When will we find out about Steve?

48 posts in this topic

We all know he already said he was going to retire at the end of this season, but many think he will change his mind which has me wondering, when do you think we will find out about his decision on retiring? Not 'if' he will retire, but 'when' we will we know of his decision.

I would plan as if he isn't coming back, even if he does you can't put all your hopes on a 37 year old WR that is coming off an Achilles tear.

Yeah I would think no news until March or April probably shortly before the draft as a courtesy to the front office so we can finalize draft strategy

I have to agree with the guys saying it wont be for a while. First he has to re-hab with no set backs then he has to see how he personally feels then he has to talk to his wife and family and then if he still has the desire to play he has to get with the team and see how he fits into their plans and my guess is at that time we probably hear something.

They'd be a fool to use that draft strategy. They need to pull a trade during the offseason, period. They have draft capital during the draft. And some spare parts to compensate for at upgrade at the position. Some guys who don't translate here could be supplanted in effort to maneuver as well.

I would assume they would be getting medicals and such as he hasn't officially retired. Good business is good business. If he doesn't recover in a needed/reasonable timeframe. The ballot maybe cast for him, regardless. Sure they may look as a compliment or a luxury. But that should the primary extent of it (IMHO).

The only issue would be salary cap. We have the draft picks to do it

I'm not totally in favor of relying solely on the draft. The salary cap always works itself out. It wouldn't take ton of an investment.

I'd try to pull a trade for a Desean Jackon, or Alshon using the virtue or possible ramifications of falling short while on the clock. We won't be in totally camp hell. Just not in the most advantageous position.

I don't know, and it should honestly be in the back of this team's mind. I love Steve Smith's toughness and aggressiveness, I love how no matter what he leaves everything on the field. However, this is a 37 Year old man coming off an Achilles injury after a hefty workload. If we think about him coming back as a No.1 WR and coming back to where he started, and not making any effort to fix this WR corps, then I'm calling for a resignation.

I think he returns. You don't want a great one leaving the game headed to an IR and be the end of it.

You want to play till the last minute of the season is over and say your proper goodbye.

I see him comming back.

At least the injury happened early in the season. When Suggs tore his and came back it was pretty quickly, at this time frame I think Steve can come back as close as possible to 100% as he's going to get. Is there any chance he starts the season on the pup?

extremely doubtful. In my eyes if he's not ready to go week 1 then he will call it quits. Worst case scenario he will be on the active 53 but miss the first few games, but he has plenty of time to recover ..it's more about his age and if he feels he can still be explosive after the recovery.

obviously I hope he can come back, we need his leadership and mentorship for the young wrs. Wasn't he easily going to make it in the top ten receiving yards this year if he just played the full season?

I'm sure. He was on pace to top his numbers from last year by a pretty large margin. He was headed for almost 1300 yards and 7 tds, and that was with missing a game or two and having microfractures in his back.

This thinking is pathetic. Just let the poor guy retire. Its not his fault the front office dropped the ball on getting good reciever talent around here

It would be a good thing to have him back. Just can't count on a 37 yr old coming off Achilles to be the #1. It would be more interesting to find the next SS or #1 receiver in the draft with so many good receivers coming out lately. It would be nice to get Boyd,Thomas or Doctson early round2 or trade back into round1. A left tackle like tunsil and receiver completes the ravens offense. It would be nice if SS could contribute.

Alright. Let him heal. Suggs returned in what 7 months. SSR hurt his achilles last month ish correct? Okay. That's one month down. Let him also return to football shape. Not like he needs to study the playbook.

If he wants to play, let him. But we shouldn't overly depend on him. I think drafting an option in rounds 2 or 3 and letting them redshirt for a year behind Steve is honestly a good idea. One of the benefits of having a veteran is he helps the younger guys. Why do you think CJ has progressed so nicely(sure, Arthur hasn't. But he doesn't really have game)? Williams and Jernigan had Ngata. ZDS seems to be improving from what I've seen.

Steve Smith is on NFL Today this morning, and the one guy said Steve has an announcement and said "how much longer will you be playing in the NFL?". Steve said "17 more years" laughing. Maybe he's going to make an announcement here soon? Or that was his way of saying something?

it was a joke. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't imagine he will be making any official announcements until after he completes the rehab process.
