[News] Daniel Brown Out To Prove He Can Make It As An NFL Wide Receiver

40 posts in this topic

Its not all about exposure.  When you play at a small school you are playing against lesser competition which makes the transition to the nil that much more difficult.  The coaches are also not as good in smaller schools so most of these guys come out pretty raw.  I see people saying that Brown should have been on the team since day one, but I disagree. DB came into the league extremely raw and needed to perfect his technique before he came up.  If you knew what to look for you would see that his rout running is still a bit of a work in progress.  The other hurdle that he has to overcome is his limited athletic ability.  Someone commented earlier that Brown reminded him of Gilmore.  I agree, and really thats not a complement. If Gilmore were a move tight end then it would be, but he is an inline guy.  They do have similar athletic ability and are not very smooth in and out of breaks.  That being said, I like DB, he just has a lot of hurdles to overcome, to make next years squad.  I would like to see him used more in redzone  situations.  His height and his hands are really his strengths.  I say throw it up to him a few time and let him win that jump ball.

Pretty much agree with your elaboration on the small school issues which can crop up. To clarify, I did not say or imply that it was ALL about exposure, but that it is 1 valid additional hurdle coming from a small school, common throughout the NFL. There can be a presumption among NFL scouts and coaches that since the competition level is generally not as good at smaller schools, that the individual players may be of lesser capability, which is certainly not always the case. It is also possibly true.for Daniel to have needed more coaching/development time on the practice squad. Neither you nor I are at practice to make a definitive statement of fact whether this is true, but it is a logical likelihood that he needed a bit more time and coaching than perhaps some others to maximize readiness. In any event, I like the kid. Daniel's potential has been evident enough to be worth giving him some opportunities since the pre-season, he seems to get open and his hands seem pretty good. I really hope Daniel keeps progressing and earns a spot for himself on the team next  year.

I've been rooting for this kid since I saw him in the pre-season. When I found out he was a JMU guy, it made me like him and want him to be a contributor on this team even more. I think he can be a major player in our offense this year and moving forward. Here's to hoping he shows it and the coaches are smart enough to see it. Go, go Brown.

This guy has an up hill battle... he has 3 more games to prove that he produce... Plus you have Waller who is a bit more athletic than he is... Camp who shown he can make plays... then Perriman who will get every opportunity to prove himself because he's the first rounder... then there is the outside chance that SSS comes back (I doubt he will but fingers crossed)... I do believe Marlon won't be here next season (he really didn't take advantage of his opportunity this season at all) then there is JB who has quietly been improving from week to week... and not to mention if they draft another WR in next year's draft...

I hope our coaches don't ruin him like they did Marlon. Our young receivers seem to be able to get open more right after they get out of college till our receiver coach takes whatever they had going for them, out of them and replaces it with stupid stuff.

baltimoreravens.com already hyping up a practice squad player - kind of similar to what they were doing this past Summer saying that the younger receivers (e.g. Marlon, Aiken, etc..) were ready to take over for Torrey and Jacoby- lol... i wish this young man success, but I'm not drinking the purple kool-aid that these reporters are drowning in. I wish there'd be truthful articles about our past five drafts to see how they've compared with other teams, etc... injuries are just excuses.. good coaches make players regardless

I'm with Sami on this one.
I think it may be time to start mixing things up in the coaching department.
It seams to me we have more problems with position groups across the board than with individual players. This suggests coaching shortcomings, to me.
