KO at left tackle in 2016.

250 posts in this topic

That is right and the team is not going to be very good next season.  Even when we drafted Ogden and Ray Lewis in 1996 we finished 4-12.  Whomever we get will be rookies and this team has more issues than a couple of rookies are going to solve.

I don't know about that, we just moved to Baltimore the following year. I don't know how much merit that holds I really think this will be a good team next season.

The question I would like answered is why didn't we sign him before Yanda?

I mean a 26 year old stud against a 31 year old

I wish we could just think about the future before signing these players to long term deals. Yanda's best years are behind him and with K.O we are already seeing him rise.

I love Yanda,  5 time NFL Probowler.  I get it.

But I'm for signing the younger guys and letting the older players walk. Or trade them.  Now, would be the perfect time to maximize his value.

For one, 31, even in the NFL, isn't old for a guard.  Yanda can play until he's 37 pending injuries.  Speaking of which, Marshal has played every game but 2 over the last seven years and KO hasn't played a full 16 games since his rookie season, including missing 11 games two years before Yanda signed his deal.

The best guard in the NFL who has been very healthy and has another half decade in him or an up and coming guard who has an injury history.

Finally, factor in that the plan was never to move KO to tackle during the last off season.  He was supposed to stay at LG and the Ravens do well with draft guards.  Look at Jensen for example. The LT stuff is pure hindsight a year later

We knew that he could play left tackle when we drafted him.  His health wasn't an issue this year.  I'm concerned about the present and future state of the team.

Yanda is without a doubt an absolute beast.  No denying that.  But looking forward I'd rather have K.O.  His ability to play multiple positions on the line and play them well is very valuable.

Yanda doesn't look good playing out of that guard spot.  He can stop the bleeding but he doesn't dominate out there.

I thought Yanda graded out pretty well in the games when he was moved to RT last year, no?

Well, realistically, Eugene Monroe and his contract are probably the biggest reason why KO isn't and probably won't be resigned. It might be different if Monroe sucked when he was actually playing, but the only real knock on him is durability. Its a big knock obviously, but the FO is notoriously patient with players with prior injury concerns. And I can't really blame them, considering basically everybody in the league gets injured multiple times in their career.

I'm also not as concerned about it at the moment, because we've got a decent chance of solving this long term problem with the #6 pick in the draft, and at about half the cost.

Because it takes two to tango? I suspect K.O. (And his agent) weren't ready to make a deal.

He was fine at tackle but not dominant. The idea of Yanda playing til 37 is absurd. I will be happy with another all pro year and pro bowl caliber year. KO is the enforcer of the ravens OLine. Actually, Jensen performed better against Tuitt than Yanda. Perhaps it was just a bad game but Yanda will be 32 next year. And one thing I learned was really big dudes lose their mojo at a younger age. It took about 5 yrs for Larry Allen to be recognized as the most dominating OLine player in the league. KO is about to get his recognition as the most overpowering OLine player in the NFL!! If ravens let him walk, by playoff time next year it will be viewed as one of ravens front office biggest blunders ever. He is going to be a pro bowl caliber left tackle. He is far leaner and more athletic than as a rookie. KO is the best player on the OLine. Yanda is the leader but KO is the most dominating player and can play guard and left tackle at a pro bowl level.

I swear this is literally like verbatim what I heard from dozens of people about Ben Grubbs.

Like literally word for word...

And don't bother doing some bogus comparison of the two because I've heard it all before. Every attribute describing KO was used for Grubbs as well.

KO will go get a big payday, play well, and this team will move forward and be just fine, just like it has done time and time again.

I'll still never understand the immense desire to move on from Zuttah. He hasn't been a superstar or anything but I think he's been well above average, which I'll gladly take at C compared to what other teams are dealing with.

People are either pro bowlers or bums around here.

That doesn't look good for us though.  No way can we get rid of this kind of talent and pretend we are in good shape.

In 2 years KO is going to be a better guard than Yanda, and thats not taking into account his ability to play tackle.

He did, and he was second team all pro at RT when he started there, but I wouldn't expect Virginia 55 to know that. Yanda is actually pretty dominant at RT.

In response to the questions about why we signed Yanda over KO, I want to add that RG is the most important position on the line. the RG is consistently tasked with blocking the JJ Watts and Gerald McCoys of the league. The team's best DT plays in  the B gap where you can't double him. If you double the 3, you have to block the LE with a tight end and a back, and that doesn't work. You need a dominant RG to take care of the dominant DTs like Suh. It's easier to give help to a LT or RT than RG. Also, pressure up the middle is more dangerous than pressure from the edge. Generally speaking, you can scheme help for every position on the line except the man blocking the 3. Against a standard front with two ends, a weakside 1, and a strong side 3, the RG is the only one who doesn't get help.

