Ryan Mallett is the most confident QB that has ever lined up for the Ravens!

I guarantee you the front office and coaches are thinking about more than just today. Why can't that be discussed?

Of course they are but that is not what I was speaking of.

My post was in reference to the OP taking a not so subtle jab at Flacco via Mallett's performance today.

I laughed at the move initially, but the FO making the move, proved to me, they wanted this game.  Happy they were rewarded.  He played his butt off.

Yep! I was a little surprised too but coaches watched him in practice and decided he gave the team the best chance to win. Today they were right!

Truthfully Mallett has been a revelation. His poise, confidence and demeanor on the field are that of a leader. He commands the huddle and is just vocal enough to get his guys motivated! I love the move by the Ravens to bring him on. Hopefully, Joe recovers in time for the start of next season. But, in the event he doesn't I feel very comfortable in Mallett's ability to run the show without any tangible drop off in production. However, when it comes to playoffs, Joe has a track record that is unbeatable. So, we want him back healthy and not rush his rehab even if it means he misses a few games.

Some people can't just appreciate a nice win without trolling. Yes, Mallet played well today. Yes, he looks like the backup of the future. No, he is not better than Joe because of one game. Yes, anyone who thinks this should root for another team. Good lord.

Exactly!

And he also hit more dudes in stride today than I've seen in a while. The one to Givens for 40 yards and then also the Butler one for 20 were absolutely beautiful throws. Not crowning him, but liked what I saw.

I thought he did very well especially when he's only been here 12 days. Hope it continues and isn't a fluke thing because it would be nice to know we could win a few games if needed should Flacco get hurt.

Pass to Givens was a definitely a thing of beauty.

Why would they trade him? His cap hit next season is $1.5M. That's a steal for a QB.

Because someone might be willing to pony-up a much needed draft pick? lol

Mallett balled out today. Yes he missed a few throws, but he also threw some beautiful passes, and most of all, no turnovers!

He took what the defense gave him! I thought the stage would be too big for him in this rivalry, his 1st start as a Raven, but he showed poise every time Pittsburgh was threatening to score! This win is the best xmas gift ever! The Chiefs made the playoffs, now I hope the Jets finish the job next week, to knock the Squeelers out the playoffs! Go Ravens

I wouldn't go nearly as far as to say he played as well as Flacco, but he showed that if the Ravens need to use their backups again, he could win a game

That's what is important. This thread is treading on something ridiculous; it may be natural to compare him to the incumbent starter, but it is completely unfair to Mallet to even mention him in the same breath as Flacco. He isn't, and never will be Flacco. But let him be Mallet. As we saw today, that could be all we need him to be. I liked signing him, despite his baggage. If he gets his head right, he can be a very valuable asset to us.

yup. the vast majority of posters on this board are completely knee jerk to every scenario and its borderline insanity and absurdity.

"fire john harbaugh"

"ryan mallett is our savior"

"steve buscemi is paying for this season out of his pocket"

He has baggage and this was his best pro game ever...vs one of the worst defense in NFL.   There is a reason why Steelers needs to have 3 WRs go +1000yards this season.

Steelers stopped Mallett easy @ 4th quarter, but both Steelers receivers screwed up(i believe Bryant and Wheaton dropped a perfect pass on end zone).

I still dont like the idea of keeping Mallett.   He needs to ball out and put some major points vs Bengals, else he hasnt earned anything from me to consider him a keeper for next season.

Compared to Schaub? Clausen? i would rather have Mallet after what he showed today, in a big rivilary game he plays the best of his career and thats a bad thing?  This wouldnt even have been a close game if it werent for all those PI calls that basically led to two TDs.  In no way am i agreeing with the title of this thread, but i would much rather have him than Schaub or Clausen thats for sure....

His throw to givens down the left sideline splitting 3 defenders was possibly, of memory, the best throw by any qb all year. Thought it was perfect.

On a side note, Matthews has been a great pick up, very good catch for his td.

If he beats Cincinnati I've got a feeling the joe haters will start to flock. In all seriousness though- and I'm not just saying this because he won and had a good game- mallet looks like he has genuinely learned his lesson. I really liked his post game presser and it gave me more insight to the type of person he is. I think he was just tired of being jerked around by Houston and just wanted to be treated with respect. He seems like a cool guy and I'm glad he's here. I think he's probably relieved to land in such a stand up organization. Was smart of Ozzie to lick him up for next year and guarantee him nothing. That way if he screwed up he's gone- and if he does well ( which so far he is) he won't play himself out of Baltimore for more money. Win- win for us. Glad he's a raven and I'm happy for the kid to get the opportunity to redeem himself. Baltimore is the land of successful second chances. When you respect your coaches and team you want to be on your best behavior and not let them down. Hence why you don't hear about too many players screwing up off the feild on Green Bay- New England - Pittsburgh - etc. it happens , just not as frequently.

dude played great given the circumstances and not to mention what he had to work with.

interesting that so many suddenly jump on the bandwagon though.

gonna be even more interesting to see how fast most will jump off lol

I liked him over Clausen, just didn't understand why they waited so long to get him. He had been available for a while.  And they'll jump off faster than a hop scotch square.  I'm just happy that we might have find a capable back up and someone who might be able to to control games, if Joe isn't able to come right back next season.  Weird that this is his best game as a pro, considering the weapons he had to work with in Houston.

probably had to make sure he got his head straight is what im thinking.

meh  houston does not have any weapons outside of hopkins though.

he is basically the offense lol

I would be curious to see how well the Ravens offense would have done without the ridiculous penalties stopping or continuing drives/Steelers drives

BLOW OUT.   2 PIs put them on the 1 yard line.

Ryan looked good and showed poise, but here's the rub. There really was no pressure on him to perform. In reality the game meant nothing to our season(other than potentially ruining the squealers season!  yeah!) and no one would have blamed him had he looked like pooh.  After all he had only been in town for 10 days or so.

Mallett looks like a great fit as the Ravens back up QB. But let's not get carried away!    lol

He had something to play for, this game was a tryout for next season and it was for his pride. If he laid an egg he'd probably be out of the league. He had pressure.

eh, yes it was a tryout.  But as I said no one would have held him accountable given the short time he had been here.

I think anyone and everyone knows/knew he has talent and he probably would have been the choice either way, as long as he shows he has taken care of the other "issues".

when your career is on the line and everyone is watching your every move from playing QB  to your behaviour when things dont go as you want , you can safely bet there is pressure.

I think he's potentially won the back-up QB position for next year, personally. I like him better than the albatross Matt "Pick 6" Schaub.

I think there is little doubt Schaub is done in Baltimore if not the NFL.

More confident than making an audible out of a run play on 4th and 1 in the 4th quarter of the SUPER BOWL after giving up a 22 point lead? How short are our memories!

Mallet losing his job in Houston and then no team wanting him for awhile might have lit a fire in him. Sometimes players need a slap in the face like that to straighten out and finally play up to their potential. If he can keep  his head on straight, he'll be a great long term backup to Flacco.
