Ted Monachino hired by Indy; new LB coach needed

99 posts in this topic

Thoiughs on Teryl Austin if he becomes available in Detroit.  The Lions just hired Bob Quinn as their new GM and it is possible that Caldwell could be fired along with his staff.

Would anyone have any interest in him as the LB in Baltimore.  Thoughts?

Lol Teryl Austin has been talked about as a potential head coach candidate. That dude will be a DC at least and won't even consider being a position coach. He's a hot name right now.

No way does he relegate himself to a position coach. He's a guy some teams are interested in as a HC. At the very least he'll be a DC.

I agree with this 100%, I always laugh how the NFL judges defenses based on total yards allowed. The last 8 games of the year the Ravens averaged giving up a little over 23 ppg, which for the year would be right around tied for 16th. Not horrible but certainly not near the Ravens defensive quality we expect. I don't care if the Ravens give up the most yards in the league, but if they're 16th in points thats not getting the job done.

It's actually right around 20. You're including defense touchdowns against

i know he has been talked about as a hc candidate last year but I haven't heard anything this year.   I haven't really been listening that closely either so who knows.

Something like 11

well that's pretty darn good, considering where we were after the first half.

Wait, I thought you were referring to the first half. Overall they'd finish right around 19 when adjusted for just their defensive touchdowns, but their second half performance would have put them right about 11. They shaved off over 5 PPG in the second half

I meant to say that's pretty darn good considering where they were at* (not after) the first half.  That being said the second half performance was ranked at 11 and if that were a full season it could have put us in the playoffs.  That and the games the Ravens had taken away from them from the refs.  Especially the Jacksonville game. The cardinals game isn't too far beind in my mind either.  smh

Well, to be fair to the second half, players just stepped up. Jimmy Smith finally got healthy (ranked as PFF's sixth ranked corner over the final eight weeks), Za'darius Smith got healthy, Pees dropped the linebackers into coverage more instead of blitzing them, and Webb got moved to safety, which really seemed to glue it all together. Just a lot of things went right.

btw, I know I've read that he was the 6th best corner and ZSmith got up  to speed in the defense as well.  Plus the adjustments in coverage.

In regards to the new grades with PFF since Premium statistics and signature stats aren't available is there a way under the current system to see he was 6th in the final half of the season.

Yes yards mean absolutely nothing in today's nfl.. Or any era of nfl really.... PPG is the only stat that matters

True! The ability to avoid, while creating (takeaway) turnovers directly affects this (OL,DL).

It was just in the Ryan Mink article from the end of the season.

BaltimoreBeatdown used to post the grades after every game, but they stopped after the Chiefs game, for some reason.

I don't think there is a way to see, honestly.

It's possible they lost access to the premium statistics.   I lost them a few weeks earlier and I know others lost it around the Chiefs game as well.  I remember reading it in the Mink article as well.

It really sucks that PFF has gone backwards, but according to an email conversation with PFF, they were losing money and are selling the service to more teams now.  It downgrades the service if the amateur sports fan can see the same thing they do.

That being said, he did say we would be improving it.  I responded by saying I should hope so, because this is a serious downgrade.  There is no way of grouping the last month of the season vs. the entire season or seeing if a player played LT or RT, SS or FS.  I could go on and on how I used to use PFF that I will not be able to do so now.  I used it a lot during DaF, but it wasn't my only source.

I had gone on there and it was changed up a ton, so I did a one day trial and I did not like it at all. I was fairly confused by their new format and didn't really like how mmuch they changed their grades

and it's a huge help in Daf, but I'll still use it as a reference.  I have gotten used it and it was only 15 for the year.

I used it the first year I did DaF, but I didn't realize they reduced the price so much.

It would be nice if we could have one year where we aren't being poached. You would think we would have been pretty safe being 5-11 and all.

Unfortunately Pagano knows Manachino personally and wasnt fooled.

Loved the guy and hate losing him. There's a reason we get UDFA LB's to contribute almost every year, at least at a much higher rate than any other position.

Tough loss, and I personally dont know if we have anyone waiting in the wings to take over. If anyone even hints at talking to Clarence, they better promote him immediately. Cannot afford to lose him too.

Hire Ray!

This! Any chance of bringing in Reed is gone since he's Buffalo's DB coach. Call Ray, see if he wants to do it. I'm not sure how much is left on his ESPN contract but it would be worth a shot. Otherwise I like the Pettine idea and even dipping into the college ranks.

it would be interesting to see if The Ravens can bring in Billy Davis, Mike Pettine, or Mike Nolan as outside linebacker coach.

Pretty please with lots of cherries on top. Mike Nolan is best case scenario.

Another guy I forgot about but I'd love to see come here is Leslie Frazier. I forgot all about him.

Hopefully Hue Jackson doesn't hire him first. Obviously he wouldn't be an OLB coach but maybe a defensive consultant or assistant like Spagnuolo was

That would be interesting and he could add some helpful tips especially towards the secondary. If The Eagles go along with hiring The Chiefs offensive coordinator  as their head coach then it's quite possible The Ravens will be in need of a new quarterback coach along with  a linebacker coach. Andy Reid would be in need of  new offensive coordinator once his current coordinator leaves and if he doesn't promote from within he could look to  Ravens quarterback coach Marty Mornhinweg as a candidate since they have history together.

Ravens are hiring Joe Cullen as DL coach. Had interest from that was initially blocked by Bucs but eventually allowed to interview.

I don't know what we're doing.

Well, it looks like this guy might be coming in to help with dline with Clarence Brooks going through recovery right now. I wouldn't rule out Don Martindale, the ILB coach, coaching all of the LBs.

I also wouldn't rule out the possibility that this indicates a scheme change. Joe Cullen comes from a Tampa 2 system and coached under Lovie Smith. If we moved to a 4-3, we wouldn't really need two LB coaches, but a second DL coach would be helpful. Suggesting that this hire is indicative of a scheme change might be a reach but hey, never know.

It's also possible that we're still in the market for an OLB coach. This move might just be to take pressure off CB.
