[News] Ravens Claim Jimmy Clausen As Backup Quarterback

80 posts in this topic

Clausen to Schaub is what Schaub is to Flacco...

Man, these are the moments when you realize you're actually glad the season is over anyway... If it was still a hot season, I wouldn't be too happy about this guy... Luckily, at this point our backup QB could be Joe's son...

I would be so depressed if we having the season we were expected to have and Joe got hurt. However,  I think Joe getting hurt may set us back a little in the development of our young receiving corp without Joe sling the ball.

I like this better then Kapernick!

I'll second that

Horrid stats but maybe he'll turn all that around... Ain't like we can roll with our punter as the back up right?

Week three for the Bears, 63 yards 2 interceptions. I'm glad he has a "mental leg up" and he knows the "framework". Qb rating of 65.3 over two years. Have we really sunk this low. I'm surprised Mink would even print this for us to read. It's been a terrible season, Mink. Now you're trying to spoil Thanksgiving for us.

I would be so depressed if we having the season we were expected to have and Joe got hurt. However,  I think Joe getting hurt may set us back a little in the development of our young receiving corp without Joe sling the ball.

While the wideouts we are playing are relatively young, they aren't exactly rookies.

Kamar Aiken is 26 and in his 4th season and he's showing why he was expendable. He didn't carve out a slot with the Bills, Bears, or the Patriots. He's got questionable hands and isn't exactly electric. He'd be a decent complimentary player as a 3rd wide out. Clearly not a #1 or #2. At this point it would be a little bit of wishful thinking to ponder him becoming anything more than what he is. He can work on his hands.

His partner in crime right now is another veteran in Chris Givens who is actually a year younger than Aiken, but is going into his 5th year. He spent all of his prior time with the Rams and simply got lost in the shuffle as others stepped over him on the depth chart. So far I am not impressed. He's not getting open and with the game on the line and time running out he was too busy jawing at his former teammates instead of hurrying back to the line of scrimmage for a spike to kill the clock. Again, five years in the NFL is enough time to show what you've got.

Then there is the one year wonder Marlon Brown. I thought he was going to be a good weapon in the redzone and be a good possession guy. Only problem is dude can't get open and he also has the dropsies. He's in his third season and time to cut bait and go with somebody new.

Now there is recently added to the roster Jeremy Butler. He's the only rookie really in the mix right now and he's just starting to get playing time. He's busting his butt on the practice field and forcing the Ravens to take notice after missing his entire time up to this point with an injury. He's showing some promise and I think he should start grabbing snaps away from Givens.

Then there are the Tight Ends. Flacco was already in good sync with Gillmore and I think he showed he was in good time with Williams. Unfortunately Boyle is hurt and probably done for the year, but he was the third stringer anyway.

The other young guys are on the shelf (Perriman and Campanaro) so it isn't like Flacco is missing time with them while he's out with his injury. I get what you were trying to say, but I don't really think it is an issue. I don't really expect to see some of these names on the roster next season. I could see the Ravens keeping Aiken and Butler. Bye bye Brown, bye bye Givens.

Right player, right price. He must've come real cheap.

Are we supposed to get excited about this? Why not just give us Bryn Renner, throw us fans a bone, give us something. Just when we thought it couldn't get any worse.

Thought Ponder was a better talent (that's a truly relative term for backups) and Renner more upside than Clausen, who has proven to be ineffective.

With this move, I may actually not watch some Ravens games this year. I despise this move. If they were just going to pick Clausen up they should have gone with Renner. The Bears only cut him so that Trestman couldn't get Fales. Why didn't you report that Ryan? At least with Renner fans had some hope something to look forward to and a feel good story. Clausen, wasn't he the qb that Charlie Weis destroyed in his epic fail (can't Believe in saying that but in this case it fits) as coach of Notre Dame?

man i hope flacco can be ready for training camp but we need to find a reliable back up so i hope schaub does well but it will be tough with what he has to work with.

I can't think he would be anywhere close to as cheap as Renner. This move stinks, and I didn't think they could do anything to make me not watch but this is consciously worse than taking Billy Cundiff on as a Kicker.

Some people don't understand that Joe saved the Ravens but he isn't doing what he did to get the job done and has lost it in my eyes! His throws are off he under throws everyone because his timing is off is why Jacoby always had to stop and turn to make receptions and the rams game he jus stunk! Clausen is just a backup but the Ravens need to keep a good veteran as backup period! Don't sleep on Matt people!

Picking up Clausen because he has "history" with Trestman is odd. Don't see any upside with Clausen. Should have considered Renner a little more.

PD96 you realize in the Rams game that Joe's line was missing starting LT C and G right? The same back up LT ranked worst in the NFL and the same one who crushed his knee. Backup C who has no college experience at C. Joe is also missing his TE #1 and WR #1,2,3 & 5 and RB #1 & 2 all in IR. I'm guessing you either don't really understand or just plain ignore these facts. You want comparison, Brady last night was looking bad but he STILL had his TE #1 (best in the game mind you) and WR #2 and #3 and RB #2 & 3 though he has similar OL issues. Take away Brady's TE #1 and WR #2&3 and RB #2 and let's see how he looks.... Or even just remove gronk. Joe was single handedly keeping this team afloat. He was elevating everyone around him. So don't tell me he's lost it when constantly fleeing for his life when guys don't run the right route it give up on the play or stop running as fast because they can't check for the ball and run at the same time. Like every single other qb he needs time and players around him who do what they are supposed to do. I'm all for Schaub and hope he does well, but we will all know one way or another how much Joe was doing for this team soon enough. Monday could go either way but after that film on Schaub teams will be able to properly vet him as a qb this year with lackluster wr talent.

Come on, people, he's the back-up to the back-up. You were expecting maybe Peyton Manning? And the article did say they were considering signing Bryn Renner to the practice squad. At this point we need bodies, and all the "good" candidates are long gone. Whoever mentioned Kaepernick should know he just had surgery so he isn't available.

You know what, maybe we are "killing the messenger" with Mink. He is a company man and likely knows that he has to "put lipstick on a pig" so to speak. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.

I don't understant why not sign Bryn Renner, he played so well in pre-season. I think he desearves a chance...
