Updated: Ravens Sign Ryan Mallett

Please dont tell me you are falling for Mallett as our new backup QB...

There's nothing to fall for. Us giving him a 2 year deal indicates that the team is evaluating him for the backup job next year. There's a chance he might not make it that long, but it's pretty obvious that this was a move made with next year in mind.

1.5 mil base is not guaranteed and the other 1 mil is based on incentives.

classic ravens fans overreacting.

seems like a very low risk/ high reward deal.....

Clausen and Trestman know each other from Chicago, although I'm not sure whether he played any snaps before Trestman got fired.

I know Clausen started a game for the Bears last year as Cutler got benched

I wouldn't be against seeing Mallett of course.  I just think it's going to be very tough for a guy coming into a completely new offense to get acclimated in time not only to play, but to essentially run the offense.  We got "lucky" with Clausen in that he'd been under Trestman before.  It's not an exact replica by any means, but there's definitely going to be some similarity for a guy like him.  Mallett may be working hard but it's still a whole hell of a lot to learn.  What makes it even tougher is that he's been known to be rattled under pressure previously.  I think it's clearly a move for next year with the slight possibility of them seeing what we have in the last game.

I think they will just try to keep it as simple as possible for him for now. He will learn all the ins and outs and intricate details this offseason.

my thoughts exactly. The second he becomes a locker room cancer or misses a flight he will get the boot. The upside is we get a backup who's not a turnover and pick 6 MACHINE and has the same strong arm as joe to throw the long ball that we will hopefully go back to next year when Perriman gets healthy.

This thread is laughable. You guys are talking about 2 complete losers and suggesting they have something of value to offer this team. Just shows you how far down we have slid to give the likes of Claussen/Mallet a starting QBs job. I'm so embarrassed by this farce. God help us!!

Right now we don't have a franchize QB which is why we're kicking the tires on the trash heap... what did you expect, or do you have a better idea?

I don't think any of our current 3 QBs are any good, but there's not exactly anything better out there. These are the types of guys you get when your QB gets hurt.

I do have a much better idea. Let Bryn Renner finish out this dismal year. He has experience with the offense and won a pre-season game for us.

If us or any team really thought anything of him, he wouldn't have spent 12 weeks out on the open market.  The guy wasn't even on a practice squad across the league.

He looked a hell of a lot better in pre-season than Matt Schaub or any other of the bums on our roster have in the regular season. You got to be kidding ? At least he won a game and he didn't throw a pick six.. It just goes along with the rest of the terrible coaching decisions this year. Ryan Mallet is a piranha in the league.  I suppose you want Ray Rice back too?

Against 3rd stringers, and still no one has signed him but us for 1 week where we needed a guy who knew the system...

Competent QBs don't sit on the open market for 12 weeks.

Classic case of fans thinking they know more than NFL talent evaluators do...

Oh well !! Better than Ryan Mallet for sure. Or is that Ryan Leaf? Not sure I know the difference.

More like a case of common sense.

Yup, all those guys getting paid more than you and with a better resume of football lack common sense.

Gotta join us in the real world at some point.

So you're saying that 32 teams don't know what they're doing?  Because all of them have had a chance to sign Renner and only we did for 1 whole week because he knew the offense.

I'm saying he is a better option than bringing in a loser like Ryan Mallet. Pee Wee Herman is a better option than Mallet.

Not going to pretend that Mallett is any good. I didn't and still don't really like the signing. However, 32 teams not wanting Renner says a lot about him.

Mallet has more upside than Renner and he also has won more regular season games than Renner as well if i'm not mistaken. I haven't really watched alot of games of this guy but he does have a very strong arm when it comes to throwing those deep balls similar to Joe Flacco. It seems like the guy has the talent to  be good but his immaturity has got in the way along with other stuff.

If he get his act together and real focus on football than it's quite possible he could be a steal for The Ravens. It's also pretty cool to have two quarterbacks that can throw it deep on a consistent basis so for the most part if Mallet is around next year the receivers won't have to adjust awhole because Mallet and Flacco have some similar traits.

Hate this signing and the other garbage backups. Get a Qb that can do it all. Not another statue.

Like who?

Like Tyrod that we let walk. Just to get on the backup QB carouel.

Tyrod is not available.

So, who should we get?

While I agree with you, what makes it frustrating is that Mallet does have some talent, and in the right environment, I think he could grow into a solid starting QB (assuming he ever matures as a person).
