A bit less rough, still too early 2016 Mock Draft V2.0

40 posts in this topic

Round 1: Vernon Hargreaves III / CB / Florida / 5'11” / 192lbs

Far and away the best corner in the draft and should be ready to go day 1 to push Webb inside to the slot. We all know about this guy. Tunsil will be long gone before we pick and I don't think Stanley is worth a top 5 pick, just my opinion. If we trade back (which I think could be our best option depending) then Stanley could be possibility, but as it stands I don't think we should take him top 5 over Hargreaves.

Round 2: Jerald Hawkins / OT / LSU / 6'6” / 305lbs

Not a finished product at LT but that's pretty much what we are looking for in a LT prospect since we are stuck with Monroe for another year or two. I don't know if we are intending to keep KO at LT or not, I don't think we are long term, if we re-sign him this offseason then I suspect he'll be back at LG with Monroe at LT. Grabbing a guy like Hawkins can give us a serviceable backup if Monroe goes down again next season because Hurst has taken a step back this year. Hawkins needs work in the run game but he has good footwork and stays relatively low when blocking. With a year or two of polishing he can be a very good starting LT for the future.

Round 3: Sterling Shepard / WR / Oklahoma / 5'10” / 190lbs

Very talented receiver that runs great routes and has great hands. Very productive at Oklahoma and would provide a good complimentary piece alongside Perriman. Has good straight line speed and quickness to get separation from corners and has good body control to make awkward catches. This year he's caught 79 passes for 1201 yards and 11 TDs.

Round 4: Josh Forrest / ILB / Kentucky / 6'3” / 255lbs

Orr has really proven himself this year as a contributor on defense, but I'm sorry to say that Arthur Brown is done in Baltimore, lots of people here wanted us to draft him (including myself) but he just hasn't panned out, its time to draft a replacement. Forrest is a big linebacker (with a frame that could take even more) but still possesses good speed. He's a natural in coverage, which isn't surprising considering he joined the Wildcats as a wide receiver in 2011, but still has some skill in run D. He isn't a finished product and needs some work shedding blocks and doesn't hit with too much authority, he could use a year to learn in a limited role behind Daryl, also could take over Brown's ST role. He has flashes of greatness (15 tackles, 1 sack, 3 PDs and 1 int against Louisiana Lafayette) but needs better consistency. We'll get to see him play at the Senior Bowl. This year he totaled 93 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 5 pass deflections and 2 interceptions.

Round 4: Jacoby Brissett / QB / NC State / 6'4” / 231lbs

This year we got a sobering reminder that Flacco is in fact mortal and could get hurt at any times, it's best to be really prepared it case it were to happen again. Brissett, in my opinion, is very similar to Big Ben, he's a very big guy and has a knack for escaping pressure. He's not the fastest guy but he can run if he needs to, and be very effective, but he definitely looks to pass first. He's got a big arm with nice accuracy and doesn't seem to make many mistakes, he will be a great backup behind Flacco. This year he completed 61.3% of his passes for 2448 yards, 19 TDs (+5 rushing TDs), and 4 interceptions.

Round 4 (Comp): Tyler Marz / OT / Wisconsin / 6'7” / 320lbs

Adding another OT with good upside for depth. He can also backup former badger Wagner on the right side. Coming from Wisconsin he is obviously an absolute mauler in the run game and can open up some nice holes for our runners, but needs work on pass blocking. I don't believe his first step is quick enough to make it on the left side, so I think his true value will be on the right.

Round 4 (Comp): Ronald Blair III / DE/OLB / Appalachian State / 6'4” / 275lbs

Quick off the snap and good at shedding blocks. Played all over the App State Dline (including DT) but I think he would be a DE or stand up for us and play a similar role to McPhee. I'm just going to provide a video with this one so you guys can see for yourselves, I really like this guy. This year he has 59 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 1 interception.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQApJa7eaqg

Round 5 (Comp): Ken Crawley / CB / Colorado / 6'1” / 185lbs

Crawley is a developmental piece at corner. He's got long arms and legs and great speed to recover. He has some problems, like: he doesn't get very low into his backpedal, but I don't think he has any problems that can't be fixed. He doesn't hit with a authority but tackles with good form and is a great open field tackler (which is fantastic for a later round guy, it gives him a good chance to stick on ST while he develops). If he bites on a move he has great speed to recover and does a solid job of using his long arms to his advantage. With some polishing Crawley could be a good corner in the NFL.

Round 6: ??????

