[News] Ryan Mallett's Two-Game Trial An 'Asset'

23 posts in this topic

Mallett looked good enough that I don't think we need to draft a QB. That frees up picks for much more needed positions like DB, WR, and OL.

Turned it off during the 4th Quarter, didn't know the circumstances around that 2nd pick. I think, all things considered, he's a plus to have on the team, in a backup role. The problems with the miscommunication between Mallett and the receivers on 5 or 6 plays, will most definitely be cleaned up next year. I've got to believe he's an asset for this team, for sure.

Turnovers! The interception followed by a touchdown by the Bengals is the difference in the game. Plus the 3rd down PI on Hill became a touchdown too.

I thought Mallett easily played well enough to stick around as the backup. He made quick reads, and he zipped some passes in some tight windows. He clearly has the physical talent, and he looked pretty comfortable in the offense. You can't expect much more with the lack of playmakers we have.

It will be an interesting off season. Will be sad to lose some of the players we are going to lose but we lose them every year. I would like to keep Osemele and Upshaw but we might not be able to

do that. Ozzie will have a lot of work to do to get us back to the playoffs.

I like the guys spirit. He plays like a Raven. And takes nothing off opponents who mouth off at him. He's a fighter. And that's good.

Unless you draft somebody and they turn out to be really dope in training camp, Mallet has to be the backup. Going back to Schaub doesnt make sense. He's shown us he's still the same guy from Houston. Quality of weapons aside (i know what he was working with), he's still gonna cost us more than help us. Clausen is just not as good.

Mallett is very similar to Flacco and makes much better sense as a backup than Clausen and Schaub, both who have lost or never had any zip on the ball. The benefit of Mallett is that he will be taking 99% of the snaps prior to next season and the similarities will help the other members of the team in making that adjustment back to Flacco. They both throw well, I would say Mallett is slightly more accurate than Flacco but Flacco has a wider variety of throws and can make that touch pass that seems to elude Mallett. We really got to see Juszczyk's and Maxx William's outstanding hands as Mallett seemed to be able to laser the ball into the 20 yard passes, but really made these guys dive and one-hand a number of short passes that were off the mark. The only major difference is Mallett is the anti-Flacco when it comes to his emotions. Where Flacco is a blank slate on the field, Mallett was showing some obvious frustrations with routes and other things. His problem has always been his inability to control his emotions so lets hope he continues to do that. Lets also not forget about his off field stuff too and if that doesn't get taken care of then nothing on the field matters.

I think Mallett is going to be the best backup we have had in awhile. He plays very similar to Flacco, and if Flacco can't recover in time, or gets knocked out of a couple games, Mallett can still give us a good chance to win, unlike Schaub or Clausen.

Holy smoke, this guy throws bullets. Not surprising we had a few drops, but his quickness and accuracy are pretty astounding.

Accuracy? Looked awful throwing downfield and threw a WR screen into the dirt that should of been a TD

Definetely a better option than Schaub and Clausen.

Those bullets also got away from him A LOT. He had two interceptions yesterday which could've been 4 or 5. He had just as many bad throws as good throws. Kaepernick also can throw a bullet, but if it gets away from you it is a turnover. I think he is one of the better back ups in the league, but lets just hope for a speedy recovery by Flacco...

Whether they choose to announce it or not the Ravens would do well to have a quiet QB competition to see who our best QB might be. After this season it's not as clear as it once was.

I think we should let Upshaw go in favor of keeping Osemele and Tucker. Those 2 should be the priority Re-signs this offseason

O come on. There is no quarterback competition nor is there any controversy, a term the media just loves to toss around. Joe Flacco IS the Ravens quarterback, period. While Mallett showed that he stands head and shoulders over Schaub (Ugh) and Clausen (eh), he played inconsistently in the two games. The first game he was great, the second, not so much. I hope they sign him, but, if Harbaugh doesn't let him play, he will be gone, just like Tyrod Taylor. There are times when Flacco just doesn't have it and Harbaugh does nothing, watching as the game goes down in flames. It is no crime to be off. Even the great ones have bad days, but it is up to the coach of the team to do what is right for the team, not what is right for the quarterback. There are times when Harbaugh should have pulled Flacco, even if only for a set or two, but he didn't and we lost.
