So, if Flacco plays under his current cap structure of 28.55 M how does it affect us assembling a competitive team or does it really affect it? The Ravens seem to be comfortable leaving his contract be and I'm sure Joe doesn't care to change it either. So, what happens when his cap figure goes to 34M next year? If Flacco is the future QB of this team, why aren't the Ravens all over him to redo his deal? Or is there something that we don't know about Flacco's future with the team? Very confusing situation indeed.

I'm not really sure they are comfortable with leaving it as is, but that's what they've got to say at this point because that's how negotiations go.  There's now way they were going to say anything about needed to get it done because that would have played right into Linta's hands.

Do they HAVE TO get his restructured/extended?  No.

Do they need the Cap space from a restructure/extension?  Yes, likely so.  Otherwise, they are going to have to find it from somewhere else and that could mean parting with players that they'd rather otherwise keep.

I know Linta will play it hard, but I have to believe Flacco wants more rings and knows that most likely depends on him extending. I think it get's done.

I'm sure they can very easily figure out - and agree - on how to reduce his 2016 Cap number.  The tough (contentious) issues are going to be the other terms of the deal and just what Linta is going to push for as far as yearly average, guaranteed money, etc.

I think it will get done too, but I also think it's going to be painful.

idk, I think it would have been much more painful had we won the SB again in 2014.  And I guess you have to describe what you feel is painful.  We have to pay a franchise QB, that's pretty much a sunken cost for a successful franchise.  The alternative would be to take a flyer on a rookie and start the process all over.

Oh, I don't disagree at all.  I just think this deal is going to be tougher to reach than a lot of people think. But, I agree, in the end, it will (or at least, should) get done.

Well how about if a Ravens fan wins the powerball? Lol if I do Lintas the first person I call. Resign a deal, Ill write you a check for the rest lol. This a legal binding agreement. Drop Joes cap by 10m per year for the next 6 years. Ill cover the difference.

Ive slowly changed my mind. My new 1st round interest is Treadwell. After watching tape on him, hes essentially a bigger faster Steve Smith. He needs work on his routes, but his play is in the likes of Sr, Ward, Dez bryant, etc... That fierce competitor who will lay out a CB down field to spring a RB. Fight for every yard. High points the ball and wins those matchups more often than not. His rookie year hes gonna get some push off calls because hes aggressive, but we can live with that.

Just with Pees staying we have to put teams away early and score TDs. Maybe a big bullying offense is the key now. Break a defenses will. Treadwell, Perriman, Sr in the slot. Aiken coming in as a sub when needed. Along with Maxx, Gilmore and Boyle, with Buck in the backfield and Juice at FB. Thats alot of weapons for Trestman to play with and DCs having long nights and headaches.

This draft is deep at CB and DE/OLB. Grab the best available in the 2nd and 3rd rds there.

Can someone explain to me why the Ravens and Flacco don't sit down and come to an agreement similar to the Pats and Brady? Everyone knows he is our QB for the next 5 years so why not tack on 2 extra years to the deal, spread the cap hit over the next 5 equally and make the money 100% guaranteed if he will take less money per year, say in the range of 16 million (way more than Brady gets). A 5 year $80 million 100% guaranteed deal for Flacco would give the ravens way more flexibility to go get key pieces and help us win now. 16 mil cap hit per year is definitely manageable. I am not super well versed on contract numbers though, so if I am way off please tell me why

Contract negotiations aren't easy to get done it takes some time for that stuff to get settled especially if the player agent is difficult at times to come to agreeable deal.

Brady is driven like not too many players. He already had 3 SB victories prior to giving up money. Joe has one and still not in Brady's financial stratosphere.

People assume Brady takes less.  Brady restructures to get that money upfront as opposed to weekly.

For example, if his salary is 17M (a million per week of the season), he simply has them convert 10M into a bonus he gets all at once.  That 10M cap hit gets spread out over the course of the contract and Tom gets the remaining 7M in 17 installments that year.  He never takes less.  Here's a quote from an article on Brady:

Before the renegotiation, Brady was scheduled to make $30 million through a couple of high salaries. After the renegotiation, that number became $33 million, consisting of a $30 million signing bonus (the last deferred payment of which was paid in February to the tune of $5 million) and salaries of $1 million for 2013 and $2 million for 2014. Thus, the Patriots got better cap flexibility due to the prorated bonus while Brady received significantly better cash flow and an extra $3 million to boot.

Perfect solution to the flacco contract.

8mil saving his year, 7 next. And a flat cap hit for the following years of in and around 25 mil per year.

Joe's not worth a cap hit of 25 mil a year. With the scenario the writer laid yes we might save 8 mil on the cap this year but we'd be right back in the same mess and wouldn't be able to dig out for another 2 yrs. I really like Flacco but looking at this it might be better to take the hit and hope for a killer draft and try to stay as injury free as possible lol.

Just wait and see all the QBs who are actually going to get that. Joe would be worth every penny of those  25 mil

According to the article Rodgers was averaging 22 mil a year and we're gonna jack it up by 3 grand? Then if we did actually do it Joe would have complete control for the next 3 yrs. I don't think its a good idea for the team to be held over a barrel like this.

cap hit doesn't equate to salary average.

Cap will also rise, so while it says 25 if that was pro rated in terms of what the cap is this year yur likely looking at a cap hit of about 20, which is just above what he's on now.

It's also a flat cap hit qeih means their would be no year, like presently, were we virtually have to extend/restructure his deal to do anything.

There are reports that Kirk Cousins may get $21M+ a year after one good season.  Flacco is absolutely worth a $25M cap hit.  This is what QB contracts are nowadays.

Its not always a guarantee the cap is gonna rise. I know hindsight is 20/20 but the flat rate is what we should have did in the 1st place but at the time of his deal we was already tight against the cap so I understand it but after the 1st year they should have flattened it more across the board. Glad I'm not a capologist. Sheesh.

Secretly I'm hoping since Joe did receive 62 mil he'd cut us somewhat of a hometown discount but that agent......... and seriously if Joe is gonna make that type of money he's gonna have to step up in the regular season. He's never even made the probowl for goodness sakes.

Have to see it 1st. If I was the Skins I'd franchize tag him and make him prove it another year.

Still looking at $20M or so on the franchise tag.  This is just how much QBs are going to cost nowadays.  When you get a competent QB, you have to pay to keep them.

Yeah but at least you're only on the hook for 1 yr. My main problem is Joe should not be highest paid and I don't really look at the base salary. Cap hit is the only thing that concerns me.

$25M cap hit each year is not something uncommon.

I didn't realize that. I know Brees has an extremely high cap hit like 30 mil or so which is ridiculous but I'd have to do a little more research and tonight is not the night lol.

Joe is #2 for 2016 in cap hit, but #3-9 on the list are $20M+.  Something else worth mentioning is that a lot of QBs are still early in their deals, and they're backloaded as well, meaning their cap hit is only going to go up in the coming years.

I know Rodgers rate is flat. Ive seen his contract before but yeah I'd like to see what Cam and Russel's contracts look like. It does seem like the Ravens are starting to get out of backloading contracts. Off the top of my head Monroe,Zuttah and Suggs's contracts are mainly flat. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is just not good business and the Ravens practiced this for the longest time. Ngata contract for instance. It just seems like we lean too much on signing bonuses and don't put enough incentive clauses in contracts.

Players don't want incentive clauses. They want as much as they can get in their signing bonuses because that's the only part that is fully guaranteed. Need to have those signing bonuses to sign the players.
