[News] Secondary 'Trending Up,' No Big Moves Coming

21 posts in this topic

I believe the secondary benefitted from the Ravens offense's new found ability to convert on third down. By generating long drives it drastically reduced the amount of time that the opponent's offense was on the field. It does make a difference whether their offense has 8 drives a game as opposed to having 12 drives a game. Not to mention that it allowed our secondary and pass rush to rest improving the stats as well. I agree Shareece Wright has improved and was a great pickup. Also, lets not forget Will Davis was playing some really good corner before going down as well. I think we need to get a corner in the draft, I just don't know if we need to use a #1 pick on one. I like Ramsey, but what else do we need that may be out there at that time.

The Cardinals have been using 3 Safety's for awhile now. They even dropped Deone Bucannon down to LB because they understand that the league has evolved into a pass happy league. We need to find Hybrid LB's that can run and cover. Mosley should be asked to play zone or blitz more often than he is put into man coverage cause TE's and RB's picked on him in almost every game this year. Daryl Smith has had one heck of a career, but he will be 34 this year and we could use more speed at the position.

Trending up? I'm sorry but the coaches and the players stunk it up in the secondary and we better be adding pieces come this May. Ozzie been drunk off that purple kool-aid.

Webb was a hybrid safety/CB and we need to stop dropping Upshaw into coverage. He is not that type of LB. I agree with the hybrid lb/CB. We did play better but we were at home and played teams that were not as good. I hope we go defense and oline in the draft. We need to get that Baltimore bully style of defense that put fear in opposing teams. Let's get those kind of guys again. We have a few old and young ones like that but we need a lot more especially in the back of the field

I noticed a significant improvement in the defense the 2nd half of the season. However, I still can't wrap my head around the ranking of 2nd best overall defense for the latter half. I understand the stats contributing to this ranking but I just don't feel confident that the Ravens defense is anywhere near the dominant force we need it to be.

I agree. That whole press conference was a big example of spin. The play improved because the quality of QBs decreased.  Moving Webb to safety is not an answer.

Trending Up ???? That must be meant as a joke! Is this blog going to spend the entire off season trying to spin the results of 2015 or be straight and address the real issues this team has? (If you keep up with the spin, well that is not journalism thats sales) This secondary is at best poor and has been for several years now. The uptick over the last half of 2015 was weaker comp, look at the Seattle Game and show me an uptick!

sounds like the Ravens for the most part are standing pat. They have to improve the offseason program so they can cut down on the injuries next season.

Some make the argument that competition was not as good in the second half.....not sure that argument floats.

Steelers, Bengals, Jacksonville? Some decent QB's in that group...and Keenum is not a bum.....

Just sayin....

I kind of like it now that we don't sink money into high priced players much. Ask ole Danny Boy Synder how thats worked out . He's just sifting the playoffs and doles out money with mixed or no results. If we trend like 49ners/steelers/Pats/bengals and primarily build through the draft we'd be doing our future a great  service. Dead money can't win. A one big payday contract for an elite player would be nice sometimes. I do trust Ozzies judgement on the initial contracts. It's the 2nd extension that worry me. And don't know that its Ozzie. Cass and company please look at the bigger picture going forward. We can't take another Pitta debacle. We want him but how did you say?

I think that is a good idea. We could move Terrance Brooks into that role. He did a great job shadowing Wilson in the Seahawks game. I think he would excel in that position. The other option is to get a 3 down linebacker like Jaylon Smith from Norte Dame. He can cover TEs and backs out of the backfield.

Huge mistake not to completely revamp this secondary. Our cap situation is so tight every year that we've not been able to sign anyone significant and we've not taken hardly any S or CB in the draft other than Elam. Smith isn't nearly enough and has been disappointing. That said, the secondary sucks.......it cost us a playoff game in NE and this year was even worse than before. This is not a position you can nickel and dime anymore. No more signing guys off the garbage heap like Arrington, no more sending 6th and 7th round picks to the Dolphins for someone off the bottom of their bench. No more signing guys off other team's practice squads. Either we need to spend high draft picks on it, or pony up $12m a year for a good player. If we don't have money then we don't have much choice.
