We all know he will be coming back from a major injury, and we also know that he's no spring chicken anymore. Normally I wouldn't even question whether he would be back, but suggs hasn't been suggs lately. It's pretty clear he hasn't been the same since the Ngata trade. Now I know some people will say that's all hearsay and how could we know how he's feeling or what he's thinking behind the scenes...but I just read this little interesting tidbit from the locker room clean out transcripts:

On whether he has talked to OLB Terrell Suggs about suffering an Achilles injury: "Suggs is a little vulnerable right now, so I'm not going to talk to Suggs about it. He's not a ray of sunshine like he usually is." (laughter)

Is it possible suggs might hang em up? My opinion is he will be back, and the fact that joe, Justin and Steve are all rehabbing as well will actually help the situation and provide him some extra incentive since he will will not be going through it alone and they all have something to work towards together. But it's certainly worth thinking about.

Soon I am sure, but not yet.

I think he will at least play next year, at the very least.

Yea I mentioned this a long time ago. One reason why I think we need to aim for his successor. I think he comes back though

I don't think it's in his nature to retire like this. I'm not ruling it out but I think it's unlikely. One more year probably.

I think it's unlikely but still possible. With that said, I think he returns. 80/20. 80% he returns, 20% he retires.

I did find it odd that I heard weeks ago he was at the Castle and Harbaugh didn't know he was there, but Ozzie & someone else did, I think Ted Monachino. Seems strange that the HC wouldn't know a major player was there & even stranger the player didn't come find Harbaugh. I heard that on the radio, though, so I'm not sure how true it is. I think it was Preston.

I think he will be back if the rehabbing goes well. I know its kind of a different way of looking at it but think about this aside from rehabbing his  injury Sizzle is going to be well rested because he got injured the very first game of the season and I think he is still hungry and wants to retire on his own terms (same as SSS) not because of an injury. Sizzle will have had almost an entire season off. Not to mention  from what we have all seen on this web site Harbaugh is a very good coach at giving veterans days off from the physical work duties.

I think Suggs will be back, I don't think he wants to go out on an injury. At the same time, this could very easily be his last year

Yeah, I'm not sure how it is clear he hasn't been the same since the Ngata trade. He only played in a half of a game and has been recovering since. He seemed engaged and animated on the sidelines at the Steelers game and seemed to relish his role as leader, giving instructions, etc. I'm not sure I'd make anything out of someone (not sure who "he" is in this transcript) and their attempt to be humorous during locker room clean out.

I think the question will be how much of a step Suggs will lose and how will Suggs be come games 12 - 16 in the coming season. I'd be surprised if he retired and almost equally surprised if he was still playing in 2017.

I think suggs kind of feels like he just got hoodwinked. Maybe they gave him the impression that if he restructured they would be able to retain ngata- and when it didn't happen he felt kind of betrayed. Now he's kind of torn between being pissed off & wanting to move on and his loyalty for the team. That's really the only explanation I can think of for his attitude being this way for the last year. Either that or he just has a huge man crush on haloati and just can't seem to get over his departure lol... but the first scenario seems more likely. There's gotta be a reason for it, unless it's just a simple mid-life crisis. But it's obvious suggs hasn't been suggs- and now even other players are noticing and addressing it.

the quote was from Steve smith- I meant to include that. Take it how you wanna take it. Could be just playful humor.

I still find it a little odd that we keep hearing all these great updates on SSS, Forsett, Flacco, and the rest of IR's injuries, but we aren't hearing much on Sugg's recovery

IF he didn't contemplate coming back, he wouldn't be at the Steelers game cheerleading in the first place. If he had a choice he would rather be watching a bunch of movies, especially if he had no interest in coming back. Humbug! He is back with a vengeance!

Sizzle's definately mellowed this year, but I'm wondering if it had less to do with Haloti and a lot more to do with his getting divorced and having to fight for joint custody of his kids, who he adores.

It's been a hard year for Suggs in a lot of ways, but I didn't think the "mellowing" was necessarily such a bad thing - that woman leaving just took a  whole lot of craziness out of his life.

I think we'll see a much more mature version of Sizzle next year, with a determination and resolve that only comes from facing adversity.

