[News] Ravens Eyeing Pass Rushers, But Draft Options Limited At Pick No. 6

84 posts in this topic

Get a shut down cornerback.. .do not waste another 1st rd draftpick on a receiver

Certainly no guarantees you'll get a shut down corner at #6 either. Pretty good list of top drafted corners who have really struggled in this league recently.

YES! I'm interested in his combine #'s because if he has a good 20 second split and 3 cone drill, he'll be a top 10 lock 100%... Clemson plays a complex defense that required him to do a lot of reading and reacting. I'm hoping thats the reason he doesn't always explode off the line.  Just knowing the players we like, (and as corny as this may sound) he plays like a raven.  Read Dabo's comments about him and then fit that into the mantra that Marchibroda instilled (talked about in a previous article).  the dude loves football, loves watching film and working out.  That just makes me think he'll be a star in the league even more.  He is a leader, a hard worker, and a smart player.  Also he is pretty damn talented as well, his spin move is near perfected and reading other scouting reports it sounds like he really has only begun to tap into his pass rush potential.  If ramsey isn't there I want Lawson

Pretty lengthy list of players who dominate the combine and those drills in particular who end up being not so great football players.

That's kind of the idea here... to get a great football player.

Well, in this case, Lawson is a phenomenal football player... Just wouldn't put him in the 3-4

I guess that's why GMs don't get paid to listen to Mel Kiper. Wasn't he the one that said Elam was a perfect fit? Shaq Lawson, Calhoun, Bosa can rush the passer very well. Who cares if they can't cover. The league is not design to favor guys to cover. The rules make it too hard. Suggs, Dumervil, Upshaw, JJ for Ravens- D Ware, Miller on broncos are not great cover guys. You adjust your defense to talent as it presents itself.Panthers, Bengals, Cards, Seahawks are among the top defenses and run the 4-3. I think the Ravens should consider adjusting that if the available talent suits that scheme.

We do give some 4-3 looks in our hybrid system.  But switching to a totally different defensive philosophy is really easier said than done.  Out of the top five defenses during the regular season only one uses a 4-3 scheme (Seattle) and the cards run a 3-4.

Nice to know the draft is the "mostly likely place" to find those players, Garrett. Or that a pass rusher might not be "worth worthy" of the #6 pick. Got it.

Your right. Cards also use a S at ILB. At #6 overall hopefully Ravens add enough team speed on both sides of the ball.

If we get a pass rusher at no. 6 I will be so mad. If you draft a pass rusher he is not going to start over Suggs or Dumervil. That would be crazy! If defense get a CB but preferably Laquon Treadwell. He is the no.1 receiver we needed for years!!! Cowboys stole Dez from us lets get it right this draft. Permian is Torrey Smith's replacement and nothing more in my eyes. He is a burner not the guy for crucial 3rd down situations. Get Treadwell to complete your offense in case Steve Smith gets hurt. I would not bank on Permian carrying the offense. Our current defense improved greatly later in the season. Besides we have had more success drafting defensive playmakers than offensive playmakers, so get the sure thing now at WR. I have full faith Newsome could draft a CB or OLB later in the draft. The debate drafting this year for the Ravens is... Flacco has no WR to throw to versus your defense not making int's. Clearly the need is bigger on offense. As for the other WR's playing well towards the end that was with Mallett and not Flacco. Flacco needs a big body guy! At the very least this eliminates the Ravens going into free agency getting veteran receivers all the time. We should have home grown talent on offense as well as on defense.

That pass rusher wouldn't have to start over either of them in 2016, though Suggs play making ability is in serious question at this point.

Neither of the two guys you listed will be on the team in 2-3 years, and waiting until then to address the position is extremely risky. There's also the notion of never having too many rushers, as we see injuries occur.

Doesn't mean they will take a pass rusher at 6, but it's certainly realistic to think they might. We're not drafting a player just for their 2016 impact...

Salary cap restrictions are going to keep us from competing in 2016, you paid Flacco all this money find a way like you did for him, you keep paying Pitta who hasn't played for two years, find a way to pay these people, but to me it seems like you're more interested in being friends with people instead of running a business and if that's the case, we'll be 5-11 once again for the season coming up!!!

Salary cap isn't the problem...we've got the same issues there that a lot of contending teams do.

Whiffing on recent high draft picks is the bigger issue.

