[News] Ryan Mallett's Out Of The 'Old Regime'

32 posts in this topic

The best scenario would be if Mallett had another good game on suday, and then he would be Flacco's backup next season. However, if he really has 2 great games this season, he could just as well be great trade material for teams that lack a QB with playmaking potential...

Either way, the Ravens will win.

Mallet I have a piece of advice for you. In the future refrain from statements like 'My name isn't Joe' even innocently. Joe is highly regarded here in Baltimore and is a SB MVP and the primary QB of the Ravens. I know you want to make the most of your second chance, but please understand that with the Ravens you will only be a back up to Joe. And you will be promoted to QB only and only if Joe gets hurt! Don't think for a second that Joe will ever be replaced by you for poor play because that will not happen. So sometimes reconciliation of your position in the team may be how you make the best of your second chance. And with those words, I wish you the best New Year!

I'll commend Mallett for his new found work ethic. I'd also like to point out the underated offensive coordinator the Raven's have in Marc Trestman. The way he has navigated the injuries this season, has been nothing short of incredible. Though the results haven't gone their way, constantly shuffling the playbook for younger and less experienced players is difficult. Still as of now, they are 8th overall passing yards, 14th overall yards. The obvious areas of improvement are the points 23rd overall and running game at 24th overall. The points is a bit expected going with more and more less experienced players week by week. Basically building a foundation for next season. The running game is a bit surprising, even with early injuries. Buck is great at catching and may be playing a factor in that stat, but run game needs to be fixed to get back to competitor status. It's the difference of closing out those tight games, like the first 7 or 8 games decided by 8 pts or less, most of them in the lastfew minutes of the game too. I see a promising 2016 season.

Also gotta draft this WR Sterling Shepard OU Sooners. He is very similar in size, attitude and aggressiveness attacking the ball as SSR. What better team to draft him with a #2 pick.

I don't have a problem with it. I want a backup who has the confidence that he could be a starter.

Hmmm... okay that is alright, but just given Mallet's history it was concerning to me. If it was anybody else, I wouldn't have thought anything of it.

I've said this before and have had some tell me I'm out of my mind to think that anyone would be willing to make a trade for him after he was available to the entire world for a song just a few weeks ago and has had only 2 good games to change that perception. They have also said that, it may not make sense for us to want to move the guy when we honestly don't know for sure whether Joe's injury could linger and would still need a viable backup for him.

Still, I think it will be that the FO are going to be open to hear what other teams might want to offer and be ready to make a move, should someone be willing to really go out on a limb and offer something significant for him.

I have to assume the defense will be a lot tougher to move the ball against this week than last ... given the Steelers D (especially secondary) isn't much and that we were at home vs. now going on the road. It will be a good test for Mallett and the Ravens offense.

I am focused on us looking good - win or lose. If we have a negative offensive performance, all the positives discussed since last week will melt away and we'll be hearing about how this guy is worthless.

How Mallet looks in a non-Bellichick-ian scheme with this grouping of skilled players in Trestman's offense is now a matter of public record. A lot of what we saw last Sunday was one-read passing and quick releases. He did a great job on 3rd downs of pre-snap reading and adjustment.

Now the real assessment starts. Who does Mallett like to look to in certain downs and distances? Which plays does he likes to check to in certain pre-snap looks? What looks force him to check the ball down? How does he react to A-gap, B-gap, C-gap pressure (which Cincy constantly keeps changing up).

Cincy is desperate for a bye week to get Red back in the roster and not have to play Wild Card weekend with a hurt backup or worse yet, Keith Wenning. So they'll be throwing everything they have at Mallett.

Should be a great one to watch for this young man. Throwing him to the tigers in the jungle.

I sort of remember ( oh yea!) this guy, George Blanda, Detroit Lions. He came to every game with a hang over and loved it. He also kicked winning field goals. Old school perspective: it doesn't matter the night before as long as your stomach doesn't get in the way of the football, and it was Atkins, rest in peace bro, who broke Unitas's nose. He was a monster.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Ryan showed the type of leadership needed on Offense and the Defense fed off him! Joe would have lost that game making players look bad with bad passes and excuse after excuse and now everyone can see we could of been winning with the rite person "LEADING" us something Joe wants no part of! Do not let Ryan Mallet leave Bmore unless it's a medical emergency! Letter Ryan leave would be like Joe throwing our Super Bowl away last season!

