[News] Steve Smith Sr. Announces He's Coming Back

91 posts in this topic

With the level of injuries we suffered at WR, and the maneuvering needed to stay competitive, we are one journeyman WR away from being a great WR corps in 2016. Using another high draft pick on a WR seems like a possibility now that we're probably going to be on the fringe of the top 10 of this years draft, but still only Tredwell seems worth picking in the top half of the first round and he shouldn't go before 12-14, and we will be picking 4 spots higher. Instead we should turn to the dozens of free agents, even if it means giving up a comp pick. I like the possibility to snagging one of Cinci's two dynamo receivers. Think of how great our WR corps could be with SSS, Aiken, Perriman, Sanu/Jones. Plus whomever of the fringe players ends up making it will have to make an impact, whether that be Waller, Campanaro, Givens, Matthews, Brown, or Butler. And there's always the possibility of drafting one or more lower round WR to compete as well. I think our WR problems will be an easier fix than our secondary by a long-shot.

Its good that smith is coming back cuz our young receivers need a veteran mentor to help develop and motivate them, but I hope the ravens don't bring him back as a #1 next year. We should do him like fitz and have him rotating between a # 2 and 3 and pick up a good receiver in the draft in the middle rounds cuz though some of these young receivers show a lot of promise half of them will be cut probably.

Great news! SSS has a lot of catches left in him. But I think his leadership for the whole team, and not just the receivers, is huge. With Ray Lewis gone, then Sizzle hurt, then SSS hurt, we had no inspiration. Flacco just isn't that kind of guy (which is fine - I don't blame him for that). But you need an individual to get the team fired up, and SSS is definitely the guy. Regarding the receivers, I will stick to my view that we should not draft a WR. We've already proven that we're not so great at that. I don't know why. It just is what it is. But what we are good at is bringining in late-career receivers who become hugely important to the team. Examples are D-Mason, Q, and SSS. So . . . . I think we take the plunge and spend the money on a high quality FA. Then use the draft to shore up the secondary. Just my opinion, but I'm convinced that for some reason we're cursed when it comes to drafting WR's.

I'm trying to figure out what people think a '#1 receiver' is. Steve Smith was on pace for 92 catches for 1340 yards and 6 tds, but those are the projections if he had played the full first 8 games. He really played about 6 games.

his leadership and locker room presence is more than welcomed back but i hope the fo does not want him as our #1 or 2 receiver. at his age he needs to be more of a 3rd down receiver which will allow him to be stronger late in the season and not have too much abuse on his body. perriman is a ? so finding a #1 should be the goal. aiken proved that he can be a solid #3 or 4. the rest of the guys can battle it out for the #5,6 or special teams

Oh I'd love to see that happen. Ruben Randall, Alshawn Jeffry, and Travis Benjamin all become free agents. I'm not asking for much. Please make it happen Ozzie!

NO WAY SSS was going out like this. 1 more season will do him good and go out with a complete season with some solid numbers. And, he will help our young guys learn how to play at a higher level. Aiken could become a solid WR under Steve's leadership. Ice Up SSS, we can't wait to see you next season.

If SSS returns it's probably for only 1 year. The Ravens still need to bring in a FA vet at the right price and add another WR in the middle of draft. Some of the guys currently on the roster will have a hard time sticking around. Campanero is injury prone so far and Clay is a solid returner. M. Brown has been declining. Perriman is a question mark but Ravens will keep 1st round pick. I see Smith Sr., Aiken, Perriman as locks but after that who knows. Butler, Matthews, Givens have contributed, but it will depend or who is brought in to compete since Perriman is a big question mark on skill and health and Ravens needs a deep threat.

First we sweep the Steelers, now SSS is coming back? Best week of the season, no doubt. We love you here Steve and we want to so badly send you out the way you deserve. We will rally from the hardship of this season with an angry vengeance that will make us serious contenders again, mark my words.

I have had a torn Achilles, it isn't an easy injury to return from, with any amount of explosiveness! I know SSS will come back with a vengeance and work hard to be our #1 receiver! We need to find an insurance policy in the first or second round to help send Smith out with a ring next year !

I love the fact that he waited for us to beat Pittsburgh before he made his announcement. Just two years of practice with this guy has Aiken and Butler grooming into reliable playmakers. Hopefully that work ethic rubs off on Perriman.

I am very happy to hear that SSS is returning to play and will try to end his career on his terms. If his production was declining I wouldn't agree with the move, but seeing the way he was schooling DBs before his injury is a testament to his skill and preparation.

To those saying that Perriman is a big question mark and lacks work ethic injuries have happened to almost half of our team this year and his injury is not one with long term effects. The young man is a proven playmaker and was doing a great job before the injury. As long as he can keep his body in shape he projects to be a great receiver without a doubt.

I love having Steve Smith on the team, even if he isn't as clutch as he was in his younger days. He is a leader and a mentor to the younger guys. And you have to love the way he plays with all his heart and soul! He is in the Ray Lewis/Ed Reed mold, where you just lay it all out for your team. If we had to lose Anquan, at least we got a great replacement in SSS. Welcome back!

How sad are the Ravens when everyone gets excited with a 37 year old receiver? What the heck does that say about the Ravens finding players? I'm glade he back as a leader but I also wanted that with Ed Reed back a few years ago and were still have a bad secondary.

Sorry to hear you tore that. From what I know, it sucks! I'm curious tho, since you know first hand how the recovery process is like. How long did it take till you got your burst back? It took Suggs a year and a half till he was close to 100 percent on the field.

So should we reasonably expect Sss to start the year at 80percent? I love the guy but he is 37 and is coming off a horrible injury that takes a loooot of time till a players recovers fully. Is he gonna be close to 100 percent near the playoffs? Or is that also a reach?

Definetely good news, maybe he can have a going out gift like Ray, with his determination and ferocity he definetely is one of those players that deserves a ring. To think that Hines Ward has two and he has none is very agitating and I don't think there's a debate as to whose better. It used to seriously bother me that Troy and Porter had rings over Suggs and Reed but that was taken care of eventually.

I still say I wish he wasn't coming back!

With what we're observing with Kamar Aiken, big WRs Chris Givens & Chris Matthews with Campanero and we still haven't seen what Perriman will bring, Smith's going to take away reps from Ravens who should be learning to play together!

THINK! What difference will Steve Smith actually make when he's dropping almost 30% of his chances?   We're not yet a contending team, capable of winning it all and we have so-o-o many unanswered questions!

It's really not a smart move to have Smith back when the only thing that will be achieved is him padding HIS individual numbers!

good luck to Smith but he drops too many passes. If they keep him, only for 3rd down short stuff.

ABSOLUTELY! Great point!!!

We have Perriman, Kamar Aiken, big WRs Chris Givens & Chris Matthews with Campanero possibly also a Slot!  Save Smith for the third Downs!
