our defense looks like it has improved recently

has pees coached his way into another year of frustration and failure in baltimore? or do you all think bisciotti will force harbs to send him packing? i believe our recent "improvements" is a direct result of lesser competition and he needs to be fired, and if he isnt, we will regret it next year.

Barnidge will eat us up.

Seahawks will torch us

We will lose out.

Pees will be gone

Some would also say that the Ravens are "lesser" competition as well.

lesser related to our schedule before the bye week, not lesser to us lol

agreed, and im hoping for this, losing out, plus one more SD win = 2nd overall pick, we take whoever is left of tunsil and bosa and move on from pees and get back in contention as early as next season. hopefully we find some sort of solution to our injuries as well

Before the bye:

299 Passing YPG allowed, 100 Rushing YPG allowed, 27 PPG allowed

After the bye:

160 Passing YPG allowed, 86 Rushing YPG allowed, 18 PPG allowed

Small sample size of two games post bye so far. However, I'm not sure the "lesser offensive talent" argument works all the way. The Rams game that might be true, although that's a run based team that only managed 82 yards on the ground and 13 points.

But keep in mind that Jacksonville isn't a pathetic offense... they average 347 YPG on offense (278 yards against us) and they average 251 YPG passing (188 yards against us). We held them right at their league average in PPG at 22.

In addition, note that Cleveland and SF are near the bottom in the NFL in both YPG and PPG (SF is dead last in both), yet when they played us:

Cleveland: averages 336 YPG, 260 passing YPG, 19 PPG scored. Against us... 540 yards allowed, 457 passing yards, 33 Points

SF: averages 295 YPG, 198 passing YPG, 14 PPG scored. Against us... 405 yards allowed, 340 passing yards, 25 Points.

So we have seen what bad offenses do against our defense previously, and it was well above what they normally do.

Could the recent success be a product of the teams we are playing? Maybe. Honestly, tonights game is a good barometer. In theory, Cleveland should do very well against our defense... they did it against us in Baltimore, same QB, largely the same offensive personnel for them.

I expect you'll see a much better performance from the defense this time around.

I think people are looking into the Rams game too much. The Rams don't really have a line and their WRs are average at best. Stopping the run is our biggest strength and we were able to take their run game away. If we continue to be good on defense I may come around but I have been let down by this defense too much to give them a pass due to 2 good games.

I'm not giving them a pass after two games either...

...BUT, the Jags game is more telling to me than the Rams game, particularly since the Jags have an ascending QB with an outstanding core of pass catchers, and we held them in check pretty well.

Again, its just hard for me to write off the "those are terrible offenses" we played against, given that both of those offenses are as good or better than offenses like the Browns and 49ers, both of whom essentially torched us, particularly in the passing game.

I think tonight will be a good barometer for growth. The truth is likely that we are probably somewhere between our performance against the Jags and our last performance against the Browns, which means we're largely average.

Agreed.  Can't remember where I read it, but going into the the Jags game, their WR tandem of Robinson and Hurns were in the top 3 in overall production.  Our D did a great job holding those 2 in check.

We still let them march down when it mattered in that game though, I just hope we aren't dumb enough to go into next year thinking that this is a good defense.

Sincere question here; what do you really expect from our Schaub led offense tonight?  He hasn't played since 2013, he has no major "weapons" to throw to and no pro bowl running back to depend on.

I definitely agree.

The Ravens defense just seems to play scared when the game is on the line, and that part hasn't changed. Also, Austin Davis just led a comeback against them that only failed because of special teams. Our defense is also still pretty back at disguising plays. Even backup QBs seem to be able to tell who's going to do what. Until those things change the Ravens' defense will continue to be average at best.

Yeah are secondary is so inconsistent.. or our pass d in general.. maybe just confusion..

Pass rush is so majorly inconsistent.

One Second McCown is twisting and turning like Russel Wilson abusing the 10millionDollarMan on a scramble drill and the next second he is getting devoured constantly by linemen.

Then the next second Austin Davis has 10years to find whoever Jimmy is covering.

And the next drive Austin Davis is eaten alive.

Someone who really impressed me tonight was Jernigan. He was consistently getting in the back field with an artillery of moves. He had a motor tonight unlike Ive seen with him. He's obviously conditioned to do it so I don't know what he has to do to do this every game, but if he does he's going to be a force.

I literally do not think Davis completed a pass to a man Jimmy was covering...

Or even targeted

I feel the pass rush is actually pretty consistent. They push QBs out of the pocket quite a lot however our often soft coverage or lack of containment is allowing them to make plays when they are forced out.

Another edge rusher for the future would be huge for this defense and could take our pass rush to the next level but secondary is a huge need for us at this point. Offense could use some players as well. Gonna be really interesting to see what we do.

You know people get a thought in there head and automatically assume it to be true every single game no matter what.

Shareece Wright has actually played pretty decent after the 49ers debacle (his first day here). Really surprising.

We played much more man coverage those last two games.  We went back to the bend and break defense today.  Luckily it was the Browns and they found a way to lose.

Pees is capable of calling good plays. The playbook is not the problem. His philosophy is. I honestly want a change for that reason alone. I do think with more talent we'd be more succesful, but I miss our punch you in the mouth defenses of the past.

It's only a completion if it's in zone coverage. Man 100% of the time!

Yeah, I know...

Been surprisingly happy with him... Did not expect this after that 49ers game, but maybe getting roasted by the coach flipped a switch

I think with more talent, we would have that punch you in the mouth style back. Our interior D line is flat out nasty, we are just missing Suggs. The secondary, I feel is another issue all together. I don't think I can remember a season where we haven't lost either Webb or Jimmy to a season ending injury..neither of those guys has had a complete offseason. That said, moving Webb to nickel has helped a lot, and Jimmy has started to come on as of late so let's hope to see continued improvement there.

One thing that I don't like with This defense is having to blitz safeties and corners to get pressure.. But I understand why he calls it.

This is part of what messes up what I want in the draft.  Jimmy and Webb haven't been horrible, they've been decent (if you expect Webb to be a #2 he's been good).  Wright has been good.  Then we'll get Will Davis back who looked very good in limited time.  As much as I want Hargreaves, I wonder how necessary it is to take a corner that early with a healthier Jimmy, Wright, and Davis as the top 3.