Sorry to leave you hangin' here, but I haven't come up with anyone that I really like in the late rounds. I need to do some more looking. Here are some guys I considered:

Pete Robertson – OLB / Texas Tech – Had a break out year last year with 12 sacks but this year only totaled 5. Doesn't show much in the way of strength, he needs work but I don't know if he has the skill set to make it at the next level.

Jordan Williams – WR / Ball State – Reminds me of Aiken. He's a big guy at 6'2” 230lbs and uses it to drag defenders after the catch and make contested catches. Hands are not as good as you'd want with players like him who make a living with contested catches and I'm not sure if he can get separation in the NFL.

Malcolm Mitchell – WR / Georgia – I actually really like Mitchell, he was probably my top choice overall but I don't think we need to draft two receivers, we've got a roster of young guys and can pick up a FA (and, as I said earlier, I don't think SSS will retire). Mitchell is a high character guy with some potential to be a guy that sticks around in the NFL for a long time.

LaDarrell McNeil – FS / Tennessee – I think McNeil has some good potential in the NFL. Came into the year with a very serious neck injury but came back after a couple games and did well. Grabbed two picks and a couple passes broken up on the year.

Randall Jette – CB / Umass – Solid corner, haven't seen too much of him but from what I've seen he has a knack for causing turnovers. Although, I've also found articles that say he's taken a noticeable step back, that paired with his size (only 5'10”) he will probably go undrafted.

Tajae Sharpe – WR / Umass – Produced big time for the minutemen the past two years and has NFL size. I don't know if he'll be available in the 6th but stranger things have happened. And, again, I don't know if we should take two receivers.

A few OG/OC - I liked what I was seeing from Jensen in the preseason but now that he's being given a shot starting because of injuries I am disappointed.

Notes

**Comps: 4th for McPhee and Smith, 5th for Taylor

**I question whether we need to draft two WRs, here is my explanation: I don't think Steve Smith Sr. will retire after an injury, he's just not that kind of guy, Aiken has developed very well and has proven to be a good #3 in the NFL. Over the past couple weeks Butler has shown that he has some use on the roster. Brown needs to go, he has no place here, lots of injuries and he's taken multiple steps back from his rookie year. Givens is a toss up in my opinion but I think he sticks around as a deep threat, maybe with after a year with the team and Flacco he can contribute like the front office wanted when they traded for him. Also I believe we are probably going to bring in a free agent, not a big name but somebody to compete. Camp won't make it through to the active roster next year, maybe he'll be put on the practice squad but he simply can't stay healthy, you can be as good as ever but if you aren't on the field it means nothing. So I think we'll have SSS, Perriman, Aiken, Butler, Givens, and a FA come next season, adding one good receiver is enough in my opinion. I didn't count Clay because really he is only a return specialist.

**I don't try to predict trades, they are pretty much impossible to predict and I don't want my mock to rely on a certain trade that probably will not happen the way I would mock it.

I'm going to elevate the need of CB over FS in all honesty. We have something at FS with Webb, who has demonstrated he can play FS and at least we have Terrence Brooks there learning the position and showing flashes. We have absolutely nothing at CB. After Jimmy I don't know anyone who is guaranteed a spot on the roster. Getting Hargreaves would allow us to move Webb back at FS all while having a prospect who can start day one. \

I need to do some research on the other guys.

I'm not sure how respected Matt Miller is when it comes to scouting/ draft etc but last night he tweeted that the talk among scouts is that Hargreaves is actually closer to 5'9'' than the 5'11'' he is listed at

Obviously that doesn't change his last 3 years film, and perhaps it shouldn't affect his draft stock, but we all know measureables are more of a factor than they probably should be.

If he truly does measure 5'9'' at the combine (no way of falsifying it when you're standing there in your boxers) then surely he would fall down a few boards?

He'll fall down some boards but his tape speaks for itself. Everyone knows he's shorter than 5'11", I just put the listed up for each prospect, he should measure about 5'10" at the combine, I doubt he'll come up meaningfully shorter than that. Either way I'd still take him, as i said, his tape speaks for itself, a player is a player and HG3 is a heck of a player and I'd still take him top 3-5 no questions asked.

To play devils advocate, wouldnt ramsey still be enticing since he can play cb and fs?

I like the mock but I honestly think I'd prefer Ramsey over Vernon. I've kind of soured on VH3 since watching some more of his tape. Don't get me wrong I still think he is a good CB and I'd get him in the 7-10 range, but I prefer Ramsey for his size and versatility. He can play S, outside CB, and slot CB that's just too good to pass up

everyone thought Ogden would be the 1st or the 2nd pick in 96 draft.

ok, your point is? it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that nobody's position is set in stone, especially this far out. Just because somebody at the same position fell before doesn't mean it'll happen again, two LTs were taken 1 and 2 a couple years ago, and if that happens?

