whom I believe firmly will be a pro bowl left tackle. With left tackle being a problem and if no real weapons are found for Joe Cool to throw to then Joe and the offense  could end up looking ugly. If that happens Joe Cool and the ravens front office will be thrashed and shredded 7 ways from Sunday by fans, media, analysts, commentators, mocked by rival fans and insulted in ways nobody can imagine. Because the ravens defense is not carrying the offense for at least a season or so. The fo committed to Joe Cool and really did not get much cap relief. KO needs to be retained for sure and front office needs to get Joe Cool some legit weapons. I would not be surprised if ravens trade back into round one for a receiver like Doctson. He actually is a better and more sudden route runner than I initially thought. If Ravens keep KO and what is in my opinion the best OLine in the NFL intact and ravens add a couple legit playmakers the offense could be top3 or even nfls best while Joe Cool puts up big numbers. And paying Joe will look genius. If Perriman and Campanaro play and ravens draft somebody like Doctson and sign a talented receiver in need of a good QB like Quick to throw in with Maxx and Gilmore the offense would be awesome. Maxx is working hard this offseason  and should be a top6 TE. With this contract I do not see how surrounding Joe with playmakers is not priority. Cuz if Joe plays subpar and results in a losing season the front office knows it will shredded.

I think your perception and the Ravens' FO perception of Joe's performance must differ greatly.

Well, there's not much of a scenario where the offense is worse than it was last season, given the players involved.

So if they weren't mocked and shredded by the media and fans (probably the least relevant people to be mocked by) then, I don't suspect they will be this season either.

If we get a LT one way or another, the offense based on personnel alone is probably better without even adding anybody (which we will).

The offense, even without a LT, isn't the unit I'm worried about right now. Its still the better unit on the team. We need health and several quality defensive players as well. The good news is the draft and FA haven't begun yet.

Ozzie was wrong!!lol there are 3 kinds of teams. Teams without a franchise QB, teams with a franchise QB and teams with a franchise QB that eats a huge chunk of the salary wall. And that is just it, the offense needs to score points to win. If the offense is just average the ravens will not contend for a championship. As of now the trend is pressure the QB. However the Broncos and Panthers as well to a degree beat up weak OLines. That is why I like KO at left tackle. He is far more athletic and technically better than as a rookie. He could handle speed but a left tackle with rare skills to not just block the edge rusher but punish the edge rusher. Ravens currently have an OLine that is nasty from KO to Jensen to Urschel to Wagner and course Yanda.

Yeah, the third segment you listed doesn't really exist though.

Franchise QBs not on rookie deals cost at least $15M a year. There really aren't any exceptions to that rule. After that, fans are just whining about "well this guy makes $1M a year more than that guy" and blah blah blah. All irrelevant.

Plenty of mediocre offenses win SBs... we did just that in 2012. Its the defense that needs the biggest improvement.

Obviously KO needs to be retained. I'm sure the FO wants to retain him as well. I don't think this is a debate. With the releases of both Daryl and Canty, I could imagine if they increased their offer to KO.

As far as playmakers are concerned, I think all of us are basically pounding the table for one to give to Joe whether if it's Doctson or someone else. I no longer have faith in Camps to stay healthy over a full season. If he could, I have no questions regarding his game. And we'll see if the hard work pays off for your TE.

Nice, looks like we have him locked up 3 more years at least, can get talks going on an extension in 2019 but could also differ to 2020 where I think we will get another deal ironed out.

The pass to Torrey smith at the end of the game may have been Ill advised but he threw for four TDs against a secondary with Revis and McCourtey. Flacco played good enough to win the game. Tom Brady took advantage of the fact that we were missing a few corners

He played a terrific first half. To say "Joe had NOTHING to do with it.." Is a stretch.

I think this is largely accurate. I never think of someone playing well enough to win if they've lost.

I have no idea why everyone is so giddy about Flacco. Flacco is an average QB that is cashing in on his team.  If you guys don't wake up soon we are going to be the washington Redskins from 18 years ago. SMH

The Flacco love is terrible.  2 good seasons in sevens years.  CMON MAN!  757 I really cant believe you live in the tidewater area approving this.  We ball in Virginia!

So would you rather have the former list of an old Vinny Testaverde, Eric Zeier, Tony Banks Trent Dilfer, Elvis Grbac, Anthony Wright, an old non mobile Kordell Stewart, Stony Case, Kyle Boller an old beat up Steve McNair, Troy Smith, top me when I get to a serviceable QB. I will take Joe all day we are not the top tier D  anymore and couldn't win 4 games with anyone on this list with the D in its current state. Also the Redskins of 18 years go won in March free agency every year over paying for washed up big names big difference.

Let me say what cats on the board are to scared to say.  Because of the moderators or perhaps homers.  I would be happy if joe average took an average contract.  At his number he is expendable.   There is no more to it. We can honestly do without Joe at 20 anything

Well, there is the ignore button.....

Dude your so Flacco gone no matter what he does or doesnt do on the field, you will make an excuse.  How can you truly be a Ravens fan and not care about the state of the Ravens.  Since his Superbowl run Flacco has had one good year and is getting paid like he is amongst the best in the league. But what do I know, time will tell, if I'm an aspiring player with potential I wouldn't wanna play on a team that is paying big dollars to an average QB.
