[News] Ravens Sign Quarterback Ryan Mallett

61 posts in this topic

I think he may have been asked to get his act together and this contract may be so structured as to allow the Ravens an out if he were to resort to his old ways. I don't expect him to as a Raven given the familial atmosphere we create for our players and coaches. However, I think his strengths mimic that of Flacco and therefore as a back up he can execute the same offense as Flacco does especially given his strong arm. I think it may work out well for the Ravens as he learns to become a Raven by seeing Flacco work and backing him up.

6'6 245....sound familiar??? Seriously though i like the signing, i liked him coming out of Ark...He does have a rocket arm, and i think it is good to have a backup with similar traits as Flacco...Totally different personalities, but has good size, and arm strength....And he will be gone if he steps out of line, the organization showed they will show you the door if you act up....JMO....

I commented in the Late for Work article that they wouldn't announce it until they had a chance to talk to the QB they were planning on releasing. When Renner showed up today they could release him without him getting the info via social media. In addition, the Ravens said he had personal issues he needed to deal with but PFT is reporting the Ravens demanded Mallet get some "counseling" before he could sign with them. I don't know if that meant rehab, a shrink or what but clearly the Ravens let him know to get it together because there would be no second chance here. Now we have to wait and see whether the counseling helped and whether or not he can be reliable and responsible to his teammates here.

Bummed about Renner being released. If Mallett was pouting or rebelling about losing the starting job in Houston, I am not confident that he will be content to be a back up here without some possible negative undercurrent. Hope I am wrong but Mallett obviously thinks he is starting material and did not handle being a back up like a pro in Houston. Just hope Mallett is truly accepting the 2016 role of a backup. There's no way Mallett will replace a healthy Joe so I hope he has his head straight about his role.

Don't know much about Ryan Mallet, except the fact he sat behind Tom Brady since he's been drafted. Kind of hard to get playing time when you are sitting behind one of the greatest in the NFL. Ask Aaron Rodgers.  With that being said, Aaron Rodgers sat behind Brett Favre, Tom Brady behind Drew, Kurt Warner behind Trent Green. I know there's more, but I said all that to say, those guys who sat, when they got their chance to play, they won and went to Super Bowls at some point.

We all know that the Houston is like the QB killer. We all know what happen with Matt Shaub there, but he did win with those guys. Foster, Andre Johnson, and whoever else was there. They gave us a hard time a few times when we played against them. Since then they haven't had too much going on in QB position. So I wont judge Ryan Mallet on that, that's why I say I don't know much about Mallet.

This is what I do think, The guy is a big man like Cam Newton as far as size. I don't if three games is enough to warrant a spot on the team for next season, but it if you are successful and that doesn't mean necessarily win all three games, but the way you loose. Like interceptions and the disease known as fumblitis. Now if you go out and lay it on the line like its your chance at football for these three games then I think he'll be back.

Some may think why play hard when the season is done? Well it's  not done, there is three games left. You still going to want that check aren't you. Plus these past experiences with #1 draft picks is just not what it use to be.  Since we wont be picking 29-32 this season we will still have a shot of getting a decent guy, or even trade it or whatever the case may be, we will still be in a good spot in the draft, so ball out never know what might happen. Spoiler alert.

I think the best route for Mallet to revive his prospects is to just sit down to an interview and be honest to clear the air. Honesty, even when talking about past failures, is seen as a sign of maturity and growth.

This guy didn't have any problems in New England for 3 years. He didn't have problems his first year in Houston. The issues started when O'Brien needlessly dragged out the QB decision in Houston, and then kept flip-flopping Hoyer and Mallett in depending on his own arbitrary perception of which guy "had the hotter hand." The final straw was when Mallett got a little dinged up and came out for a handful of snaps against the Colts to be looked at by the trainers, got cleared, and O'Brien never let him back in.

O'Brien's M.O. at the start of the season was to force all of their opponents to prepare for both QBs as if doing so was gaining some sort of advantage.

