2016 Salary Cap & Possible Moves

327 posts in this topic

He definitely has his downfalls, but I still think you'd be hard pressed to find anything better. I mean, the Jaguars are trotting out something called a Jason Myers and pretending he's a competent option. I'd rather not be in a situation like that again.

I'm just saying that I would not devout $4M+ of the  limited cap space to a kicker who is far from a weapon at home.

And the Ravens did find Tucker when Cundiff was here, so it's possible to find another kicker.

Well, they definitely have to be able to practice at the stadium at some points because they host practices there, but even still, what is it about Baltimore that makes him miss? Even if he's not at the stadium, he's still in Baltimore practicing kicks for most of the offseason.

he said it's something about how the wind circulates through the stadium. It's like a cross wind. He's not the first one to say this though so I don't think it's an excuse. But he does need to find a way to fix it.

The thing that baffles me is Heinz Field is considered to be the toughest stadium to kick in because the three rivers cause some major swirling winds, but he has no issue.

I don't like that reason, personally

Tucker will be fine. It seems like he only misses when the team is struggling oddly enough. He is responsible for 3 of our 4 victories this year. Offseason and the new field will get him back right.

87.4%FGM in 62 games is by no means shabby, With a career of 16-28 from 50+. Between the 20-40 he has missed one kick out of 77 kicks in his entire career, thats pretty damn good, while going 33-38 from 40-49.     Would love for him to make more obviously, but i still believe he is a top kicker in this league and think we will be just find to have him moving forward.  Its not easy to find a kicker thats clutch...he has made some big kicks for us, 50+ yard FGs are not easy.   I hope we lock him up

Sidenote, hes already making 2.3mill...to give him another 1.5 a year to lock him up long term is a no brainer to me.  Right now the average of the top 5 kickers come out to 3.6mill per overthecap.com

All I know about next years UFA is we should bring Muhammad sanu in for a talk. I'd love to see him where he belongs.

He'd be at least better backup QB than any of guys we have now.

He regressed.   He isn't focused on being a great kicker like he was when he was competing for a job vs Billy/Haushka.   The 2 year after that he has been short of amazing.

After that, you see him this and last year and you can see him missing shots he'd never miss before.

Free agency is going to be interesting this year.  We don't have the big names we typically do, but we're still tight against the cap of course and we could lose some nice role players.

Top Tier:

Kelechi Osemele - I think we'd all love to keep him, but the price could be too much.

Justin Tucker - Even with his struggles this year, he's still one of the better kickers in the game.

Kamar Aiken (RFA) - He really stepped up and he's a great piece to keep around.

Next Tier:

Shareece Wright - I'll be damned if he didn't prove me wrong.  We could do much worse as a 3rd/4th CB.

Courtney Upshaw - I'm interested at the right price, but I wouldn't be mad if he walked.

Morgan Cox - He's been the model of consistency.  It won't be much to keep him, but I think we need to.

Brynden Trawick (RFA) - He's arguably the top ST guy on the team right now.

Take It or Leave It:

Chris Givens - He hasn't done much here, but he should be cheap enough to bring back to compete in camp.

Albert McClellan - He's getting expensive for a bottom of the roster type, but he's a strong STer and reserve at all LB positions.

Jimmy Clausen - I don't want him, but wouldn't be surprised if he sticks around camp while Joe is healing up.

Chris Carter - He was just signed, so no idea what we have in him yet.

Chase Ford (RFA) - He's played well in his time in Minnesota, so I'd think he's worth keeping around for camp on a small deal.

Bye:

Matt Schaub - This is obvious.

Richard Gordon - He's here only to fill the TE depth void for the rest of the year.

Allen Reisner - He only stuck on IR since he had a legitimate injury.

Marlon Brown (RFA) - He's awful.

Theres an article about Schaub and his payday on the front page of yahoo, but i cant access it at work

*there is also another article about Carl Davis and a 11k$ dinner bill...

There were some speculations that one of reasons Schuab was signed was due to his  understanding of Gary Kubiak offensive system which would be helpful to Marc Trestman and even Joe Flacco.