Also, if you ask me, KO's deficiencies are masked at LG where he's helping the center with double teams and getting to the second level. He still struggles getting good pad level against DTs, and he's not reliable at sealing the backside from quicker DTs. At LG, he's more likely to be assigned double teams and second level blocks. He's not going to be isolated with a dominant DT very often.

Yanda has short arms, slow feet, and doesn't move well  on the outside.

I don't care what he ranked at.  He didn't pass the eyeball test.

K.O can play left guard and left tackle easily the most valuable player on our line.

If we let him go, you'll know.

LT isn't the most valuable position on the OL anymore with DCs scheming pressure from the right side & up the middle to wreck the game. Teams used to go off of the weak side & strong side philosophy, but offenses & subsequently defenses adapted to this. It's no longer quite so simple.

I really want KO back, though. I still believe we can retain him.

Signing KO will be the most important thing we do this offseason.  The only way we can let him walk is if we plan on drafting one at #6.  If we rely on Monroe to be our LT next season with Joe coming off of ACL surgery we are asking to miss the playoffs.  Monroe gets the job done when he plays but that is the problem.  As soft as he is I could see him rehabbing until Thanksgiving saying he doesn't feel 100%.  Joe doesn't have great pocket awareness/elusiveness and coming off of this injury we have to keep him upright.

You mean like this year?? Letting KO walk and lose the most dominating sting offensive lineman in the NFL is a couple steps backwards. The last 2 games of the year the offensive line was clearly thGrubbsngest part of the ravens. At times the OLine dominated very talented and powerful DLines!! Urschel was adjusting to center and getting push the ravens never got before from the center. Jensen was stonewalling Tuitt!! A very strong defensive tackle that gave Yanda all he could handle and beat Yanda on multiple occasions including the only sack for Pittsburgh. Yanda was actually the weakest link for that game. Go watch it again. However it doesn't mean Yanda is not a great player. And as for the Ben Grubbs comparison and liking him better than Yanda. WRONG!! and WRONG!! Everybody here knows I like maulers on the OLine. And Yanda was a tough nasty mauler!! Grubbs generated movement from burst off the snap and athleticism. Grubbs is good but I liked Yanda far better!! And Grubbs was slightly overrated in my opinion. On a side note, at that time Carl Nicks was the most overpowering OLine player in the league. He was considered the most dominating OLine player since Larry Allen. And Nicks was more than athletic enough to play right tackle if necessary. It was incompetence that the saints let Nicks walk and signed Grubbs for $2mil less than Nicks costed. Yanda was always better than Grubbs!! More aggressive and stronger, intelligent and nearly as athletic. When ravens needed a right tackle it was Yanda harbaugh trusted to play.

However to compare losing KO to losing Grubbs is completely off the reservation!! KO is a different species altogether!! KO is the most overpowering offensive lineman in the league by far!! He was already a very strong and dominating player as a rookie!! Wilfork took himself out of the game several times to regroup from the Pummeling KO handed out!! Then as a rookie in the Superbowl KO mauled and dominated one of the toughest and most respected defensive line players in the league. Now KO is one of the hardest workers in the NFL. Look at his pics now as opposed to his rookie pics. He is far leaner and more muscular!! And a

more explosive aand athletic. Moves very smooth and sudden compared to his athleticism as a rookie!! Not that he was not athletic and fast for such a big player as a rookie but he is now a different and far better athlete. Not only leaner and more athletic but more powerful. And he is a better and more refined technician as well. Many 6'5 1\2 330 lb OLine players. But not many with a 6pak at 331lbs!! And 36" arms. Which means he has far more functional muscle than the rival OLine players!! Larry Allen played over 4 yrs as well before he got his recognition as the most overpowering OLine player in the league. Kelechi Osemele is getting his recognition next year as the most dominating OLine player. Like I said he is a leaner faster, more explosive and refined player and has pro bowl talent as a left tackle as well!! If ravens let him walk and he is a pro bowl caliber left tackle for guard money the ravens management is going to look incompetent!! KO will be the enforcer of the OLine next year and the best player. Yanda will be 32 and although a very good player he may not be as great and dominant after next year. Watch the pittsburg game. Jensen outplayed Yanda much less KO. Watch Yanda locking up with Tuitt then Jensen. Yanda struggled while Jensen stonewalled him. Jensen is a steal like Yanda. A 325lb deceptively athletic bull!! Oh and BTW Monroe was average at best!! Even when he played last couple yrs he struggled and even the media acknowledges it. Just because a player gets a big contract holds no water as for being a legit option!! Monroe is under 300lbs and seems to not care. Trusting him at left tackle is ludicrous!! The ravens offensive line would be shameful if management lets KO walk and counts on Monroe or some obscure rookie to play left tackle and the most dominating olineman in the NFL playing elsewhere. The ravens have the potential for the best OLine in the league. Letting KO walk and counting on Monroe leaves it a mediocre at best OLine!!

