No new Arena in Baltimore until at least 2021, more improvements to Royal Farms

13 posts in this topic

They have installed a new video board at Royal Farms and upgraded the locker

rooms, although this is what I call putting band aids and lipstick on a 54 year old pig. They are resting on their laurels as being on of the top grossing

concert venues. Meanwhile Baltimore is still the largest city in America

without a pro hockey team, unless they spend some more renovation money on

fixing the ice surface, the only winter team will be the Baltimore Blast.

I remember when the USFL lawsuit verdict came in, the local radio announcer said "The handwritings on the wall" only way the NFL comes here is to build a new

stadium well the same goes for other sports. They would have been better off building a new arena now while the cost are cheaper rather than put more money

into an aging facility. If the NHL expands, so will the developmental system

and the parade will pass this city by.

All i want is an NBA team

Not with this dump, the current one isn't fit for a  D League team, let alone an NBA one.

There a team in the new ABA here, the Baltimore Hawks,  but the current version of the league is more like a huge semi pro organization.

Yeah, its truly unfortunate. I think this would be a great market for an NBA team, the arena/stadium situation does certainly seem to be the biggest holdup.

No NHL Baltimore cant support hockey. You saw how bad it was when we had Clippers,Skipjacks and Bandits. We do need NBA and Arena Football League

Baltimore is the number one market in the US without pro hockey. One of the reasons the Bandits moved was the Blast got almost all the weekend dates and they couldn't make money on a mostly weekdays home games.

The WHA Blades has no chance of succeeding since they were owned by the league and were just a place-

holder team for the old Michigan Stags. The Caps stunk back them too and the Mid Atlantic region couldonly support one bad hockey team, at least they had an owner, Abe Pollin.

We can't support hockey but we can support a fake football team?

Its not fake. Arena Football is one of the most created exciting sports. If you get a seat in the front row its like standing on the sidelines watching the game up close you'll get to see hard hitting tackles like you never seen it before. I been to one Marniers game and i saw hard hitting up close and personal,

There was a team called the Maryland Eagles at the Myers Pavillion last season, but they now play at a rec center in Wheaton.   They were more low budget than the Mariners in their second incarnation.   That team had to play their last two games on the road due to poor attendance at the Arena.  Even opening night I don't think they gave away all the Justin Tucker Bobbleheads and the crowd looked like it was less than 800.

I agree that Arena is a dump. If Shaffer would gave into Abe Polin and allow him built that Cap center in Baltimore we would still had the Bullets here.

Abe Pollin, Arnold Heft, and Earl Foreman who was the ownership group that moved the Bullets from Chicago probably just played at the Civic Center because there was no large arena in Washington at the time.  Also I went to a seminar about Baseball in Baltimore at the Sports Legends Museum with Phil Chenier, Mike Rieodan and one player from the Original Bullets teams of the later 40-early 50s that played at the old Baltimore Coliseum.  The players on the second team said the only time it was packed was when they played the Knicks..

There was an ABA team in Baltimore around 1975, first called the Hustlers, then when the controversy of the name, they changed it to the Claws.  The owners couldn't raise enough money for a guarantee bond to start the season and the team folded before it started.