So, all of this....cause the man was being true to himself and answered a question..from a reporter who thinks and believes that the Bengals has Joe's number?  How come you're not mad at the reporter for asking the question?

And now it begins........

Mili you got it all wrong! I'm not mad at Mallet, but just concerned. Why am I concerned at potentially an innocent remark to a question? Because of the source - Mallet. What do we know of Mallet so far outside of his winning us a game against the Steelers?

We know he's been a corrosive teammate. We know he's shown immaturity in handling situations such as being benched. He has pouted when asked to stay on the bench and generally shown enough that a team like the Houston Texans (who by the way are dying to have a QB for the long term and who by the way are coached by a HC that recruited Mallet for the Pats) let him go after giving him chance after chance to prove himself worthy of the NFL!

There is a lot of scrutiny that comes with NFL players first and foremost. Now take everything we really know about Mallet in the context of who the Baltimore Ravens are. The Ravens are a team that fosters brotherhood and camaraderie within the team. They don't take well to division within the team or locker room. That's why we are who we are and why we've been successful as a franchise.

Now why is it so wrong for me to question the intent of his response against this back drop I just laid out for you?

In fact, I would think that Mallet has earned himself extra scrutiny to prove himself worthy of being a Baltimore Raven. So, in response to your remark, I will not question the reporter that asked the question.

More importantly, I think it was a legitimate question that Mallet could have handled with far more tact and humility than he displayed.

I really want a victory against the Bengals and know that it will take a total team effort to make that happen. If we get the win ('we' as the Team) than hopefully Mallet's played a role in the victory, but just a role. There aren't any 'No Hitters' in football where you could give an overwelming share of the victory to a single individual like in baseball.

If the Ravens win it doesn't mean that Mallet has proven himself to be a leader, gained maturity or is even a starter, yet. It simply means that the Ravens won. Trying to create any other scenario beyond that is beyond reason. That said, I want this game and I want the entire team to play like Ravens - the 'entire' team. Next season, I hope that he can be a great backup to Joe or just have general career success on his 2nd chance. Many never get 3rd chances.

GO Ravens!!! Time to end 'The Life of Pi' 2016.

I really don't get the need that people feel to quickly discredit Mallett.  It's like cats in here have to constantly state that just because he played fairly well on Sunday that he's just a "backup" to Joe Flacco.  To me, that pretty much goes without saying!

It has begun.....

Very impressed with Matt Schaub's unselfish attitude in working with Mallett. Don't know what happened to cause his passing game to go south in the past 3 years but he's always been a gentleman and a good teammate. Wishing him luck in the future.

There are 3 types of responses I'm seeing:

  • Those that  appear to discredit Mallet somewhat to defend Joe from those who discredit him
  • Those who elevate the debate to discredit Mallet or Joe because there aren't many other subjects here this 'sexy'
  • Those who try to add levity to the other 2 groups that may appear to discredit both

For me, I fall into the 3rd group. I don't think anyone can reasonably make an argument either way with such a small Ravens sample size (1-2 games), not knowing Joe's current recovery, not knowing where Mallet's career goes from here or what the draft and FA off-season will bring. Isn't it really both a mute point and oddly tempting conversation at this time at best?

Okay let me make my stand very clear this way. Look I love Mallet's play against the Steelers. I think that was perhaps one the better QB displays by any of our QBs this year. Having said that, as a newcomer (brought in as a potential backup) especially at QB, you need to show deference and humility towards a long established QB here. He did not with is response and that is my view and I stand by it.

Interesting concepts.

I just don't understand WHY our fan base just can't be happy with a "backup" QB that performs well when called upon in the absence of the "starter" if he's unable to go.  Mallett did what was asked and expected of him Sunday.