We knew that he could play left tackle when we drafted him.  His health wasn't an issue this year.  I'm concerned about the present and future state of the team.

we have little say when it comes to keeping osemele.

if he feels he should be the highest paid o-line he is as good as gone.

there is almost no way to keep him tbh.

you guys do know you need cap space to sign him right?

That's right, that didn't actually happen.

With all due respect, Tuitt didn't beat Yanda nearly as bad as you're suggesting. You can keep on spouting that nonsense but Yanda won far more than he lost. Yanda got an A against the Steelers, according to Filmstudy, and I would agree with that assessment as the resident offensive line expert. :P Jensen, however got a C for his game against the Steelers. For all your talk about how Jensen is the savior, I thought he had a mediocre grade against the Bengals, and Filmstudy agrees with that assessment.

Tell me what you can do schematically to help the RG with a 3 technique. I will wait patiently.

Look dude this is no knock on Yanda. I like Yanda. He is one of the best guards. I do not give a darn what off or filmstudy says. And you shouldn't either. What Virginia meant by the eyeball test was watch the game again but focus on the oline. There was a play Tuitt got Yanda going backwards then just brushed him off like a flea and sacked Mallett. I was like wow I didn't know Tuitt was that strong. He then used a move and Jensen inexperienced bit on it. He got Jensen going backwards. Then before he could discard Jensen and move inside for the pressure and or sack, Jensen caught his balance, anchored and stood him up in his tracks like TUITT ran into the great wall. To do that against a power rusher takes very good balance and power. There were several more plays Yanda struggled bud did make the blocks but clearly was not dominant. Yanda is going into season 10 and will be 32. Practically all the great guards were not the same at 33. Many were traded and released. Hutchinson,Faneca,Allen,Mankins all were on different teams and lostva step by the age of 33. Yanda will still be good but likely not dominant like he is. As for grades Yanda is a media and overall darling of critics and rightfully so. He will likely be all pro again next year even if there are guards that outplay him. Just like Eddie George was a darling and media and broadcasters did not like to talk or show the Ray Lewis hit. Big guys lose their mojo a year or so before positions like LB or receiver. Yanda will likely be all pro caliber next year even if he is not as dominant as usual. But OLine will eventually need a new anchor. KO is going to be the new anchor. If he walks the ravens will have to trade up for Tunsil to anchor the OLine once Yanda becomes a very good guard but not dominant. Of course I would like Yanda to be a deserving all pro for next 2 yrs. But most of the dominant guards were no longer the best at 33. As for helping the Right Guard. Watch the patriots last year and year before where help was CONSISTENTLY rolled to the right guard.

He referenced Film Study, and others have referenced PFF. Just as an FYI, both of these sites grade players based on WATCHING GAME FILM, also known as the eye ball test. So you can't simultaneously say that you don't care what their conclusions are and then also at the same time advocate watching game film and using the "eyeball test", because the two things are literally identical to each other.

Bottom line... the moment somebody comes out and their only source of information is the eye ball test, its sort of an immediate acknowledgment of a guessing, opinion, statement, rather than something definitive or factual.

Just be careful writing off what websites like these produce, since they produce those results based on the exact same criteria you are advocating for, which is film study.

Look dude this is no knock on Yanda. I like Yanda. He is one of the best guards. I do not give a d*** what off or filmstudy says.

I'll defer to Filmstudy and my own analysis when it comes to offensive line play. I'll come to you when I have a nutrition question ;)

I want you to tell me exactly how help was rolled to the RG. Having played RG, I'm really curious.

Yanda has short arms, slow feet, and doesn't move well on the outside.

I don't care what he ranked at. He didn't pass the eyeball test.

K.O can play left guard and left tackle easily the most valuable player on our line. ( I wouldn't expect you to know this).

If we let him go, you'll know.

I'm laughing at you saying he wouldn't know this because he's a former college offensive lineman, probably unlike you never having played football

Where and when did you play OLine?? Have you ever been to NFL camps?? Where did you work out. I know many college offensive lineman. A lot From Maryland. BTW I know somebody in Rhode island media. He told me whoever lines up at right guard needs help like Connolly and somebody else I can not remember the name at this second. It was during mankins last year with'em.

My friend Peter made that exact same move.

But yeah, if I have offensive line questions, I'm coming to you over anyone else