I feel like we don't need to look at the Defense that much this coming off season, I felt that we did a fairly good job this past season on Defense except for the Chiefs,Raiders,Seahawks and the Browns, what we really need is a QB that's not afraid to dance around outside of the pockets rather than stay stationary and what I have a hard time understanding last season is how could we hire a OC from a losing team like Chicago, funny but we always fear Flacco getting hurt but It was our own men who fell on Flacco's leg injuring him, If Flacco would've been dancing more, the chances are he wouldn't have gotten hurt, the Ravens need to get Flacco some dancing lessons and take a look at the O-Lines to give Flacco another second or so to find someone to throw to or perhaps take off and run the ball hisself

I watched the Az v GB game, the NE v KC game.... The Seattle v Carolina game and I am watching the Den v Pit game.., and one thing that stands out is the aggressiveness and down hill play of every defense. The defenses left are physical, fast and play down hill.... I cannot remember the last time I said that about our Defense! We look so soft compared to all of these defenses. SMH!!!!!!!!! DEFENSE WINs CHAMPIONSHIPS.... get rid of Pees!

What IS there a guarantee for in the draft?

Z. Smith is 6'4 275 and can play outside or inside. He'll get better. Can't wait to see how these large pass rushers move at the combine. Whether S, pass rusher, or CB we will get better defensively where we are picking in the draft in the first 3 rounds

absolutely no way he makes it to the fourth..hes a second rounder at the very least. I believe Allen is going back to school.

and I don't know why so many ppl think Ramsey won't make it to us, it's actually pretty likely..the jaguars are the only team I see that we may need to worry about. But even if he does get taken it could be a blessing in disguise bc he is a risky pick.

I think our best pass rushing option is yannick in the second or moving back into the first and grabbingfFloyd.

Even at the cost of trading back into the 1st... I'd love to see us do that and grab Floyd

The fifth year option would be an added bonus

there is no way you put a guy with Z smiths measurables in the middle.  He is a prototypical OLB/DE hybrid.  Inside guys in the 34 usually have less length and weigh in the 240 to 250 range.  I mean he could come up the middle on a twist or another stunt but there is no way you play the guy at ILB.  You have to let a guy like that use his size and length on the edge against the OTs.

Strangely, I think it had more to do with the huge amount of injuries 2 years running (except this year being key players)

This same Ravens team healthy won't be 5-11 but interested in your thoughts... are you insinuating that we should cut Flacco or something?

I am referring to interior line much as McPhee did. Ravens would have him go up against guards at times or stunt inside when they also had Suggs and at the time Kruger on the field. McPhee was able to disrupt the passing lane and Z Smith at 6'4 could do the same thing.

I think he means inside on the line during passing downs much like how we used McPhee. Also 5.5 sacks is a great start for a rookie pass rusher, thats more sacks than Bud Dupree.

I see your point since Ravens are 8th defense and 14th on offense which is not bad for a team with injuries. The big problem imo were the turnovers by offense and lack of turnovers created by defense. Part of that is throwing the ball over 40 times a game. I just get the feeling that without upgrades they will not be able to beat Bengals, Steelers, Patriots and the NFC elite teams.

"Kiper said a logical pass-rushing option for the Ravens would have been Notre Dame’s Jaylon Smith"

Jaylon Smith was never a pass-rushing prospect. No clue what the hell he is even talking about here. He is likely going to be a MLB or WILL in the NFL.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ogbah blows up the combine and puts himself into our draft range. Floyd would be a bad pick that high--he's a Dumervil-style designated pass rusher who cannot stop the run.

No doubt turnovers (especially not getting any) was huge but once we have speed on the outside opposing teams will be forced to keep a safety up which will help the run game as well as the underneath routes. Having another year for the developing guys and the added players in the draft should help the team all over. Hopefully Suggs regains his form and some added pass rushers should help on the defensive side. Times like this make you really miss Ed Reed huh (cause our secondary can't catch a cold)

Let's relax. Bosa will run a really poor 40 at the combine and he will slide right into Ozzie's pocket.

That would be awesome (unlikely but awesome)

The only difference between the ravens drafting Treadwell compared to all their previous draft bust, was that none of them were rated the best at their position. Treadwell has been compared to dez Bryant and alshon Jeffrey, get this guy. Treadwell is literally the best wr in the draft. There are plenty of good pass rushers and cb in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. We gave a problem at wr, why not nip it n the bud now?
