[News] Ravens Have Options At Left Tackle

49 posts in this topic

It's unfortunate they contracted an average starting LT at the market rate for a superior LT. In retrospect had they put KO there when the need opened they could have saved themselves cap space.

Is there anyway the ravens could trade Monroe to eliminate his cap space, Is this possible.

I don't understand how the cap space works.

Heres an option: keep Monroe to not play for us very often and let someone else take K.O., another one of our great products. NOT! Gotta keep K.O.!

Il try to make things as simple as possible just bare with me.

http://overthecap.com/player/eugene-monroe/927

1- Eugine monroe has 3 years left on his contract.

2- His salary for those years are 8.7mil(2016) 8.95 (2017) and 8.95 (2018)

3- Of those 3 years, 2.2 mil is guaranteed every year as a signing bonus totaling 6.6mil. That is money that the Ravens have to pay him regardless and must swallow the cap hit regardless if he's on the roster or not.

4- If the Ravens decide to cut or trade him before this upcoming June 1, the Ravens must swallow 6.6 million (dead cap) in 2016 saving 2.1mil in cap space (2016) that can be spent elsewhere.

5- if the Ravens decide to cut or trade him after June 1, then 2.2 counts as dead cap in 2016 freeing up 6.5mil in 2016 and the remainder (4.4mil) gets moved to dead cap against 2017.

Other viable options would be to let 2016 play out and revisit this issue same time next year. At that time, monroe would be owed 4.4 mil guaranteed out of his remaining 18mil in salaries. If he continues to miss time then he'd be forced to take a huge paycut or be traded for peanuts while freeing up a ton of cap space to sign whoever. If he plays well then the Ravens could extend and restructure freeing up cap space and keeping monroe at the same time. The Ravens don't have much leverage at this point but in one year they would have all the leverage.

Hope I cleared up a few things

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/bs-sp-preston-ravens-column-1124-20151123-column.htmlGreat article about what this team should look for in the first round this year!!

Great post! Thank you.

Can't help but to think how happy I'd be if Ozzie snatches a stud with our 6th overall pick and then moves from the 38th pick to the late 20s and snatches another day one starter stud! I don't care if Ozzie picks punters the rest of the way coz I'd be too busy celebrating lol

Well, sure, they have "options" at LT, but how many of them are good options? Only Osemele, period. Monroe stinks and so does Hurst. If they want to get Joe killed, then yeah, they have "options". Joe is pretty much immobile. He is a sitting duck with Monroe and Hurst. Other teams make it a priority to protect their franchise investment. The Patriots don't give a crap who the wide receivers are. They put their bucks into the offensive line to protect Brady. Like em or not, it makes sense and it works.

Franchise tag KO, everyone support this for the love of our team. At least a tag would allow us to see who we can draft and whether or not Monroe is the answer to our long-term LT problem, or if KO is better suited. We have a pretty mean line and I'd hate to take the teeth out of it!

teams are not going to want to trade for monroe and take on his contract with his recent injury issues. the best we can hope for is that he gets to 100% with his health and he kicks butt next season and k.o. is right beside him at guard.

Thanks for the info Hal.  I'll be honest and say that if a solid LT option is available (whether it's KO or our first round draft pick), 6.6m in dead money to let Monroe walk feels perfectly acceptable to me.  Lets face it the guys not playing nickle, no.3-WR or TE here, LT is a full time job and needs someone who is on the park every game.

Either that or renegotiate his contract downwards with the same guarenteed money and re-evaluate after one year, I can't imagine he is too valuable in free-agency right now.

How can the Ravens front office justify keeping Monroe-- someone else' player on our team with a big money contract while we let our homegrown talent (that is actually better than Monroe by the way) walk away to star on some other team? It simply makes no sense. Eugene Monroe, thanks for your service, Mr. Hired Gun, we wish you the best in your future endeavors.

I don't think KO is going to be back in Baltimore next year and that is just the way it is. Look at Kruger he went to the Browns... That just shows us that money will be the biggest factor in this. I also don't think the Ravens can trust Monroe to protect Joe for an entire season and definitely not for the next three years. No one is going to take Monroe in a trade because of his health so I think the Ravens will draft an OT in the first round and let him sit behind Monroe for a season and then step into the starting role.

If monroe takes a paycut allowing the Ravens to pickup a nickle or help resign KO he'd be the man! But I doubt he does that.

It's really one of those damned if you do and damned if you don't situations with Monroe. I'm glad I don't have to make a decision like this.

Oh and your absolutely right. If we pick up the next Ogden like LT in the first and solve this problem for the next 5 years id gladly swallow that 6.6mil.

My bigger concern is trying to retain KO who I think played at a pro bowl level and is still young.

Would love to see us keep KO but the FO and Linta must agree to a team friendly Flacco deal sooner than later for it to happen IMO

I know that it's the least likely scenario to happen, because of the cap, but I most like the idea of having KO as our LT. I don't trust Monroe to stay on the field so that is my least favorite option, even though I think it's the most likely scenario, again because of the finances. And if we do, indeed, lose KO, which is likely, I hope that we get somebody better than Hurst as a backup for Monroe. Hurst just didn't do anything to make me feel warm and fuzzy. We're talking about Joe's blindside. We can't lose sight of that. Big time important as we, finally, learned this past season.

Best outcome would be if we can manage to draft Ronnie Stanley. Monroe can't stay healthy. There's more dead money in keeping him than there is in cutting him. And a rookie contract is cheaper than re-signing KO will be. Not to mention Stanley probably will emerge as a better quality LT than both of those guys.
