New Defense Next Year

Here's a fun fact that I found comical: according to NFL.com, here's where we are in the rankings of defensive passing yards in comparison to the rest of the AFC North.

Browns: 252.9 (22nd)

Steelers: 279.1 (31st)

Lol. Go figure, right?

the Steelers and Bengals have played with a lead for many more snaps than us I would imagine. Also penalty yardage is likely a big factor when considering how small a difference between the raw numbers, one unnecessary roughness call means 15 yards given up on defense goes unaccounted for, I'd imagine were worse off than them I that regard as well Edited by JoeyFlex5

Oh for sure. Maybe it's just me, I think they should account defensive penalties into the yardage numbers. I just found it funny that we had the "best" statistical passing defense as of right now.

I don't really see a point in the switch. Our rotation in our front 3 is the best part of our D. The problem with our defense is the secondary. Fix that issue before reshuffling the front 7 b.c if we switched to a 4-3 we would be forced to cut some good DLineman.
The thing is here we would have an extra D lineman on the field. We could have Williams Jernigan and Davis all on the field with Urban Smith KLM or Guy and with a healthy Suggs/ Dumervil to have rushing isn't that bad an idea. It would also get Arthur Brown on he field to see what we have

If the offense keeps scoring points and playing the same balanced game then you can not lose a lead!! Now if the offense plays conservative and keeps kicking the ball back to the opposing offense then it is giving them opportunity and daring them to take the lead. Keep the playcalling aggressive and balanced. Put some pressure on the opposing teams defense and out of the hands of the opposing offense. Which is why keeping the best left guard in the league is a priority!! As well as drafting a franchise left tackle then a legit receiver. Keep the offense balanced with run and throw and keep the opposing defense tired and off balance with the dominating mauling OLine fueling the run game and prolific efficient throws. The defense can not give up a lead when the ravens score again and keep the opposing offense on the sideline.
Passing has always be Trestman he doesn't do balanced offenses think back early 2000 Raiders the Bears the last few years very pass heavy. Plus I like KO unless he's at LT we probably are not going to pay him Urschel I believe he will be a very solid Guard. The cap will prevent us from paying 2 Guards big money think back when Yanda got his first contract we let Ben Grubb walk who was a top 5 Guard

I just want a defense that is respectable. Me personally, I think the time is now to build an elite offense. We have a receiving threat in Buck Allen out the back field, a legit #3 in Kamar Aiken, a first round rookie who can be a deep threat in Perriman, and an OL that when healthy, can play at a high level.

I feel like with a proper run game and another WR, we can make some noise offensively. I think we really need the guys healthy in order to do that. I'm a big fan of getting a WR in the 2nd round, I like some of the guys there. Getting Tunsil(If possible) and Boyd or Thomas would make me a really happy fan.

I prefer the elite offense/good defense mantra, if you can hold opponents to FGs and make stops, then you will win games. I think a good defense will hold teams below the 28 point mark, if we can do that, we should be able to bounce back in 2016 with an elite offense.

I believe the 2nd-3rd round WRs are a good spot several options Boyd Thomas Doctson Shepard Miller Carroo and Robinson

If you went a flexible, fast defense then the best option would be to run a one-gap 3-4, and replace one of the ILBs with a linebacker/safety hybrid to cover TEs and RBs. Basically, copy the Cardinals' defense.

In that case Ramsey is who we would want

Urban hasn't shown anything? He's been a huge impact ever since he's came back. Brandon Williams is a 3-4 nose tackle. He would not be nearly as effective in a 4-3 and he has been the anchor of the defense. Why take your best player and put him in a system that doesn't fit him. Carl Davis and Jernigan are really the only 4-3 defensive tackles we have. Guy, Urban, and Williams are all 3-4 guys. Also we don't have the linebackers. All of our outside backers right now would switch to ends. Then your left with a weak spot and absolutely no depth.

I dont hate the idea of a switch do a 4-3, but with the personnel we have its not like we could make a smooth transition. I agree a 4-3 is better to keep up with the faster pace and would probably be more effective in this day and age, but we aren't built for it right now.

