if we land Bosa in the first, is doubling up a possibility?

31 posts in this topic

i have a few guys in mind that could possibly fall due to combine numbers that could be a HUGE help if we were lucky enough to land bosa in the first. if we take a guy like Bosa in the first, it would be nice to have a legitimate stud either at DE in front of him, or across the line as another rusher, some guys that come to mind that are first round talents that could slide to the early 2nd for us are deforest buckner, shaq lawson, emmanuel ogbah, and adolphus washington. all of them are very big, very strong guys, they are bullies up front, but we all know that most of the NFL emphasizes speed and burst over a big strong bully, the ravens arent in this category, and if we were to make a huge investment at OLB like a top 5 pick for a guy like Bosa, we would be doing ourselves a big favor by doubling up and assuring an elite position group.

lawson and ogbah would be good ROLB's for us, they would step into upshaws role and provide the same dominance in the run game but more flexibility as they both are much better on an island with OT's in the pass rush, they would both be great fits here, and both of them will likely have weakish 40 times, even though that isnt an indicator of success at all, teams still read too heavily into that, and it could affect their stocks for sure.

buckner and washington would make instant elite 3-4DE's i think, and they could also have some shoddy workouts because they are both huge and not the fastest guys, but again they are explosive up front and are natural bullies on the line, they would make an ugly tandem with a guy like bosa and would make up the most feared edge in the league. being viewed as a DL prospect i think buckner has very little chance to be greatly affected by numbers such as 40 times, but its still worth thinking about. i have a first round grade on washington and its very possible he makes it to the early 2nd.

all long shots, but even if we take a top 5 pick on a front seven guy, could ozzie even bring himself to pass if one of these guys were to fall? i dont think so, and i would applaud it, im a big fan of doubling up and not just improving a group, but making it dominant in one swift motion.

Didn't Adolphus Washington get suspended from the Bowl game? I wonder how that affects his stock.

I wouldn't mind him. He's way better than Bennett, his former teammate.

what was the reason? i like him as a 5-tech for us, he can get push, eat space, and penetrate all at once, a well rounded DT/DE hybrid who has good size and strength to compliment solid athleticism and agility is the definition of a ravens prototype DL. i wouldnt wanna take him alone in the 2nd, like if we drafted a DB or an OT in the first, in that case id want a wr or a true pass rusher, or double up on db even, but i would only wanna take a DE/DT if we land bosa in the first, i dont see a reason to draft a guy for a position where we are solid unless its for the sake of making one side of our defense literally unblockable.

I see Edge Rusher as the #1 need on the entire team. We could use help along the DL and in the secondary but we desperately need an Edge Rusher. It's a 2 birds with 1 stone deal because the improved pass rush helps the secondary so that's why I put it as our #1 need.

I really like Ogbah. Suggs is on his last legs and there's no guarantee he's ever the same player again going forward. Time to start grooming a young buck to take us into the future opposite Doom. As for doubling up... it obviously depends how the board falls but I'm not crazy about taking back to back defensive players. Ideally I would like to see 1 offensive and 1 defensive player selected in rounds 1&2 but I'm not opposed to taking 2 defensive players if they are the right value.

I would go absolutely nuts if we got Buckner in the second. But I don't see him making past the first 12 picks unless something catastrophic happens.

Also Ogbah and Lawson could surprise some people at the combine, they are both 270+ I think Lawson might be even close to 280 so if either of them run faster then 4.8 I'd say that's a success.

i dont see it either but i also acknowledged that these are all longshots. i think lawson and ogbah could be ruled out for many 3-4 teams as first round picks simply because of 40 times and only 4-3 teams will be looking at them, if that happens then it is worth a though

Thats a possibility I think maybe not a high chance but who knows, Lawson and ogbahs stock has been all over the place I can't get a consistent read on either of them. But I am very open to doubling up especially grabbing a pass rusher then Dlineman or vice versa, there is a ton of talent on the interior D line this year so some talented guys are gonna fall.

I think it's always a possibility but it depends on what we do in free agency. I think we should double up on DL/OLB, but I think if we are going to do that we shouldn't go back to back early, but if someone falls then I wouldn't be upset if we did. I think Carl Lawson in the third (if he declares) would be tops on my list if we take someone in the first. As far as the second goes there are lots of options, especially if we trade back (either in the first or in the second, which I still maintain is the best move in the first as far as we are concerned).

I really still like Maliek Collins from Nebraska but he's be a DT in our system I think, so he wouldn't fit too neatly with Jernigan and Guy at that position. Sheldon Day from Notre Dame is interesting and I think he could play DE or possibly stand up if he lost a bit of weight (but I see him as a better fit in the 4-3, a lot like McPhee). Yannick Ngakoue is a popular name around here, and if we are looking for a straight up OLB then I really like Ngakoue as a third rounder or in the fourth if he falls a bit. Another guy that I've said before that I like, Anthony Zettel from Penn State, I think would play DE for us and could stand up, for a DT he gets tons of pass deflections so he's already got some skill reading QBs and handling coverage duties which would be nice for an OLB on our D, but I've seen him as a late first rounder so there is almost no chance of us taking him.

This feels like a waste of a thread. We are going to draft BPA. If that player is an edge then we will take one.

no such thing as a waste of a thread if you ask me. The board pretty much has infinite space, if you don't like a thread or something then just keep on scrollin.

