Draft Value Explanation?

6 posts in this topic

Now that the Ravens are in uncharted waters, our favorite team is picking in the top 10 for the first time since drafting Suggs. Now as a fan I have a question for you guys, what exactly does draft value mean to you guys?

What I mean is, if we were picking at #26 and we drafted Laquan Treadwell, we'd be ecstatic right? But if we picked him at 6 I know a lot of you guys would be salty lol. If he becomes a perennial pro bowler does it make a difference? I'm curious to be educated here, are top 10 picks for hall of famers, and late first rounders supposed to be for the pro bowlers? 2nd round for long time starters? I'm trying to see it from the general perspective.

My perspective of true draft value is drafting someone that won't last long after you're pick, we could pick Treadwell at 6 but would it be great value? Because IMO if we don't pick him he could very well fall to 10-12, whereas someone like Bosa could fall to us but you know he won't make it past 7 or 8 if we passed on him. As far as what to expect if you draft someone in the top ten, you usually draft them thinking they have pro bowl talent anything past top 20 to the second round you hope for a starter.

The pick is worth as much as the player. It's that simple. Generally when you get a top pick, it's a degree of safety. You get your pick of the cream of the crop. Obviously you can miss, but all else equal top picks have a greater chance of becoming those impact players than later picks (assuming you aren't Al Davis.)

At 26, Treadwell is greater value because in theory he should be a better prospect than anyone available and by a good margin. At 6 tho, we expect better players to be available, so in theory Treadwell would be inoptimal because we could have had a better player.

Likewise, the top pick in the 2013 draft may be worth less than the 17th pick in the 2014 draft.

At a pick as high as # 6 I see the draft value needs to be a difference maker, a Blue Chip.

2nd round better be a quality starter

3rd round a starter to top tier role player

4th - 7th role players with the ability to be more.
