[News] Byrne Idenity: Week Of Selflessness To Get Mallett Ready

20 posts in this topic

Says a lot about the character of Matt and Jimmy, they put the team first.  Say what you want about the FO and some of their decisions, but they know these guys inside and out before they bring them on board.

Happy New Year to all our guys.. and all the fans!

Ryan Mallet beat the hottest team in football so they say with backups on Offense! Why couldn't the Ravens play like this when Joe was behind center with starters?! This is how much power the QB position has over the whole team, "EVERYBODY" played better, I mean "EVERYBODY"! Beat the bungles and Ryan can run for President and starting QB!

Mallett played against a 30th ranked pass defense.. That makes things a bit easier. He also didn't have James Hurst doing his best impression of a turnstile on his blindside.

I don't know that the Ravens offense hadn't played equal to this performance at several points during the season - but didn't get the win because our opponents offense thrashed us.

So, I think the real question is - The Ravens D held one of the top scoring teams in the NFL to only 17 points, when they've been scorched by lesser opponents. So I think the question is, "why couldn't the Ravens D play like this through the earlier part of the season?"

Gotta go with balfan23 on this.. the offense hasn't been that bad this year, it's been a defensive issue right from the start.

The offense was playing much better with Joe under center. The offense scored 20 against the Steelers, and was averaging more than 20 with Joe. In fact, the offense has failed to score more than 20 in all 5 games without Joe, and they are only averaging 12.6ppg without him. The defense has been much better recently, which is the main reason we beat the Steelers.

Joe Flacco played at a high level to be honest, almost every game we loss we did it for only 6 or less points. The Offense with joe played really well, Strange enough the defense loss those games. We should be in the playoffs.

All practically meaningless points, considering neither QB played w/the same supporting cast. Plus, once a team, any team, fully realizes they are not going to the playoffs, the quality of play changes. Throw in the schedule differences as to what the quality of the opponent is from week to week and you are comparing apples to oranges to grapefruit.

When nearly two dozen players (most who starters and key backups) go on IR, it's going to take time to find the players who deserve to be on the field.

With the season defined as "lost", we have seen players forced to step up - and we have seen some fail but others have made a deference. We also are seeing the results of growing together!

In the offseason, the coaching staff will have SUNDAY game film to evaluate what the team needs going forward, the front office will have actual results to determine who needs to be added via the Draft or Free Agency and, finally, players will have seen the real meaning of "next man up" and most of them will work harder in order to be real candidates for next season! Injured players getting healthy, experienced backups, holes plugged by the front office - and we should be excited about the future!

They are not meaningless points at all. Right now, the 49ers are last in the NFL in ppg, with 14.6. Without Joe, our offense is averaging 12.6. Saying that the supporting cast has changed enough to cause that much of a dropoff is laughable. Even without SSS, the offense averaged well over 20 ppg with Joe, and he had less of a supporting cast than the backups have had. Joe had James Hurst protecting his blindside, causing all kinds of pressure. Ever since KO moved to LT, the pass protection has been much better than what Joe had, and the run game has been better. The defense is getting off the field much better on 3rd down, providing more opportunities for the offense, and Butler and Mathews are better than Marlon Brown, yet we're still averaging more than 8 fewer points each game without Joe. You obviously don't like Flacco, so you're letting your bias distort your view of reality.

After we got jobbed against JAX, I felt like we had nothing to gain this season except a draft pick, but it actually has been encouraging to see the defense play so much better recently. I'm not sure if we'll keep KO, but the o-line has been great with him at LT. If we can keep that going into next year, and get our offense healthy, this team will be right back in contention.

Thank you for this excelllent article Kevin. I have thought many times about how amazingly unselfish Schaub and Claussen were to put the needs of the team above their own disappointment in finding out they would not be starting. I have tremendous respect for our other 2 backups, especially for Schaub and I am sure that they played a part in Mallet getting the offense down enough to get the victory against the Steelers. What a lesson for Mallet in being a team player, to contrast his recent wrong reactions in Texas with what happened right in Baltimore. Two selfless, equally disappointed teammates dedicated their efforts to helping Mallet for the betterment of the team, as opposed to pouting or acting out. Mallet has seemed genuinely surprised and grateful in each of his interviews, mentioning the help he got from the other QBs. I am really proud of Matt Schaub for his selfless contributions to the team from day 1 of the season, always involved, excited and helping where he can on the sidelines. This may be exactly the perfect way to help Mallet learn what it means to be a pro and how to conduct himself. Mallet seems humbled by the graciousness of his teammates and I hope his growth and maturity continue as he sharpens his mastery of the offense and to help him accept his backup QB role with the Ravens. Sincere thanks and respect to Matt and Jimmy.

In reading through these posts.....I noted there was a reference to mallet competing for starting QB.....I wondered how long it would take for that crap to surface.

Joe is our QB unless he is hurt......PLeeeeese don't start the Millet for president or starting QB.....it just foolishness.

Now, I'm not one of the folks calling for Mallett to start over Joe next year at this point however, it is not "Foolishness" to think that the Ravens are going to put the best man available on the field.

The reason for the urgency at getting Mallet some live action is not only to see if he can back up Joe but to also evaluate which QB on our roster now, gives us the best chance at winning, moving forward. Emotions take a back seat to money in this game and if Joe stinks up the joint, starting next season and we remember how well Mallet did (If he finishes well) then the masses will be calling for Joe's head and it will take less time than it did to post this. You can pretend that you'll stick with Joe no matter what but several have already jumped on and off that bandwagon several times, just this year alone.

It's a contract year for Joe and we're trying out QB's like there's no tomorrow! Not so foolish to think the Ravens are running a business.

Extremely well said, salamander, and spot on. I've said since the signing of Mallet that I think he has more talent than either Shaub or Clausen. The Only question was whether or not he had learned his lesson about his Extremely immature and selfish reactions to what happened to him in Texas. So far, he has acted and said everything right, and Shaub's and Clausen's actions should do nothing but give him excellent models of what true professionals are. If Mallet really Has learned and matured I believe that we will have one of the best backup QBs in the entire league going forward. Not since Mark Bulger have I felt as good about our chances to win in the event we have to go without Joe. Yes, I Do recognize what Tyrod has done this year in Buffalo, but for us to have been successful with him at QB I think we would have had to modify our offense a bit. With Mallet's skill sets being so similar to Joe's, I don't think that would be necessary. I just hope that Mallet's head stays right, because I have confidence in his abilities. Thanks to Shaub, Clausen, and All the coaches who helped prepare him for the game against the Squealers, and good luck to you, Ryan, this week against the Bengals.

I feel the same way and, as difficult as it will be, and as much money as it will probably take, I sincerely hope that we can keep KO here where he belongs. He is a serious upgrade over Monroe at LT, and our OL has been playing better since he was slid outside. Come on, Joe, help Ozzie with the money to secure your blindside more effectively by providing him with the resources to re-sign KO with your contract extension. And come on, Ozzie, find a way to keep KO as our LT moving forward. As the talking heads say, "C'mon, guys!"

So, after only Two games, IF Ryan plays well enough to beat the Bengals, you're ready to start the QB controversy, huh? You know something, Dawg, if Anybody else had written your post I would have been extremely surprised, if not down right shocked. It has been so painfully obvious that you have been a Flacco hater for such a long time, though, it doesn't surprise me, in the least, that you would be the one to first get on that band wagon. I'll just say that a agree with balfan, and others, that the play of the defense has been the biggest reason for our better play of late, Not the QB.
