Ed Reed Hired as Asst. Coach in Buffalo (merged)

96 posts in this topic

He actually said he wanted to coach high school football.

That would have been enough of a signal to me.

Hopefully we'll be able to bring him in as a secondary coach, perhaps promote to DC when Pees retires in 4-5 years :(

UGHHHHH, we may not have a vacant DB coach position so I don't know why I'm mad but I always envisioned Ed and Ray one day coaching with our organization. It could still happen, coaches change teams all the time but seeing Ed get his start in coaching NOT with the Ravens makes me incredibly salty.

Quick!! Ravens please hire Ray Lewis as Linebacker coach. The players will listen to him.

I don't think Ray is looking to get into coaching right now, he's got a great gig with ESPN... hopefully somewhere down the line Ray will have that yearning to get directly involved in the game again and we'll have a spot for him.

Wow......this has been mentioned numerous times on these boards about bringing Ed Reed in as a coach. Well, I guess we missed the boat as Rex scooped him up. Im happy for Reed and believe he will make a great coach but am a little upset that we didnt jump on this first. I mean with our DB faulters this year and to have his leadership back in the Castle.....how was this not an option for us. Oh well maybe one day.

I don't understand why people seem to assume every great player will be a great coach... but what ever.

Ed Reed has a chance I reckon. He became pretty good coach while still playing.

nobody assumed he'd be great but we would've loved to find out for ourselves especially when there is a weakness there.

Maybe because he had such an impact on guys like Webb when they came into the league?

Freaking Rex... Why couldn't the bills fired him after missing the playoffs? Pretty weak

I know but you cant blame him. Smart move.

Wow. I just had a rollercoaster of thoughts:

1. Why didn't we do this?

2. Why would Ed not want to come back to Baltimore?

3. Why didn't Ed Reed go to the Colts to reunite with Pagano?

4. Is there something we don't know?

Just my sequential thoughts.

It sucks because Reed is my favorite defensive back player ever and neck and neck with Lewis as favorite player ever. That said, I find this interesting since he didn't join the Colts (Pagano) but Ryan. That's very peculiar to me.

No, can't blame him, but makes me dislike him. It just really sucks knowing Ed will be coaching on another teams sideline.

Earlier today many sources reported Ed Reed joining Rex Ryan in Buffalo to serve as assistant DB coach for the Bills.  Rex also added his brother Rob to the defensive coaching staff.  On the surface these appear to be significant if not huge moves.  On the positive end of a prediction spectrum these moves could be key to creating a defensive juggernaut in the AFC East.

My concern is that it's already been reported that Rex has one year to right the ship with the Bills or he's history.  Will that be enough time?  If things don't turn out as intended what becomes of Ed Reed?  Also, provide your take on what you think Rex saw in Ed to consider bringing him on as an assistant DB coach?  Have the Ravens evaluated Ed for a potential coaching position?  If so, was an offer ever made?

Anyway, predictions!  Insight!  Let the fun begin!!

After thinking on this some, I wouldn't judge him too harshly. It hurts to see him coach another team but I can understand it. Maybe it's about respect or even opportunity? Maybe he thinks he can learn more in terms of being a coach in Buffalo more than Baltimore? It's not like he was learning how to be a coach while he was a player. He coached guys up but there's more to coaching than that. Ryan knows how to pressure the QB.

Then again maybe it's all about respect and Buffalo offered him the most money or biggest role.

Agreed. It's shocking he didn't go with his former Canes DC, but Rex. I guess he really is a players coach. Ed was definatly my favorite player of all time. I watch him all through college, was ecstatic when we drafted him, and absolutely loved watching him here. Now he's in Buffalo...

Pokes a little bit of my nerves for him to start his coaching career @ some other team.

But he is basically going to be learning as a new coach.

Let him fine tune his skills.   Then he can come to us!

Great for Ed, and Bills, bummed that our staff didnt see the forsight in bringing him in here. This was and has been a major deficiency for us the last 3 years. Ed could have helped us bigtime

This sucks, I really don't like it at all. If we play the long-term game I see one silver lining; Ed Reed is mentored under Rex and comes back here as DC in 3-5 years. Otherwise, just another tough break for the fans ...

Not really. You think the Steelers are upset over Rod Woodson being the Raiders DB coach? Also for as great of a player Reed was, doesn't mean it would translate to coaching. Whether it was us or Buffalo in this case, it was a gamble not knowing what they are getting. I'm happy for Ed, I wish he was coaching here but that's it.

Agree, don't see many great players becoming great coaches.  This is especially true for QB's for one reason or the other.

I'd rather Ed Reed take his lumps with another organization and when and if the time is right, the Ravens will pounce.
