Well, do you not pay him and miss out on the destructive force he is? That's losing a guaranteed 12+ sacks and 40+ hurries. Not to mention the attention he commands.

I know you said defensive players aren't worth that, but in Watt's first DPOY season, he was disruptive (sack, hit, hurry, pressure, TFL, batted pass, or stuff) on literally one third of his plays. Is that not worth the money?

Yea I guess it is.  Just hard to say what that defense will be like with other key guys leaving.  I know its the nature of the business and market value.  At this rate, 5-10 years 200 mill contracts will be here

I very well think Luck could have a $200M contract. It would not surprise me to see him get around 8 years, $200M.

Pass rushers are now as valuable as a QB to the defense. How do you stop a good QB? Plant him on his butt every play.

Yea, once you sign that Defensive player, you better fully commit to building a dominant defense which is harder to do these days

NFL contracts are still just insane to me. Why do they not lower the overall figure and just fully guarantee them? Anyone be able to tel me the cap implications of that?

Honestly I always wondered that too.  I think the team might be worried about getting stuck with all that guaranteed money...Im terrible when it comes to the cap and how it works.

I remember hearing that Russel Wilson was trying to get something like that done, as far as numbers I don't know what would make a player happy.  5 years 80 mill guaranteed?

I couldn't tell you, either. I look it all up on Spotrac once it's all said and done with. I understand a little bit, but not very much.

I think that's what Russell Wilson was shooting for. If I was making $16M a season, fully guaranteed, I'd be thrilled, but that's just me. I doubt Joe actually gets close to making $80M on his deal.

Yea I can see it as more of a win for the player rather for the team, which Is why Im guessing a team doesn't do it.  Imagine if Collin Kap got 80 mill fully guaranteed...

Depending on how the cap situation shakes out, I could see it being a win for both. Is MLB the only sport with fully guaranteed or is it the NFL is the only one without?

I think its the NFL is the only one with out, I believe everyone else gets their contract money.  Where is Mcjacket when you need him

I just Googled it and the NFL is in fact the only one without. In MLB and NBA, that contract is fully guaranteed for the life of the deal. In the NHL, if you get cut, the team is no longer responsible for that contract.

this may be a little off-topic...but has to do with contracts and im mixing our convos.  But Glen "big dog" Robinson when drafted by the Bucks back in the day was offered a contract worth more than the entire franchise at the time...I think lol.  That has nothing to do with anything.....just interesting.

The NFL is in a league of its on on numerous things.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how that's even possible...

With how much money they make, they could stomach the loss for guaranteed contracts, especially if it were designed like the NHL

Tried to verify it, but apparently its pretty hard to find a valuation of the the Milwaukee Bucks for 1994....

I could be way off obviously

I don't think NBA teams are worth nearly as much as one would think, but I could also be off on this. What did Donald Sterling sell the team for?

I was discussing this with my friend is an avid Broncos fan and we were debating on if its worth it to pay a defensive player that much money.  Miller is no doubt a beast, but unlike a QB he cant consistently win games by himself.  As we are seeing when a player gets his big pay day, other players have to leave, usually its the QB who gets the big pay day though.  Thoughts?

My argument is if you Flacco goes down for the season and Von Miller goes down for the season which team wins more games?

So I just finished listening to Andrew Brandt on the Ross Tucker football podcast. He's on every Thursday and I highly recommend the listen for contract stuff. He was saying most likely Von is looking for closer to 60 mil guarantees which is more in line with suh Vernon watt than 40 the Broncos are offering and also trying to get the third year guaranteed. But the Broncos still have the franchise tag trump card and are hard negotiators.

He he also brought up the Luck contract. If anyone is going to be able to break the seal on a fully guaranteed contract that's it. Irsay wants the attention of paying out the biggest contract. He did it with Payton. (Which he never actually played out )

What John Elway and the Broncos didn't want to see happen. The Eagles and DE/DT Fletcher Cox has agreed to a 6 year $103M deal with $63M Guaranteed. Fletcher Cox is now the second highest paid defensive player(Suh is the highest paid and he even made more than Oliver Vernon and what the Giants gave him earlier) and got the largest guaranteed amount for a player outside the QB position.

I wonder if he got the third year fully guaranteed.  That's part of what Miller was looking for reportedly  a littke surprising with all the trade rumors for cox the last two years

I remember when Cox was coming out, a lot of mock drafts had him going to the Ravens, which I was against because I wanted to see them draft an ILB/OLB, but damn, that would have been a killer pick in hindsight.

Well deserved contract.

Turned out we never had an ounce of a chance...

As the draft drew nearer, I knew there was no way the Ravens would get him because he kept rising. I was actually glad for the reasons stated above (wanting ILB/OLB). How wrong can I be sometimes?

Von Miller says there's no chance he's playing under the tag in 2016

Players hate the tag, so this is no surprise.

Yeah it's just a little crazy how ugly the negotiations are getting between him and the team.

Elway is an idiot. Elway low balled him big time only offering $39M guaranteed. According to Spotrac that would only be 13th highest among all defensive players. Cox just got $63M, Norman got $50M, Dareus got $60M, Oliver Vernon got $52M and the Jaguars gave Malik Jackson $42M.

It's no wonder Miller turned it down.

Yea of course when he's seeing everybody else's contracts, but with everything going on it feels like a couple going through a bad breakup on social media lol.

Was Elway in charge with the whole fax incident? He seems very frugal when it's time to open the wallet... except for PeyPey.

Well considering it's harder to cheat the salary cap now compared to the 90's... You can see why.