Being able to "play" at those positions means nothing, if he isn't as good as Hargreaves. Ramsey hasn't shown that he can play safety, in college the great majority of his safety reps were close to the LOS. He has never shown us that he has the range needed to play safety at an NFL level let alone a level worth s top 10 pick. At CB he's shown potential but has only had one season at that spot. His susceptibility to double moves is alarming. Edited by Cillmatic

I was thinking the same thing. In our range anything can happen.

and if that happens we grab bosa and Ozzie does a triple backflip.

half the boards would complain that bosa won't be good dropping into coverage lol

Or it was a reach lol

they would complain that cb is a bigger need and use passing yardage as an arguing point..

Or complain about passing on Jared Goff because Joe is an overpaid bum

If we do grab Bosa what would his role be.  Keep him inside or move him to OLB.  He was never really asked to drop back into coverage at Ohio St.

he doesn't need to drop back, a 3-4 olb who can do it all at a high level is rare. Suggs, mack, those guys are generational talents. Bosa is a game wrecker, he can crash his side on a regular basis. Let the pass rush make the coverage better, instead of using your rushers as extra coverage

Ramsey is a monster. I find it interesting that in a year where Tryann Mathieu has arguably been the DPOY that people are down on Ramsey because he's not "the best pure corner" in the class. To me Ramsey is a bigger game changer than VH3 because of his versatility and ability to do things like coming off the edge as a rusher, being physical at the point of attack in run support, having the awareness to rip the ball away from guys and create turnovers.

Not only that but Ramsey has charisma in spades, he brings some of that excitement and juice back to our defense. People want a vocal leader, Ramsey is that guy, he will break up a pass or hit you in the mouth and then get up and tell you about it. He will rally the entire defense at the end of the game, that to me is also what makes him a special player.

nobody judges him for not being the best pure corner, he doesn't even project to corner, he is judged because he can be a huge liability because he lacks range and is FAR too aggressive for his athletic capabilities, he is a high risk high reward guy who will play a hybrid attacking role, but his red flags are scary for a team who very rarely has high draft picks

I'd say he'd be mostly a OLB but he has experience rushing from the DT position so if we picked him I'd like to see Bosa and Suggs at OLB on run downs, then Bosa moves to DE on passing downs and let Suggs and doom take the outside.

But when he was asked, he showed he has the competency to do so.

I disagree,  you're talking about a 6'1 swiss army knife of a DB a la Tyrann Mathieu, long strides, freakish jumper, great closing speed.. I don't see how you can say he "lacks range". With his blend of size and athleticism he covers more ground than any DB in this entire draft and is even bigger and more athletic than a guy like Mathieu who might win DPOY this year. Speaking of the athleticism he possesses, Ramsey wants to compete in the 2016 Olympics for long jump.. the kid is a freak. Overly aggressive sometimes, yes. But it doesn't have to do with his level of athleticism. I've watched all the film available of him online and while he has shortcomings they certainly aren't range or athleticism.

The issue I have with Ramsey is just consistency and mental lapses. When he's on the top of his game he's an absolute game wrecker, however he is overly aggressive sometimes like you said and he does have mental lapses where he bites on a double move or gives too big of a cushion and get's beat underneath. Still, Ramsey has that "x factor".. he's like Tyrann Mathieu in Patrick Peterson's body. I see no more risk in Ramsey than I do in VH3, I think they both end up being really good pros.

he has little to no film showing deep coverage and everything he does is close to the line, it is really concerning if we are thinking of drafting him to help with our coverage problems then we may be disappointed when he does the same things as Lewis like getting caught In the wrong place or getting there a tad late because he bit on something else. For what it's worth I really like ramsey, but his red flags scare me, if we're out of the top 5, then I'm much more comfortable with it, if we can trade back a few spots then Ramsey, along with Stanley become my top 2 guys

I agree but those 2 flaws are 2 of the biggest issues we are having right now in our secondary, which is what we will be attempting to repair. We need disciplined players who won't have mental lapses and get beat on double moves. That being said he can always improve ...and I would hate to pass on him only for him to turn into the next big thing. I'd also be happy to trade back a few spots with the Cowboys or niners if bosa and tunsil are gone and grab him around 6 or 7.
