[News] Late For Work 12/9: Ravens' Draft Outlook Over Final Stretch

70 posts in this topic

I thought it was humorous to see that Rashaan Melvin was cut by the Patriots and not because of Melvin, but because one of the commenters in here was pointing to the fact that Ravens cut players and they are successful with other teams and that commenter used Melvin as an example. To see he was cut kind of beats down the argument that Ozzie cuts good players. He loses players to free agency but most people who are cut are rarely if ever superstars somewhere else. Even the free agents who chase the money are more than not unsuccessful as evident by Cary Williams tanking in Seattle.

Another aspect that is different than the Melvin situation is what Harbaugh said in the offseason.... There are millions of people out there physically gifted enough to play in the NFL. What makes NFL players is the mind set, hard work, and also the system. Working out hours upon hours a day is tiring but players have to do that. A lot do not have the mind set to understand what is happening on the field at all times. A lot do not fit into the system. This is why I think Seattle is doing well as of late. Jimmy Graham does not fit their system. He does not block. Seattle is known for running the ball. If they have him on the field the other team knows that if he is on the field they are going to pass or they will run away from him. Once he went down with an injury they started running the ball better. There are so many aspects to a player in football that the front office has to look at before deciding to bring them in or not. Just like the Rolando McClain experiment here... He got kicked out of Oakland. We brought him in hoping he could save our linebacker position... He got kicked out of here... Now he is playing in Dallas and has a strike there but is playing good football. But is his off the field issues worth it? It is weighing the risks and rewards and sometimes you overestimate or underestimate them.

Playoff thoughts evaporated weeks ago. However, I am feeling optimistic about next year. Our young, inexperienced players getting a lot of real game action will help the FO build a strong 2016 roster and I fully expect the Ravens to be back in contention next season. It would take a miracle indeed to make the playoffs this year.

I agree. What is even funnier to me is when we cut him and the Patriots signed him, Bellicheck stood at the podium and touted Melvin big time saying that they wanted him right out of college, how skilled he was and so on. Now they cut him, and that just goes to show that Ozzie and company know what they are doing. People shouldn't forget that.

We will end up picking 4th-5th, after the Browns, Titans, and Chargers, and maybe Cowgirls. This coming draft will either cement Ozzie's legacy or sink it. Nail it with a high position for next year, and we're back in business and life is good. Miss like a few years have been, and it's a long road back to respectability.

These next four games will set the pace for the off-season and determine which players will be here next season. A lot of developing players who haven't been as strong have 4 games remaining. I'd like to have seen the Ravens keep QB Renner on the practice squad and even brought up to the 53 for this part of season since Flacco was injured vice bringing in Clausen who won't be here next season unless he gets the opportunity to play and impress which he has in the past and found himslef unemployed. Let's go and let's grow Ravens!

Harbaugh kills me with these effort points. Football is based off of wins and loses, not effort. These guys are being paid millions of dollars...they should have effort smh.

Should but some don't. That is where a good coach like Harbaugh comes into play. Think about how hard it is to keep a young 22-23 year old with a few million dollars in his pocket motivated. Harbaugh has these guys still believing in themselves and going out there with no quit whatsoever. My hat is off to the coach for the job he has done.

A wise man once said:

"Wins and losses come a dime a dozen. But effort? Nobody can judge effort. Effort is between you and you. Effort aint got nothing to do with nobody else. So that team that think they ready to seen you? They think what they seen on film. They ain’t saw what film shows. Because every day is a new day. Every moment is a new moment."

"So now you got to go out and show them that you a different creature now than I was five minutes ago. Cause I’m pissed off for greatness. Because you ain’t pissed off for greatness, that mean you OK with being mediocre. Aint no man in here OK with bring just space. So let’s do what we do. Tonight, we ain’t gotta worry about taking no breaks.”

1. Patriots playing right now like Ravens from get go, except that Brady is not nearly as good as Joe at the deep ball, and they are only down TE1, WR1, and RB1. Both lack outside deep threat speed. The exception is that Brady is doing worse with more talent than Joe did with less talent, except that no one criticizes that whiny Brady.