I don't see why not as of right now. You can never have enough pass rushers.

Suggs and Doom are both getting old, entering cut range soon on their contracts. That's 2 spots open down the line.

Z'Smith hasn't looked like anything more than average right now, but you need more pass rushers anyway.

Realistically, we could double-up on Edge, CB, S, WR, and/or OT and it wouldn't surprise me at all (not necessarily in rounds 1 & 2, of course).

No way they double up when top picks at OT,WR, CB will be available.

besides fuller, boyd, and doctson, who are not guaranteed to be there, who are you referring to?

I like speed rushers with good strength. In today's NFL where it is increasingly tougher to get the jam because the dback can't touch'em after that. And the NFL offenses are putting an emphasis on getting the ball out in a blink!! And the rules are making it easy to do so. Even when ravens had Ngata,Suggs,Lewis,Reed,Johnson,Redding,Webb before injuries Joe Cool on a fairly consistent basis carried the Defense and was let down by the defense. Even the most vaunted defenses in the NFL like seattle and panthers are finding themselves in shootouts when playing good offenses or hot QBs. It is what the NFL set out to do!! All for giving Joe Cool some help FOR A CHANGE in playoff/Superbowl shootouts. How many times did defense let Joe Cool down then a receiver drop a throw or fail to get open?? Look at the superbowl and this year. How many times has the seahawk defense been shredded. Of course defensive help for the ravens is wanted. But after the Oline is set and a legit receiver is added.

but once again, landing tunsil is extremely unlikely, and it's hard to pass up bosa for Stanley if the opportunity presents itself, and after that the pickings are slim at OT, wr obviously looks solid but do you take a legit 2nd round wr over the opportunity to pair bosa with another first round edge defender who slipped a few spots to us? You can point out the abundance of shootouts, but In those games you often need to Just make one stop, if you boast the best pass rush in the league you're more likely to do so

I think it'd be irresponsible not to double up if we get the chance. We have Dumervil (old), Suggs (old and injured) and Zadarius Smith (unproven) next year. Bosa is a great pick and would probably get moved around since he gets good pressure on the inside, he could play 5 or even 3 technique on passing downs at a high level. Then later if we could pick up a pure edge rusher like Devonte Fields or Kyler Fackrell in the 3rd to 5th, that'd make the pass rush better and give a chance to develop some young guys.

Another edge would be nice but I would say in the later rounds. I really think we need a WR in the 2nd round, Michael Thomas could fall to our 2nd, I can't gauge what type of a steal that would be.

It's always possible. There's so many holes on this team and a real lack of depth that we could double up anywhere (outside of QB, Punter, and Kicker) and I wouldn't be surprised. If you take Bosa round one and a guy like Nkemdiche or Ogbah is sitting there in the second or Carl Nassib/Yannick Ngakoue is there in the third it's a no brainer.

that's a good point. How many times would we have had the opportunity to win a game this year if we just made that one stop and got the ball back to our offense? On the other hand we've been in the position to win several games had we just made one more play on offense but a receiver couldn't get open. But I agree, doubling up is not a bad idea at all. Esp if givin the chance at two premiere rushers like bosa and nkem or even ogbah and nassib. Edited by January J

I'm actually beginning to like the idea of bosa paired with... Drum roll... Leonard Floyd if he falls. He may not be a system fit, but he can do mcphees role x10, he's so explosive and paired with a rusher that can dominate by any means like bosa, he would bring a great dynamic to the rush.

I haven't watched any Floyd yet, I'm hoping to watch some this week. But all I know is the defense is severely lacking athleticism if he can help as a pass rush specialist, add some real speed to our pass rush group then I'd take him but like I said I've yet to see him so the jury is still out.

he's a very exciting player, he is definitely not suited for a huge role in a 3-4, he looks like a more athletic Anthony barr, but if he can come in on passing downs and threaten with his speed then he could be a huge asset, especially with a strong supporting cast. He also appears to have great instincts and good iq, and has a skill set for coverage as well. Wouldn't even sniff him in the first though

Sounds like he'd be better off in a Von Miller type role before they switched to a 3-4. I'll have to check him out, the real question is if Ozzie would draft a guy like that and would Pees use him right?

as much as I hate pees, he knows how to use these kinds of guys to their fullest. I do believe he could get 8 or so sacks a year from him in a rotational role. His scheming almost made mcphee what he became, he was brilliant with mcphee, and Floyd would be even more effective. The question is, can he hold up physically when he isn't rushing, and is a part time player worth an early pick?

Lack of speed on defense has absolutely killed us this year. So I would be happy with Floyd in the second.

floyd is a mid to late first guy right now but he could have a big rise, he is probably going to measure very, very well at the combine. he already reminds me a bit of vic beasley and if he can pack on some muscle and maintain his burst at the combine like he did, then he wont sniff the 2nd...

if he cant add any weight though, and teams get scared off by that, he becomes interesting as a potential 2nd

I don't think The Ravens are going to give up on Zadarius Smith so if they did draft pass rusher than I expect only one  with the expectation that Smith will get better .

that wouldn't be giving up. That would be acknowledging that our only future at pass rush is a 4th round rookie who has done nothing to inspire hope. I like zds, I've liked him since Kentucky, but moving on as if we're convinced that he's our guy would be reckless. Plus, you can never have too many pass rushers