He said if his Achilles is fine and he regains feelings he would like to play next year even if it is not in Baltimore. Exact words except for the mojo word. Apparently he is not happy bout the Ngata situation. There seems to be hard feelings Biscotti wanted an explosive edge rusher in the draft after failing to put any real heat on Brady in the playoff game. I mentioned it before but everybody only wanted to hear Suggs is returning to anchor the defense. He wanted the ravens to draft Grady Jarrett and the fact Grady lasted til round5 means management did not take his recommendation seriously as the defenses leader. Decision makers drafted Davis instead. Suggs probably would of been good with Grady going by mid round3. But he went round5 and some think Suggs feels decision makers did not respect his input. BTW as for Grady my opinion Grady is future pro bowl caliber. He is a penetrator and was played out of position in college at NT. But as a smaller but powerful and explosive penetrator he handled the nose pretty freaking good!! He put on a bad 16-17 lbs after his bowl game to get his weight numbers into the 300 range so he would not be labeled undersized for the nosetackle position he played. His 40 time went from 4.80 to 4.98 or something like that. As for Suggs it would be cool for him to play and coach up Zadarius and another edge rusher.

wow I wasn't aware of any of that- that actually could explain a lot.

and where did you hear that suggs was lobbying for this guy in the draft? Usually players don't get involved in any of that stuff, so I find that hard to believe, but what is your source ?

Full excerpt:

hen wide receiver Steve Smith Sr.took a question Monday about fellow leader Terrell Suggs (both are rehabbing from Achilles injuries), his answer raised ESPN’s Jamison Hensley’s eyebrows.

Smith was asked if he’s spoken with Suggs about the rehab, and he gave this “cryptic” response:

"Suggs is a little vulnerable right now," Smith said. "So, I'm not going to talk to Suggs about it. He's not a ray of sunshine like he usually is."

One can only guess what Smith meant by that comment, but Hensley pointed out that Smith is already out of his walking boot while Suggs was still wearing his a week ago. Suggs injured his Achilles almost two months before Smith.

When reporters asked Elvis Dumervilabout Suggs’ future, Dumervil simply said, "You can ask Terrell Suggs that question."

“Suggs was among the few injured players who didn't come into the locker room after attending the Ravens' season-ending team meeting,” wrote Hensley. “He hasn't spoken to reporters since he suffered the season-ending injury in the opener in Denver.”

Sounds like he's in the verge of retiring.

Well, lets at least look at it this way...

Its in the Ravens best interest, financially, if he does NOT retire. He would cost more against the cap in 2016 if he retires than if he plays.

Cap hit if he's on the roster = $7.45M

Cap hit if he retires = $8.85M

They'd be better off stashing him on IR for 2016 and then retiring in 2017 than they would having him retire now.

Its a bit concerning that he is still in a walking boot , I think he is there no matter what. He will either play or be on IR, cutting him won't be beneficial fincially

Question, if they were to do this, could Suggs officially retire during the season?

That I don't know. My guess is when a player formerly retires, that's it. Certainly think it would violate NFL/salary cap rules to try to stash a retired player on IR to avoid cap penalties in the short term.

Based on what I'm reading, salary cap protocol treats a retirement the same as a release.

I suppose you could argue it would be financially beneficial from a CASH perspective for the Ravens, since Suggs is owed a base salary of $4.5M this season, and they wouldn't have to pay him that if he retires.

But from a cap perspective, they are worse off in the short term.

I think the Suggs saga is coming to a close, and believe these comments and speculations are coming from the fact that he is getting older and perhaps a injury as such is not as easy to recover from as he did in his youth.

Frustrating I'm sure, but basically I think he will definitely return for another season if not two.

Bottom line, no way he ends his career on IR.

If Suggs retires, then I'd expect the team would ask him to do so after June 1st so they could potentially split the hit.

Possibility, not sure that's a route they'd want to go though.

He would only cost $2.95M against the cap in 2016, but would still cost $5.95M against the cap in 2017.

Not sure how the FO would feel about a $6M dead money cap hit for a player who wasn't even playing for you the year before.
