Quinton Coples (OLB-Jets) waived

27 posts in this topic

This is one I hope we jump on. We need someone, anyone who could improve our pass rush. I know he's still on his rookie deal, anybody know his cap hit for the rest of the year should we claim him?

If someone claims him off waivers youre on the hook for 7 ish mil 5th yr option next year. So he will likely clear waivers, and become a free agent, at which point I'd be all over him on a 2/3 yr deal

I'm not positive, but I thought if a player is waived or traded, they aren't eligible for the 5th year option, unless the original team signs him. Could be wrong though.

The problem with FA is Rex. Claiming him may be the only option to get him.

That would be the ideal situation  Like someone else said, I don't see him clearing though.

Claiming Quinton Coples off waivers costs a fully GTD $534,840 this year & includes taking his $7.751M 2016 option year GTD for injury now.

He's a much better fit playing as a 4-3 DE than say 3-4 OLB. I can see a 4-3 team claiming him to try him out at DE and see how he plays there.

He's a downgrade on Upshaw...

Didn't he come in playing d line?

Insert thread about signing him in RT in 3 2 1...

Called it :P

Wouldn't claim him off waivers, if we want to bring him in though and see what he can do for us the rest of the year, I wouldn't be opposed

I wouldn't claim him either. When I made the thread I did under the assumption he cleared and we offered him another cheap deal. And everyone else has one. I wanted my own go after this guy thread.

Why not sign him on a cheap deal? Notice I didn't say claim him.

Agreed. The season is truly over without Flacco, why not let him show us what he can do in our defense on a super low risk deal. If he plays well he could be a nice depth add and if he's a bum we can move on, no harm no foul. I think quite a few teams have that idea though, Coples will have a few suitors if he clears waivers and can pick where he wants to play.

I wouldn't mind signing him as well. I'm still surprised that he was moved to OLB after his rookie season. I thought he his skill-set was better suited for being an end.

Slightly interested, but he's not much of a pass rusher.  He's essentially been Upshaw at OLB.  I'd be interested in him as a DE possibility, though that seems to be one of our least needed positions at the moment.

I will give you credit in that this is one of the more realistic ones given our hole at OLB. Don't think Coples is that guy but I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him here and seeing what he could bring over these final games although it would have to be cheap. Will be interesting to see if he clears waivers.

This was the main reason I was thinking.  I'm not sure, but wasn't he initially playing DL for the Jets, then was moved because it was crowded?

I just think he could be a versatile piece for the defense and supply depth at both end and olb if necessary.

You are correct.

His move to OLB just didn't suit him because lateral quickness was never the strength of his game, but I wouldn't mind giving him a chance as a 3-4 DE. He's certainly got the size for it and he's shown an ability to rush from the interior in college. He was just a poor fit in the Jets defense.

The Ravens are really deep at DT, but at DE, they have Guy and Canty... might as well see if he can be an upgrade

Supposedly a bad fit for the Jets as a LBer, but for the Ravens 3-4 scheme a welcome addition! We are 4th on the waiver wire, so why are we waiting? Sign him up, see how he responds to our scheme. What do we have to lose? Especially with Suggs aging, Urban, Coples, Doom, Suggs and Upshaw will be a substantial force. We don't even know Upshaw's status at this point...

Coples is an interesting prospect. He kinda reminds me of McPhee but not as effective of an OLB. I think he could apply pressure in a similar role. The problem is that he needs to clear waivers and he needs to sign here. We can't exactly offer him much to sign here.