Personally Brandon Williams and Sam Adams have a lot of similarities build and style of play I believe it would work plus if you double Williams Jernigan/Davis would be singled up and both those guys are much more an athlete than Siragusa was would like to see how it would work

Not to play that role. Ramsey is a roaming FS that uses instincts, speed and a solid technique. Hill would be better at that assignment. But you could run a 4-3 single high and leave Ramsey back as the lone "safety" and bring Hill up to the line to cover the TE.

Za'Darius Smith played well this game and throughout the year. You look for a player to get better and he has. I am really optimistic about his future. I wouldn't count on him alone, but he'll be a nice piece with a lot of development from this year upon which he can build.

What are the thoughts on shareece wright.  Is he a FA next year.  I like hows hes played after the 49ers game.  Would it be worth bringing him back?

This. I'm looking to see the progression of not only Urban, but Carl Davis as well.

I wouldn't mind him coming back. Definitely has been playing better since his debacle @ SF. If anything, he'd be good depth.

Just a note. Yesterday we used a 4 man frint almost exclusively. And ZSmith showed what he can do as a 4-3 DE. Just saying.

Yes, that's called a "nickel defense." And yes, even 3-4 teams tend to run the nickel with the four man front. Typically, they pull the nose out and put in the fifth DB.

I saw Jernigan playing the DT position when we were in the 4-man nickel set yesterday. He was definitely effective there in his role.

Edit: I hate auto-correct. Some of these words are strange. Not sure from where they come.

Yeah, Jernigan's been turning up the heat in nickel situations. He's really, really good when he has the chance to just penetrate. He's also getting doubled a ton. Jernigan's having a hell of an influence.

Sigh, its still a 4 man front utilizing the exact players weve been talking aboit for a 4-3. And what happens? We stuff the hottest offense in the league. This isnt rocket science. Dont know why youre makong this difficult. Are you related to Peas?

It's not rocket science. You're the one that can't seem to grasp that 4-3 and 3-4 are really just alignments and that defensive philosophy has a bigger influence on style of play and personnel types.

We've been running four man front nickel packages since forever. Every team in the NFL uses four man front nickel packages. Why is it oh so important we ran them a lot against the Steelers? We've been blown out using four man front nickel packages too. "This isn't rocket science."

I will be more than happy to play in the place of Kendrick Lewis.

I'm sure most of you will trust me when I say: You don't have to see me play to be be on board with that

No it all factors in together. Jeez we both played ball. Lets crayola style this. We, and most of the league play a ton of nickle just because of most offenses running 3wr sets right, you have trip sets, 2 over 1, etc.... We can agree on this right?

So..... Why would you want your "base" to be a 3 man front when your bringing Suggs to stick his hand in the dirt outside the tackle in a 7tech spot anyway? Why not just go ahead and A:get a guy who runs a Tampa2 very well(Which as you know is a quick and easy player change to the nickle, rather than half the guys running off and 4 new players running on) and keep the flow of the D.

Bottom line. Pees doesnt know how to use the nickle, or anything else. Go back to his NE days. He ran a nickle with a 3 man front. Watch it. Very rarely did they use a 4 man front. Hes not comfortable with it. Maybe he cant use stunts correctly, or maybe it was just he had Willfork and didnt wanna pull him out, Im not in his mind bro. Im just saying if you run a 4 man front out of a nickle 46% of the time, why not keep that same 4 man front the other half the time? And hence get a guy whos ya know, great at that style.

An NFL defensive coordinator with a Super Bowl ring and a top ten defense doesn't know how to use the nickel defense? Is that what you're telling me? Because that is one of the most inane, ridiculous, nonsensical, baseless, idiotic, asinine comments I've ever read on this message board. With that, I am no longer interested in this discussion.

Did you mean youre "no longer" interested? Just kidding. But YES thats what Im saying. Guys are comfortable with what they know. Thats why you have 3-4 guys and 4-3 guys. Not just players, but coaches also. What do you do for a living? Nm thats personal. But say you did one thing your whole life, than suddenly you gotta do it different.

