Smokey's Annual Raven's Mock

29 posts in this topic

I make atleast 1 of these every offseason, and this one wont be any different! I, of course, am not a professional but a Ravens fan since it's inception. We all love these Ravens equally, and can dissagree withought there being any hard feelings :)

Round 1: A'shawn Robinson, Interior Lineman, Alabama, 6'4 320 lbs

Alabama+v+Arkansas+RW2VV-_7XBel.jpg

BPA my friend, Robinson was the vocal leader for that Bama defense, we can certainly use one of those. He's extremely versatile and can play anywhere across the defensive line. He can play the 5 technique in our base formation, slide to the 3 in the nickel and even play the 0 if we get caught in a no huddle situation. Canty might not be back next year, this guy would be an upgrade and would be the first step to playing Raven football again.

Round 2: Jonothan Allen, Edge Rusher, Alabama, 6'3 265 lbs

West+Virginia+v+Alabama+XyeWjat_Flol.jpg

This might be my least popular pick, lose one Bama Backer (Upshaw) and replace him with another, and double dip in Alabama. Well yes, when a team consistently has one of the nastiest front 7's in the league it would be smart to leach some of that talent. Alabama teaches their guys fundamentals, and Jonathan will come here from day one knowing assignment football. He's the guy to learn behind Suggs.

Round 3: Josh Doctson, WR, TCU, 6'4 190 lbs

460057682-wide-receiver-josh-doctson-of-

Bobby Engram is showing that he can develop the nuances in a WRs game to help them become better route runners. Doctson won't be able to out-athlete everyone at the next level, but selling his routes a little bit more, and threatning what defenders are trying to protect will take this kid to the next level. I truely believe Doctson can take the league by storm if he lands in the right place. And i think this is one of those places. Joe Flacco likes to throw "trust passes" and with Doctson, Smitty, Kamar, Crocket, and Maxx he will always have somewhere to go when teams continue to blitz on 3rd down.

Round 4: Le'Raven Clark, Offensive Tackle, Texas Tech, 6'6 313 lbs

LeRaven-Clark-630x319.jpeg

Here comes the pick to make Juan Castillo happy. Firstly the name shows that he was meant to come to Baltimore, but on top of that the young man has very good side to side movement. He has adequate strength to move people and will probably project to be a guard or right tackle in the nfl. That's perfect for the future, we don't know if we can resign Rick Wagner down the road, and Marshal Yanda can't play forever. We can develop a player to rotate our line for either spot.

Notes:

* The first 2 picks are on defense because our offense has shown that they can do more with less better than our defense can.

* I predict our defensive line to be: Jernigan - Williams - Robinson (that would be SO nasty)

* Our linebacker core would be: Suggs - Mosley - Smith - Doom/Allen (slightly better on paper than last year, maybe equal with age considered)

* I have Doctson falling because of his struggles to separate, and most likely not having great combine numbers.

Just don't see it...we go bpa based on need..and in round 1 interior lineman isn't it.

If we base it off of need than its not bpa. It's drafting for needs

everybody knows we draft bpa based on need. If we had the first pick last year would we have taken Winston? The only way we would take a guy at a position that we didn't need was if the player was a blue chip prospect and an immediate game changer -And Robinson doesn't really fit that bill. The problem I have with picking Robinson is that it doesn't fill a need. You can talk up about BPA but we always take need into account. If we have someone slightly ranked another prospect and he fills the need, than that said person will be the pick and not the BPA. We need to fill in our needs via the draft because I don't expect us to make any big moves in FA. We have too many needs to here to spend a high pick on a 5-tech.

He would have to own the combine to be considered there. If he ran a 4.8 or better and repped 40 times and jumped nearly 10' at 6'4 325lbs then he could go top6. I agree on the Doctson freefall. Edge rushers in this draft are noting to write home over.

I like Robinson... He's a good prospect and has a high ceiling imo.

I hate him here. We have four really talented dlinemen. Carl Davis, Jernigan, Williams, and Lawerence Guy. Two of them are high level players. One is a critical role player. The third was a rookie who flashed this year. He had his lows, but he's a rookie.

Dlinemen is our strongest position.

I cannot say the same for Jonathan Allen. I love him as a prospect and think he would fit here very well.

I agree with our d line being deep but I wouldn't call it great. We are good at utilizing role players. Lawrence Guy and CA Davis do t start on most teams with their current skills. I see Robinson instantly being our best lineman next to Williams

I think when doing a mock you should always put who think went ahead of our pick to help put things in context...

I really like Jonathan Allen. He's currently used as a 3-4 DL but I really see a guy who can drop some weight and transition to OLB. He's also an ideal height imo for an OLB. He has great hand work. I wouldn't be surprised if he falls on draft day because tweeners like him have a tendency to drop.

I think he'll end up a third round pick who should've been a first.

I think we'll draft off need in the first two rounds. Robinson may be BPA but taking him top 6 means he must not only start but play regularly. We've also shown a penchant at developing late round DL. With investments in Jernigan, Davis, Urban, Guy (he's only got a year left, though), Williams I don't know if we'll make another investment into the DL. It does make some sense in that Robinson means we could have him as insurance if we can't retain Williams, but I just don't know here.

Btw, I'm not sure where you got Allen's measurements but the Alabama website lists him as 283.

I think Ozzie's Bama connection often is miscategorized. Ozzie has a thing for drafting champions. Just take a look back, even recently with Brooks and Jernigan coming from Florida State. It's really hard to instill that winning culture into people, and it's much easier if they've already tasted that sucess and victory

With that being said I hope that Clemson wins so we take a hard look at guys like Jayron Kearse or Mackenzie Alexander.

I don't see this mock happening @ all.

the drafts never go as expected, I don't remeber seeing one mock with us grabbing Breshad on this site. Not saying that i nailed it, because I know I didn't but it's extremely unpredictable.

If Doctson makes it past the first half of round 2 I would be shocked

there's always someone who free falls every year. For recievers it's the slow possession recievers pretty consistently. Keenan Allen, Jalen strong, I predict the same for Doctson and dural.

Allen fell due to his knee injury. Strong was never a first round pick tbh. A better comparison is probably Jeffery and Boldin.

Welp, Bama won the championship so we have a strong chance at seeing someone get taken

came here to say this.. I'm really worried Ozzie will take Robinson. However I wouldn't mind seeing Howard, that dude is amazing, I think he could play wr in the NFL

does seem like an Ozzie pick- but with the way things have been going I almost think Eric and Steve wouldn't allow it.

But who knows- maybe Ozzie has a preminition of Robinson becoming a future ring of honor inductee..maybe we shouldn't question it lol. id probably be severly let down at first- but hopefully it woukd end up being well worth it. Robinson, Williams and jernigan is pretty enticing. Then we would also have good depth. I guess if all of our main targets are gone we have to consider this as an option.

I'll take buckner instead, give us something we dont have already have in a superior talent. A DE instead of another DT.
