With today Jimmy showing to be back into top form and Webb and Wright playing better and Will Davis coming back do we still try to get a CB early or address pass rush or another need

All three of those players have never played a full season. We need to add a corner.

Yeah we need to add a guy regardless.  Even if Jimmy rebounds after a tough year, the future is still bleak.  We don't exactly have a long term option opposite Jimmy.  As Grim said, countless years of not addressing the position has put us in this situation.

Webb, Jimmy or Davis have all been injury prone. Jimmy isn't back to top form. Aside from the balls he got his hands on he still let guys open and had PI's. We're not sure what he'll be next year. Webb is 30 and expensive. Wright has been good, but not really someone I would want to rely on as a starter.

We don't need a repeat of last season when we started the season with 4 CB's. You have to think Ozzie has learned from that. We need more depth.

Along with depth, I think we need a future option there.  We've done well by picking up guys like Will Davis (albeit a short sample size) and Shareece Wright who both played well this year in their time on the field, but I don't think anyone is mistaking them for high caliber starting options.  If what they showed this year is any indication, they might both be serviceable #3/4 types.  What we're really missing is that long term option opposite Jimmy.  I think we've always wanted that to be a Webb/Jimmy combo but it's not like we can rely on either to stay on the field.

In response to the posts above, getting a high caliber CB would allow us to move Webb to FS/Slot CB where he belongs which I think would really help him and the secondary overall.

If Webb is even here.  That's another one of the shoulder shrugs right now.

I don't know if we should even keep Webb. He hasn't done much as a FS. Sure, he's "learning" the position but he's a veteran and he's been here years now. I think he could be gone to save some cap cash, especially if we draft a safety.

Yeah, I don't know if he'll be back. If we decide to keep him which is a tough choice to make, then I think it help us putting him in that role, but like you said we don't know if he'll be here. The outlook at CB just seems so bleak that if Hargreaves is there you might just have to take him.

I think he may be expendable. I think it's safe to say either him or Lewis or both are gone next year, although I personally think one of them could stick around. His versatility as a PR & as a slot CB & a safety could help him stick around, while Arrington and Lewis could be cut to save the cap.

I see Arrington as a guy we would cut as soon as the season ends while we consider whether or not Webb sticks around. Lewis is a guy who I believe will be a 53 man roster cut or keep. He's a cheap option and we don't have the money to poney up for a top FA FS and I don't know if we will sign one. I think we draft one and allow the rookie, Lewis, and Brooks duel it out for the starting spot.

Elam, Brooks, Hill, and Lewis are under contract next year and Elam is in his final year. Trawick is an RFA who is a vital component of our ST. Lewis has shown he can play SS, so he could stick around, but Elam has also shown the same, so I don't know. Both have made major mistakes in big moments, too. We'll see where it goes, but Lewis saves us nearly $1M so it's not substantial, you're right. Arrington saves us a little over $1M if cut. Honestly, I see much of the same player in Webb and Arrington, although Webb is simply better at it if healthy. We tried to use Arrington like we are using Webb but he didn't make the cut. I think we also want to use Brooks in the same way.

I agree that I believe we will draft a safety.

I think it will be more clear in training camp. I just don't see us cutting Lewis outright without a replacement. He has not been good but we can do worse honestly if we just cut him and don't replace him. I don't see the same excuse with Arrington who has been shoved out by both Shareece Wright and Will Davis.

Harbaugh seems to love the guy and thinks he just haven't been out in the right position. I think we'll keep him and cut Arrington.

Yeah, I agree. That seems to be the likeliest outcome from what I see. Arrington seems all but gone. He rarely gets reps with the defense and when he does he tends to allow a completion even when he's in the slot. He hasn't panned out for us like I guess we hoped he would. Webb is essentially a better version of him and what we wanted to do with him. We likely keep Webb for the $2.5M difference ($3.5 minus the amount saved after cutting Arrington) or whatever it is between keeping him over Arrington.

I do think Webb could be cut due to his reliability more than anything, but that's something else altogether.

Here is the break down I think Webb's dead money keeps him safe and he is plaing better than Arrington and as a safety I think he is out performing Lewis. Also Elam is in the lat year of his rookie deal so I would gamble on 1 more year and hope that he gets it like they were saying during the offseason I think it's work the gamble.

Webb 6 mil dead money 3.5 mil savings

Arrington 1.33 mil dead money 1.43 mil savings

Elam 813k dead money 1.32 mil savings

Lewis 913k dead money 933k savings.

Jimmy did in 2013 and looks like he will this season

Artie Burns out of Miami just declared for the draft. Boundary corner who's a little stiff, but for anyone paying attention to the Miami program (I've brought this up many times before), he pretty much received zero coaching, so he's very raw. Is a track guy, so I expect him to run well at the combine. Excellent size for a corner at 6'0'' 195 lbs. Can also play safety if need be. Can get sloppy with his technique, but again, I blame the coaching staff at Miami. I would think rounds 2-3 would be the right range for him. Round 2 if he runs well at the combine.

As far as corners who can cover guys in the slot, Corn Elder, another Miami corner may be an option. He hasn't declared yet, but if he does, I think he will be fantastic in the league. Fast and very fluid. Can return punts and kicks, too.
