Yeah I don't see why they would straight up release him, I mean getting a comp pick next year vs the year after is cool but you have a crazy talented team. Try to make a run at a Lombardi and then have a plan in place for him leaving. There has to be more to this

Maybe Norman was going to hold out but why not trade him to a team who has a deal in place with him?

There's at least one player who does it every year so the Panthers should have known a holdout was coming when he was originally tagged. I just don't understand it at all, I mean to your point at least find a trade partner first before basically releasing him to become a free agent.

Yeah this is puzzling

Well the Panthers now have freed up $13.952M of cap room with that move. You guys don't think there is something else going on that we may know about soon enough? I don't buy that it's just because they couldn't come to a long term deal. Joe Thomas trade and the Browns acquire the 31st Pick for Joe Thomas and even more picks to shore up an offensive line that Denver's D dominated?

To me there is something deeper going on behind the scenes.

Teams that looked for a big-time CB in free agency and didn't come up with one: The #Rams, #Bears, #49ers, #Titans, etc. All have cap space.

I don't seem to be the only one thinking about trading Norman either

If it's just about sign-ability with Norman, wouldn't CAR fully explore tag and trade before draft??? This one is weird

I'm kinda having flashbacks to Ravens Talk when we released Will Hill out of nowhere. Then later found out he was going to be suspended 10 games. Are we about to find out Norman is being suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy or something?

That would be my best guess. Has to be something like that or this is an incredibly stupid move

Can't be that bad if he is already on a plane to Oakland and have dinner with Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie. Then again.... it's the Raiders.

Yeah the Raiders would make a lot of sense for Norman due to rumor that he wants to go to California and I am sure the Raiders would throw money his way.

I saw Matt Miller tweet this and I think it sorta makes some sense to it but at the same time it still doesn't make sense.

There is risk to Josh Norman, of course. He wants $16M a year and is almost 29 years old. Long-term deal is a risk.

Committing that much money to a guy who turns 29 in December and is close to that age 30 mark? Weigh that to the rookie scale and a younger corner in the draft is what the Panthers might be thinking. Also Ian Rapoport tweeted that Panthers GM doesn't believe in spending big money at CB and would rather spend the big money in the trenches.

CB is one of the longest positions to develop in the NFL though so I don't think a rookie could just step in and do well though. I think they are banking on their front 7 making people look good but like the Cowboys learned with RB last year, you need something there and their depth outside Norman wasn't all that great. They did sign Boykin but letting a guy like Norman walk out is one of the moves that will hurt them.

I don't think we have to worry too much about the Steelers getting him due to their cap but with all the interest, still have no clue why Carolina did not consider trading him

Did Norman get arrested for something heinous?

JPP blew off a chunk of his hand and kept his franchise tag. There would obviously have been teams looking to trade for Norman, even with his big price tag, and even if they could only hold on for a year.

Something is not right, more to the story.

If he doesn't sign his Tag can they still trade him?

I don't think so, that's a good point.

But they could have shopped him, worked out a deal, maybe the destination team would have a new long-term deal for him ready and waiting 'in principle', and then Norman would sign and the trade would go through.

Ah ok.  Yea it did seem a little premature.  Its like a couple that got in an argument and based on emotion one broke up with the other.  He didnt have to sign till July, so i agree with your premise.

I don't think there's anything to it.  I respect the hell out of the Panthers.  They probably realized a contract wouldn't be worked out and he was a late round pick.  Maybe they make a trade or felt the money was more important towards re-signing other guys.  They let him go without trying to without making it look real messy.  You'll get a great comp pick and he gets to choose his next team.  Maybe they feel the front 7 and scheme can make decent corners look like stars.

He really only had the one great year and apparently they weren't even close on a contract extension which meant he could have held out until the 10th game this season and would have been technically to me dead money on the books. Probaaly figgered they'd try to save money to resign both their awesome DTs and some guy named Luke. I would also believe they scanned the trade market for him also. Still shocking tho.

According to Ian Rapoport, Josh Norman has narrowed his choices down to the Redskins and Saints. Saints only have  $3.44M in cap room and only the Chiefs have less cap space.

From on @NFLTotalAccess: Last night, Josh Norman narrowed his focus to #Redskins & #Saints. Sean Payton called him personally. In talks now

That was quick. Per Adam Schefter Josh Norman is signing with the Washington Redskins meaning he gets to play OBJ twice a year. Should be fun.

5 years,  $75 mil.  whoa!

Redskins GM Scot McCloughan: "I will build through the draft and develop" "Build with the Draft, Sign our own"

Then Dan Snyder swiftly reminded him how much he loves to throw money at free agents by way over paying Norman.

Edit: $50M Guaranteed! That's QB Money!
