The Raven

End of Season Press Conference

296 posts in this topic

Although I initially thought the State of the Ravens Press Conference wouldn't be until later, it appears that it is actually tomorrow. Steve Bisciotti, Dick Cass, Ozzie Newsome, and John Harbaugh will be holding a press conference tomorrow to discuss their thoughts on the season and the upcoming offseason, according to the Ravens's official Twitter.

Grim, rmjacket, guess y'all were right about this being the one. Lol.

Can't wait for all the vague answers!

The Annual State of the Ravens conference is actually pretty in depth, honest, and straight up. The execs get very honest about the holes on the team and the plan to fix them.

I agree. I do think there could be some areas where they may be vague ... simply because they haven't made a concrete decision. For example ... I wouldn't be surprised if we hear that "we don't anticipate any coaching staff changes at the present time " ... meaning, they will still leave the door open for possible moves.

I'm not at all talking about Harbs ... or Trestman ... or even Pees. I'm just saying, they could make a statement that allows them to still consider to make some changes in that area.

Wow. I'm still shocked. I don't think we're ever done it this early. We must've already hashed things out and know what we're doing and how to improve. I have a feeling something may be announced at this. I'm not sure what but it seems too early and soon for us to have no plan

I'm not surprised. I'm sure it was discussed during the bye week and again later on in the season. It's just that Steve is quiet about this sort of stuff as it should be.

I'm just glad that we get this kind of information so soon as a fan.

That late for work article was interesting with Monachino potentially being a highly regarded choice for Colts DC under Pagano.  I've never been a complete Pees hater as I also think the Ravens have had some lack in talent lately, but could be interesting to see if true, if the Ravens think about jumping the gun and ending the Pees era and promoting Monachino to DC in order not to lose him.  I don't know much about him if he would be a good DC, but he certainly seems to know how to coach some linebackers. Also he seems to be one of the best coaches the Ravens have.

sadly that would just be delaying the inevitable, promoting monachino to DC would either lead to a HC job or would be a failed move leading to a demotion. if he would work out though i guess 1 good year is better than nothing, but sadly i think we have to go outside of baltimore to find a long term answer for dc, someone who is 100% content with being a DC and i dont think monachino would be one of those guys if the offer presented itself.

personally i wouldnt mind seeing romeo crennel here, he isnt the greatest but he calls our brand of defense, he isnt stubborn, hes a players coach, and he wont be getting any HC offers regardless of how good he may call our defense, unless some team completely forgot about how bad of a HC he was in cleveland...

I will be pissed off if Ted leaves for the promotion that we can match when we are still retaining Pees....

I second this.

The brass is pretty forthcoming. The problem typically is the questions they are asked. Too many softballs....."can you explain how it feels to finish 5-11?,etc.

They are not going to give anything different then the usual acknowledgement of failed areas. Nothing will be pinpoint. I wouldn't be surprised if Steve publicly issues a mandate with consequences. I hope the press asks Ozzie about his choices in drafts and how he thinks he can get better. Ask Decosta how long he plans to wait for the chance. Ask Haubaugh about his input in the grand scheme of the organizations. Which direction each entity would like to progress towards going forward. And anything besides the mundane we'll let you off the hook questions. And what about them uniforms being tweaked going forward ? JS

I honestly don't think there's many defensive coordinators out there that's set on being a defensive coordinator only  beside the ones that are just as old or older than Dean Pees. Romeo Crennel is The Texans defensive coordinator and The Texans are in the playoffs so I don't think he's going any where but anything is possible.

Agreed. They may be less detailed this season, but they usually give you good idea of the I direction, particularly when they discuss specific players.

Last year in particular (paraphrasing):

Ozzie said "you can't pay everybody market value" when he was talking about McPhee. Translation = he won't be back

I believe he referenced "right player, right price" when talking about Torrey. Translation = he will be back at OUR price or he won't be back at all.

Also called out Matt Elam, saying he needed to play better. Translation = were invested in him and are not giving up on him like many wanted.

Also believe he referenced the desire to do extensions with Jimmy and Yanda, which happened.

I'm not sure if this is the official state of the ravens press conference. Usually those are held in the early spring. I think this is just an end of season presser..but I could be wrong. Or maybe it just seems sooner than usual because we aren't in the playoffs this year?

Pretty sure it's the State of the Ravens...it's usually held a few weeks after the season. This one is unusually early.

Yeah I'm not sure either. Last year's SOTR press conference was in late February I believe, so about a month after our last game.

But then again, the 2013 one was in early January, so about a week after our last game.

I don't recall us doing two of these and apparently the whole gang will be here for this one, so it sure sounds like it's the big one.

Looks like they are going to try to get to work sooner rather than later. Cant wait to see what happens next. I know they still have to have meetings with Owner, GM and Coaches. Last season these meetings took place at Bisciotti's house. The Ravens can only go up from here.

Crennel would be fun but the Texans defense would have to fall off quite a bit in order for that to happen. About as likely as us getting Wade Phillips.

If you've ever managed a talented group of people, you know hiring can force you to choose between prospective time in the job and talent.  Get a less talented person and they'll stay longer.  Having managed actuaries for my career, I'll take talent over prospective tenure every time.

I don't know this for a fact, but given the source of Bisciotti's wealth, and an article he had published on the Ravens process to hire Harbaugh, I would guess he feels the same way.

In a defensive coaching staff, having that regular turnover at the top is VERY healthy if you have solid succession planning and can maintain the culture of hiring talent.  When a DC leaves, the positional coaches all get opportunities for promotion and there are new hiring opportunities.

So you want one DC for the next decade?  Be prepared for the talented positional coaches to move on for greener pastures.

Clearly the Ravens brass wants to get ahead of this one. Get on top of it and give the fans a comfort level especially considering we finished 5-11. I think Bisciotti understands the pulse of a football team pretty well! I'm also pretty sure that he'll be absolutely candid about his disappointment, but will also fully support the GM and HC moving forward. I actually believe he'll be more forthcoming that he typically is, much like he was during the Ray Rice saga. He is a great owner.

BTW, I'll be on plane to Seattle when the conference is on. Do you think BR.com will post the presser in full by end of the day?

The local media is not exactly fearless (this ain't Philadelphia folks), and so outside of Jerry Coleman, mostly the questions will be massive softballs, but what I'd like one member to ask Ozzie are these two: 1) whatever gave you the confidence to sign Suggs as long as you did, knowing full well his age and his conditioning?  and 2) why are both Jah Reid and Michael Oher starting on playoff teams when you in effect said the Ravens had no spot for either (even though we could have used both)?

Ozzie has almost all of the explaining in today's presser, though I won't hold my breath waiting for a hard question or a straight answer (the stick is he'll withhold media credentials, or at the very least delay them, for next season to the first reporter who publicly calls him out today - mark my word).
