Prospects with weird and unpredictable stock

38 posts in this topic

dumervil is good at timing snaps but when a player relies on that we see many offsides, which we have seen with dumervil this year. He has to over compensate knowing he's the only good pass rusher and that pressure leads to early jumps too often, I'd rather get a guy who has a good balance of timing and jump, instead of A guy who relies on one of those

Yeah, same, but it's still  effective. It's always better to have a guy with great burst a la Von Miller or Suggs than a guy who can time the snap exceptionally well. Having someone who does both is rare. Both can be effective, though. Natural gifts of explosiveness outweigh the mental aspect, IMO, in this instance.

so who thinks nkemdiche has a legitimate chance to fall somewhere around 10th? that idea has been circulating for a little while now.

I would say the chances are pretty good. He has not been the most consistent, I think plenty of teams will view him as scheme specific and I am not sure how high interior DL are going lately...Leonard Williams 'dropped' last year to 6 (he is miles better imo), Malcolm Brown dropped all the way to the end of the first for the Pats... the year before Aaron donald was at 13 with better production but size issues...sheldon richardson and Star Lotuleilei were 13 and 14 the year before that (who I both think were better). It really does depend on the talent year by year but I would not be surprised on a couple levels if he is there around 10 or later

Edge defenders seem to go higher in today's NFL. Interior DL just seem to be mostly undervalued now. I thought Brandon Williams would be a 2nd round pick and he went in the 3rd. That was a real shocker for me.

nkemdiche offers much better versatility than any of them though, at least i think so personally. he could be a DE in both 3-4 and 4-3, he could be a great interior guy on nickel packages, he could be a 4-3 DT, he looks to be capable of 1-gap and 2-gap, he even could possibly find himself as an edge rusher in 3-4 if he was ok with losing 10-15 lbs as he is a supreme athlete, those guys may have been better DT's but they were nowhere near the athlete that nkemdiche is, i think that helps his stock a bit as teams fall in love with athletes in the top 10.

Given the talent in this draft I do think he goes top 10, but he could slip out if QBs get some attention. I think most if not all the guys I mentioned before were scheme versatile other than Aaron Donald...so I am not sure on that one. I don't see him as a two gapper by teams who lean towards the traditional style, physically he could but I have seen him on many occasions look like he is on roller skates. Physically I am with you though he is a freak--I actually think he is best suited to drop some weight and play a hybrid edge role like Mario Williams did in a 34. He does have the talent to be a Rover and line up anywhere on the front and scheme just to get good one-on-ones.

for the bolded, thats more along the lines of what i meant by versatile, i meant teams are more likely to get enamored with the guy because of his ridiculously high ceiling.

for the underlined, im not sure what you mean by traditional, but i see him as a potential 2-gap 5 tech in a 3-4, but he absolutely shouldnt be playing a 2-gap in a 4-3, he will get washed up and down the field, but he could play both DE or 1 gap DT in a 4-3 i believe

I just meant traditional in the sense that teams who ask for two gaps down in and down out every single play...more like Pittsburgh, to some extent us, the Pats...I will contradict myself and say I think we could creatively use a guy like him though so it really does not matter (and the Pats could too). I am just skeptical on many levels of him ever reaching the athletic potential or if it will continually and always be just flash in the pan plays and quite for extended periods.
