[News] Eisenberg: Marc Trestman Has Earned Another Year As Offensive Architect

81 posts in this topic

Flaccos decision making lets be honest at times was subpar at best. he constantly looked for the big play instead of taken what the defense gives you. Sure Mallett has zero and i mean zero mobility but he took what the defense gave him and he took advantage of his opportunity. I just wish flacco trusted his arm and his guys enough to where he would put it in tight places. and move the ball. Go back and watch film, how many of his sacks were due to him holding onto the ball and not even willing to check down to the RB. this is Trestmans offense. Part of his offense is RBs getting receptions. I dont put down what joe has done for us in his career. but his performance has been lack luster at best. And this is a league of what have you done for me recently. His current performance hasnt lived up to his contract this year. 12 interceptions before he went down.... a losing record... blame it on who ever but the fact remains the offense goes through him. and it was simply just not going at times. not putting up points. getting off the field to soon. etc etc.

Trestman is still in the hands of the jury. He's fighting to retain OC for '16. It's the players that make him look good. You have the four horseman...don't forget the seven mules with or without a coach.

Flacco is also part of the equation. Could it be Flacco? More food for thought.

well... you just started the process of feeding thought!

Lets be very clear here about Flacco's performance and those of Clausen, Schaub and Mallett. Flacco was playing behind an offensive line that was playing horribly. Wagner was routinely rated as a negative by PFF, Monroe was never really serious about his job and Hurst, well the spelling of his name is correct because that is what they put dead people in and he cost us Flacco and Schaub. Once Clausen and Mallett got in there, KO was at left tackle, Ryan Jensen has played at a phenomenal level, and the whole line kept Mallett upright except for once against the Steelers. So to say Flacco was not as successful and throwing off his back foot was purely out of self-preservation and had he actually had a front line, he would have been as successful as these other guys.

Not to throw your logic off, but I think the metric we need to really measure is offensive line performance against the time the QB holds on to the ball as well. Against the Steelers I saw Mallett only take 3 and 5 step drops and the ball was either thrown or checked down. I think when you have quick decision making and ball releases from QBs' the O-line's performance vastly improves regardless of personnel. I don't have the metrics to say that this was the case, but it would be an interesting metric to study for the Ravens....

Last year under Kubiak (who everyone loved BTW) we finished 12th in total offense. This year we're at 14 with a game left to play.  Dropping only 2 spots considering ALL of the injuries we've dealt with is nothing short of amazing.  BTW, Denver under Kubiak/Dennison is 19th in total offense.

Very  important stat indeed!

This year has been a very difficult and challenging year for the Ravens franchise with so many season ending injuries and at key positions. The coaches as a whole have done the best they could the players have played with heart and no quitting in them. Most of the games were very close and some even had the refs making BAD-BAD-BAD mind blowing calls. I think just like every other off season we are going to see changes it happens every year in the NFL but I think the Ravens franchise is blessed because we have got to see a lot of talented guys play in real games with real meaning not some (pre-season) game and next year Harbaugh and his coaches along with Oz can make some real educated guesses on who to keep around and who to let move on. Marc Trestman has done a good job and most of the key players sent to IR are on the offensive side of the ball. It has not always been pretty or easy to stomach but the Ravens never stopped playing. Just take a few minutes and think about some of the players who we got to see and normally we would not have till next pre-season. Young guys that Oz brought in to fill the roster and Harbaugh and his staff let compete. Some of these young men are going to be on the team next year and I believe have larger roles to fill. WE ARE BLESSED and we got to SWEEP the Steelers.

For feeding thought or fought. Flacco had a "once upon a midnight dreary" season. I never had, all mounting injuries combined, confidence in his reaching the receivers. He hit the other team once to often. Mallet, one game, I saw, pretty much, direct hits. The pass to Matthews was a gem you expect from Brady, Manning of old or that Packer guy. Sunday will cause a stir if Mallet comes up good. Stir the pot, baby. It's the business of pro football.

I will give joe a pass this year. For three reasons 1. The o line didn't get it done no protection caused half joes interceptions also no running lanes and you know was the reason for the injury. 2. Every week he had a different receiving core couldn't get a feel for them. Every time he would start hitting his guys bam injured. 3. Every time he learns a system next year it changes.

how are people giving joe a pass on the receiving core? for the most part till smith sr went down it was the same 1 and 2 receiver with a rotation on the 3rd first. Second how many times was he sacked because he held on to the ball for far to long? look at mallet 3 or 5 step drops ball was released on time and on target. didnt throw a pick and was confident in his receivers. who he only has only met about 2 weeks ago. This is the NFL look at the rotation of OC and DC seattle has had since their first superbowl and they are still clicking. This forum is a bunch of excuses. I agree that he hasnt had stability but we paid him how much? come on joe get the job done. because backups are doing more with less.

Like I been saying Marc record in Chicago was 8-8 in 2013, 5-11 in 2014, maybe 6-10 at best this year. Sure another year he might get back to 8-8. Stop with the injury crap. Suggs was the only good player Ravens lost before the season was over and by the time SSS got hurt the season was already over.

Injuries? Then explain the secondary this year. Both your darlings Webb and Smith have played about every game and were 18th just above CLEAVLAND. "But there was no pass rush!" SO Ravens went in with two 30 pass rushers and no good backups. BRILLIANT.

Would Joe have won Sunday and "Whom" would Trestman offense work better with Joe or Ryan?! I'm sorry I like Joe but I don't think he would have won Sunday and is why I knew it will be a QB controversy on the horizon! The Ravens organization is the definition of "RELENTLESS" and it showed Sunday and I know Triple " S " will be back now!

Joe's never played well against Pittsburgh and can't beat Ben so yea I agree with you.