None of this fully excuses Mallett's unprofessional reaction to the dysfunction and stupidity in Houston, but it just goes to explain the crappy way in which he felt used. And it also lets us know that backing up one of the most durable starting QBs in the league isn't the same as the instability of being told you're getting a chance in the NFL and then having it yanked away time and again on a coaches random whim.

Guess that means Schaub won't start another game for the Ravens... he's been pressing to much... trying to force passes that he should just swallow... sometimes a throw away is the best play you can make...

I like the time JB is getting on the field... I just hope he keeps grinding the next three weeks... I like how he attacks the defenders... runs physical... using every bit of his 6"2 220lb frame...

that's actually a good point. I never really thought of it that way. I just remembered seeing mallets reaction during that game when hoyer came in and threw a td - he just had this disgusted look on his face and didn't congratulate him or anything he just sat by himself pouting. But obrian definitely didn't handle that situation very well.

I am really sick to my stomach we picked up Mallett at the expense of Renner, who I was hoping would get a shot to see what he could actually do in a regular game.  Smh.

The ESPN article that says Mallet assured the Ravens he got professional help for his personal issues also says they IR'ed (not waived) Renner.

Coulda sworn coaches just said 2016 starts now, we'll see a lot of younger players.... So we sign mallet and kick Byrne Renner to the curb. Wow

My assumption here is that the evaluation of Renner during his time on the PS was that his arm strength was simply not up to standard. The guy seemed to have some promise, but any evaluation you read on him before and during his time here - that is consistently stated as a significant weakness.

Mallett has other issues, but arm strength is not one of them. I'm going to again assume that the staff feels that they may be able to teach him to over come his shortcomings, but you can't teach a guy to throw the ball with zip.

I know ... I saw that too and was thinking, man - you need to wait until you go off camera before you start pouting, cause you're looking like a baby on the sidelines. We'll see how that works out here and if he has proven that he's matured to some degree.

I like the idea... Mallet has a huge upside... and while he comes with some issues... we are expecting Flacco to continue to be our starter. Mallet is promising and his presence presents a potential starter which gives us some leverage in bargaining with Joe / and his agent to re-structure in the coming year! This is a smart business move / not necessarily for right now... when you play chess - you have to have the ability to look down the road...not simply think about the here and now. Ozzie and company are playing chess with this move and it presents a power move in a two fold way (for down the road)! Smart move... (even if Mallet never plays a down as a Raven)!

Another questionable move by this organization. Lets bring a guy in who does what & when he wants. Heck lets go get Ryan Leaf while were at it. Lets not use a guy we used in preseason. I'll make anyone a bet on here. John will be fired before he gets back to the playoffs. They can't judge talent anymore.

mallett is the least of my concerns. will harbaugh have the cahones to fire pees, all the secondary coaches and castillo. will the front office make the right picks and will we get the real story on why arthur brown has gotten no playing time

I usually back the Ravens' signings completely, but this one is awful. If you wanted to sign someone who absolutely does not play and conduct himself like a Raven, Mallett's a good choice.

Really wish Harbs would step up and stop protecting his "friends"... Drop Pees and (hopefully) bring back Pagano after he is let go after this season.

Se should've placed Schaub on IR and given Renner his proper chance. He had exciting play in the preseason even if it was garbage preseason play. Kid did NOT QUIT and deserves a chance for playing like a true raven. Can we please get some leadership in the lockerroom too? Without Lewis this team is lax and lost.

Here I was hoping we were done with the bad news for this season, but guess not: Ryan Mallett for $2.5M in 2016...jeesh!

Considering everything that's been going on with this dude, his immaturity, arguing with coaches, discipline problems, overruling OC-s play calling etc., than 2.5M seems WAAAAAY too much. And he's not even that good of a player.

Why we throwing this kind of money at this kind of backup player is beyond me. I understand we need solid backup with Flacco's injury, but I seriously believe we could have gotten a backup QB with at least similar potential (weighing in all pros and cons) with much less money. Guess we have too much cap space in our hands, LOL.

The Ravens scouting department stinks. Daniel Brown could very well be on some other team right now with the way the Ravens have handled him... same as Jeremy Butler. Maybe Renner is another diamond in the rough but we will never know in Baltimore will we?