And dont trump out we have a top 10 D. Yards per game are a pile of poo. POINTS matter and TURNOVERS. Yards dont win or lose games. Thats a bs argument. Cmon bro youre better than that. Top 10 D. Lmao. As for a ring, hmmmm how come when he had Brady on O he couldnt get one? But he comes here with 3 HOFers on his D and gets one, even though he almost blew it even with that many all stars.

Been thinking about this pretty much all season.  I actually think it's quite doable all with the addition of a few players.  I think it's definitely possible that Mosely could play an Outside Linebacker (strong side) role, and I think 1 of either Orr or Arthur Brown would play weakside.  If not, finding a weakside linebacker is probably the the easiest to find in the draft.

I think at this point in his career, Suggs might actually be better off in a 4-3 role because his two strong-suits are rushing the passer and stopping the run... we haven't seen him drop into coverage much at all in the last few years.  It could also mean slightly less double teams for Suggs having 1 extra man on the line.  Dumervil has already played in a 4-3 in his career so I don't think that's really a question.

If Bosa is the best player available when we're on the board, we take him and start the switch to a 4-3.

Bosa can drop into coverage too every now and then so he could fit he's smart in not over pursuing the backside as an edge setter... I believe he could fit into this system and philosophy very well if we decide to keep it in the off season... I know we have already ran some 4-3 with cj Daryl and Zach and we look comfortable and we have also lined as you said cj at the Sam side and has been productive. So I see where your going with the idea.

Here's a fun fact that I found comical: according to NFL.com, here's where we are in the rankings of defensive passing yards in comparison to the rest of the AFC North.

Lol. Go figure, right?

I only look at yard stats just to feel a sense of pride in the way our defense plays... I hardly ever go on nfl.com to look up useful info... Because its filled with fantasy guys who think they know everything... They talk about us having the worst pass defense in the league and that is just falsified. First of all i doubt they know who shareece wright k lew or will hill do. I think all they know about is jimmy and lardarius off name and they say guys like marcus peters is a lockdown corner... Just a bunch of guys who never played the game looking off stats. Thats what all the big networks do.

Yes, that's called a "nickel defense." And yes, even 3-4 teams tend to run the nickel with the four man front. Typically, they pull the nose out and put in the fifth DB.

And sometimes we will keep b will in our 4-3 defense in pass rush situations in the middle and he is always clogging 2 guys thats what gave guys like timmy and zadarius like 3 or 4 sacks last game bedause they get 1 on 1s all the time when b wills in

He doesn't let our players play... THATS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH DEAN PEES. You can talk ALL you want about what he's accomplished but ever since he got here all he does is say don't get beat deep... So he curls up in his little shell calls cover 3 off no matter if its third or 4th and one and keeps our darn defense on the field... I remember last weeks wired that made the whole point of why we hate dean... Zach orr was covering someone in zone and the ball came to his man which he was two yards away from... He said he did not want to pick it off because he did not want to get beat.... THAT IS WHY WE ARE STILL ON THE FIELD the only players who ever want to grab a dang ball is jimmy and lardarius and jimmy just can't catch so that's one out of the two gone and the only reason why Daryl ever catches anything is when they throw it right too him as if he was the receiver.

Well go figure. We actually have the LEAST amount of defensive penalty yards (that is, if I'm reading that right).

a coach telling his players dont get beat deep seems like a very good thing to me.

im quite sure every DC in the league put emphasis on that lol.

he's voicing his displeasure with how different pees is from Rex and Pagano. Those guys would want you to jump those routes, ESPECIALLY Rex because they are dialing up pressures that force the qb to get rid of it quick. Pees has our guys playing back and form tackling, a game of discipline. In theory neither of those are wrong. One should give up more field goals ,the other should five up more touchdowns.

its easy to tell players to jump routes when you have the greatest safety ever playing centre field.

its borderline insane if you tell your players to that when you have with all due respect kendrick lewis there or a not that range having will hill.

i dont think some of you guys understand how talents like ed and reed can dictate what you can do and not having guys like that can limit you.

you need players with a high football IQ to do certain things.