I cannot for the life of me see how "FANS" are calling for Mallett over Flacco based on one game. Yes it was a huge game but seriously you people honestly believe that Mallett offers the Ravens better opportunity than Flacco?

Yea but the trolling is working on me, I have to say something lol. Seriously if Joe got that much time he would of torched them, but something tells me Pittsburgh would have blitzed him more as he is more of a threat than Mallet for obvious reasons.

The fact that this is being entertained is embarrassing, we really think Flacco isn't capable of 274 yards and 1TD against the 31st pass ranked defense?

Balfan, it's still the run system we had in 2014! I'm afraid that Trestman would "improved" us into the mediocrity that has hamstrung Chicago for the years of his tenure! <_<

Alas, he's here now //sigh// and he may end up doing more harm than good as he "tinkers" away our proven zone-stretch run scheme (of kubiak's) for his scheme! We'll have to see what the future holds but I wish we'd have gone 'in-house' and developed a young Raven Oh Coordinator based upon our 2014 prowess and Kubiak's Playbook!

Just another example of Harb's lack of imagination in our coaching ranks!  :oldwiseman:

Yes, I get that it is the still the run system we had in 2014! Perhaps that's why I said I'm interested in seeing him put his stamp on things!

It never ceases to amaze me at how people use his poor performance as a HC as an indictment on his ability to be an OC! I would be very mad if we hired him as our HC (but of course, for you, anyone is better than Harbaugh) - I'm perfectly happy to see him as our OC!

As far as this "in-house" promotion goes ... Any names you'd like to put forward, or is that just a nebulous suggestion with no concrete option? !

(did I use enough exclamation points? :D )

We averaged 5.6 points per game MORE with Flacco than since he went down, and that's taking into account Schaub's one big game. I think Flacco's job is safe.

This wasn't Flacco's best season for many reasons and excuses. I remember that, repeatedly, Flacco took responsibility after games for making stupid decisions. Do I think that Mallett will take over the starting QB in place of Flacco? Of course not. But Flacco needs to correct his thought process and his flawed technique of throwing off his back foot. Do I think he will? Yes. But I am glad that Mr. Mallett is here.

That may be true, but it doesn't take into account the personnel each QB has/had around him. So, it's not a good argument.

There is nothing wrong with some stiff QB competition in camp and preseason. It will be good for Flacco and only improve his chances at excellence. Together with our O-line (KO, Jensen/Urschel, Zuttah, Yanda and Wagner), a 2nd year under Trestman, SSS back from retirement plans, and Forsett running like a madman, things will improve tremendously. What optimism, huh? Hey! It's New Years and time to hope.

Eisenberg of course you would say give Marc another year, at no point do I believe nor anyone else that you would do a write up titled Fire Marc trestman. Cam Cameron had many years of brutal play calling and no one ever wrote fire cam even though 99% of the fans chanted it daily.

I bet you also believe that Dean Pees deserves a few more years right?

Keep towing the company line

Flacco put up 30 at home vs Cleveland and San Diego without Smith and threw 3 TDs vs Jax. Not to mention Smith dropped 4 TDs this year.

If it's this bad now just imagine if we beat Cincinnati and Mallet plays decent.

it's not the offense i am worried about. it's the defense. unless the defense can leave the egos and start playing like a unit next year may be another punch in the jaw.

School is still out on Trestman. It would be unfair to judge his first season giving what has transpired with the offense. He has got to stop calling passing plays of less than what is needed on third down. We need 8 yards and we throw a 3 yard pass. It doesn't freakin work so throw the damn ball to the first down marker or beyond. The other problem is an age old Ravens problem. They have no ability to get first downs on third and one and fourth and one. They desparately need a scheme for it. Failing time and time again on short yardage situartions is a killer.

Say what you want about Trestman, I like the guy a lot. My only criticism is that the strength of our line is run blocking, therefore we should have ran the ball more, but the scoreboard situation makes sense. I mean come on people, in a lot of our games we simply lost because of a ton of turnovers and a lack of forcing them. The KC game was a perfect example. Some of the shotgun draw plays were predictable early in the season, yet since then, I have been blown away by his ability to ensure we didn't absolutely tank. I hope he gets a redemption season in 2016.

I am excited to see how he can do with a more experienced and talented arsenal next year. While I think the focal point of the draft should be to improve on defense, I really hope SSS comes back, Perriman is a force to be reckoned with, we keep Aiken going, Matthews develops here to his potential and so does our TEs, maybe even a return of Pitta. I also am kind of hoping we get another savvy vet to help with consistency. 2016 we are ready for you

Pittsburgh is almost dead last in defense in passing yards allowed...Cincy is 20th and has an injured backup playing...I expect to beat Cincy this week if we can hit AJ McCarron a few times early, but that doesn't give you a real measure of how good Mallett is if he wins against a bad pass D and an injured and less experienced backup

Trestman's offense was ranked 11th before Flacco went down, Kubiak's last year was ranked 12th. Kubiak had our starting WRs, and Trestman has been working with 3rd stringers at every skill position. I don't see how he's doing more harm than good. The offense has overachieved considering all the injuries. He's had success as an OC in the past, and if the offense can rank in the top half of the league with a bunch of backups, then why shouldn't we believe that this offense could be one of the best in the league when we get healthy?

Yea I agree with you, I'm not sure it would stop some people from getting carried away though. I definetely want to win, we're at risk of having the all time series be tied at 20-20 if we lose, I'm still mad we gave up the sweep in 2012 though I totally understand. I know everyone hates Pittsburgh the most and rightfully so but I live here (Cincinnati) and it would be nice to reverse recent history. Still love that we have won 8 of the last 11 vs Pitt though.