Yea i think thats the obvious connection, we basically hired him to be a consultant.

And i just read that article from Yahoo on my phone.  Looks like we will be on the hook for another million.  he will get 500k for playing 5% of snaps for the Ravens or a 1mill for playing 10% of snaps.  We have played 994 snaps in 14 games.  In the final two games we play, if we have the average amount of snaps (71) that we have done till now, schaub will be at 12.3%, we would have to have 200 snaps per game to get him under 10% even if he doesnt play one more snap per Pro Football Focus

He definitely doesn't deserve to be the highest paid that's for sure. I'd pay him exactly what the 3rd or 4th highest paid kicker is making.

Couldn't agree more with you. Hopefully that is what ends up happening and Tucker et al don't make ti difficult for the Ravens to sign him long term. If that happens, expect him to be franchised next year and get some competition next year just in case....

How ironic would it be if we signed Boldin and Torrey in the offseason? I honestly wouldn't be opposed to it. I can see Torrey being released in SF.

What's the cap hit for them and how much do they save?

Aiken isnt getting a long term deal. Hell be tendered maybe a 2nd rounder. Think thats 1.6m if Im correct.

Tucker should get 3.6M. The average of the top 5 kickers. With how bad he is at home Id say his agent would be a fool to ask to make him the highest paid kicker in the league. Honestly if that was even the starting point Id kick, haha see what I did there?, them right out of the office and say dont bother coming back.

I agree Schaub should be gone. Tbh Id rather keep Claussen cheap. He can be Joes backup. Next year when they actually run Trestmans system at least he knows the language.

MBrown Im eating huge crow on. What a disapointing pile he is. I wouldnt even tender him. Let him boast to his fellow fry makers at McDs about his awesome rookie year.

With that the WR core needs some help, so keep Givens no reason not to. Hope Sr comes back. Hope theres a alien sighting of Perriman, keep Aiken like I said above as the 3 or 4 depending on spread. BUT bring in Garcon once Wash cuts him. 2 year deal at 2 money. Hell take it and wont be in any bidding wars. As weve discussed before. Perriman, Sr, Garcon, Aiken, Givens, Waller and finally a mid round draft pick to round it all out.

In F.O. defense, I don't think anyone ever expected Joe to get hurt.  Considering his track record.

Live and learn I guess...

No the problem was they brought in Schlub to help Trestman with the offense and keep that continous for Joe. Instead of saying let Marc run his own. Ya couldve gotten a bum of the street and handed him the playbook. Thats dumb. You bring a guy in, let him run HIS offense. You had the whole offseason to work on language and plays and so on. Its not like Caldwell after Cam in the middle of the season. THIS is why we were graded as front runners. New guy in, new offense. But no we played cute and handed the playbook to Trestman and told him to learn it. Thats arsebackwards.

The question is: would either of them get released?

I'd love to have both at the right price. Let me preface my comments by saying that before last year's offseason, I said I wouldn't be all that sad if Torrey left us.

Boldin is a FA in 2016. Cutting Torrey only saves them $1.2M. He's not getting cut.

I expect Boldin to consider retirement as well.

One thing we have to look at is when the top 5 kickers last made their deals, have to take in account for infaltion. Every year players prices goes. But i agree the 3.5-3.8 range im ok with.

Also, dont forget about Camp.  I know he has been injured a lot but it seems the FO loves him.  I dont think he is ever going to be healthy, the guy has talent, but the best talent any player can ever have is availability.

I can understand that, but i just cant get behind how much money we gave him, What did we sign him for originally? 2.5? now add in another million....doesnt seem worth it to me at all

Yea i dont know why people think Torrey would get cut one year into his deal.  I havent really paid much attention to Boldin, did he slow down that bad or could it be attributed to bad qb play?

I thought it was 1.5 bumping up to 2.5 with bonuses, but I could be wrong.

I wrote this in another thread. Maybe the total is 2.5. But from the article I gathered he's making 3