2. Melvin, I was worried that Belicheat was going to get good use out of him, but knew it was a signing to spite the Ravens because in his press conference he said they wanted him, but could have claimed him at anytime from Tampa before the Ravens last year. The animosity between that team and ours is worse than the Steelers. They are despicable top to bottom, and Bill was in full jerk mode in his press conference this week. I loved it, sports schadenfreude. He said there was not enough time to comment on his trying to drop kick an onside kick which led to them loosing the game. Arrogant, trying to get in the record books since no one has done that since footballs were changed from Rugby balls. They were looking past the Eagles. That or they threw the game to them because Bill is friends with that weasel Chip Kelley.

3. I hope we get Cary, just to keep him from the corner deficient Patriots.

4. The Pats tried fixing the game twice last Sunday with TV timeout maipulation. They showed Murdoch (president of FOX) in the box with Kraft and he put on a patriots rally hat at like 7 minutes left then they didn't take TV timeouts in-between the two Patriots comebacks (significantly less than 2 minutes between score and kickoff which is much less than if there is a TV timeout), both times to sustain momentum during the game. Kraft has total control of that when he controls the NFL TV contracts and has the TV network presidents sit in his owners box during the games so he can use them to command it when needed. This is the exact thing that happened during out playoff game with them last year. Blatant fixing and someone should do a study.

We have to take "best available" player its just how we use to roll when we were successful.....and don't waste screen ink talking about playoffs its just sad and delusional, like most of you that even still think that way........Get a grip and hope we lose out and pick up a quality player for a change(Oz will probably trade down even though we have 30 picks its how he thinks)so i'm not even going to waste time about it until draft time.....And harbs is on notice whether you like it or not he's got 1 foot out the door already....and should have!!!

I agree that "best available" method has work for the Ravens in past.  But, losing out for a draft-pick is absurd.  Who is giving Harbaugh notice, you or Bisciotti? Since 2008 Harbaugh has missed the post season twice (including this season). Just based on that stat, a person can assume that Harbaugh is a winning coach.

He also said something they play on SiriusXM constantly (and I love).

"Stop the run. Get after the quarterback. - Heros Baby!"

I don't see Cary Williams cashing his guaranteed contract anytime soon. Take PR with a grain of salt. I can dream of Bosa fighting next to CJ for a decade. But Joe is going to need a replacement for Monroe. Maybe a cap casualty somewhere but they'll use a pick somewhere. Ramsey and Hargreaves get so much attention but they may not be worth a first rounder for the Ravens. Depends on how u evaluate Webb and Smith. Not many see them returning to prior high level form and Jimmy has a big contract that needs some ironing out. He's way overpaid regardless of how u split the difference.

if he's not on notice we need a new owner.......ok how many more year's would you give him?....Unless Ray Lewis comes back(who i would totally back for coach)I really think harbs has run his course............harbs has a track record of hiring sub par coaches(how many have we had and kept)and be as predictable as the sun rising every day with his game plans.....A change would be nice!

I want to see Renner right now. "He's got a bit of that 'It factor'."- Marc Trestman, and like speed, you can't teach that 'It Factor'. Think Daniel Brown, he has that it factor too, he is showing it now. I wish Renner got the chance because that is what he needs, and he could back up Joe next year with 4 games experience and come cheap too. Maybe he would flame out, but he should have been given the chance.

I will fight for your right to have this opinion, but I think you are nuts, absolutley wonko about this. If fired, Harbs would instantly be hired by a good team needing a head coach for one of the if not the highest contract for a head coach in the league.

You do realize that those "sub par coaches" left to become Head Coaches on NFL teams, right? SMH

Great post, I completely agree, however I accidently hit the down arrow instead of the up arrow, so consider this post having more ups ..... I hate the up and down arrows right next to each other, I have hit the wrong arrow so many times..... Ugh.....

I can't see the point in worrying about miracle scenarios - neither fans nor team. The team just needs to go out and try to win games. As a fan, I intend to watch to see us play with heart and show some hope for the future, but talking about playoffs at this point is ridiculous.

If we had pulled out a couple of these pathetic losses and still had Flacco - that would be one thing. Where we are sitting now both with record and what is left of our team - please.

I agree that we do need to go best available ... that's just what smart teams do. Given we have a wide range of needs, it shouldn't be hard to make that work. Also, I agree that it has gotten kinda ridiculous to talk about playoffs. I thought we all agreed to stop using the "P" word weeks ago.

The rest of what you said - couldn't disagree more.

I used to think Harbs  was just managing a team run by ed and ray but after seeing how he has kept this team fighting even after we are all but guaranteed no playoff run has me changing my tune. Our guys fight for him. He is their coach and I have a new found respect for John .
