Should we rest some players at this point?

61 posts in this topic

The amount and significance of the injuries that have happened this year is mind-blowing and just sad to see. Do you think we should rest some of our players or have them play less snaps to avoid making that IR list any longer?

I move that we put everyone on the 53-man roster on IR, and that every week we pick up 46 guys from practice squads around the league and either let them cop the wear and tear of the season or prove themselves and become a player we sign for next season.

Haha that's a good one. I'm just in shock after the Flacco and Forsett injuries today. They were both nasty injuries and it's just so hard to see it happen to guys like that.

Start them against the Browns to see what Schaub can do with them and if it sucks then start resting people.. not like we have that many quality players even left to rest.

I agree. There aren't even that many quality starters left to rest :( It's so sad. The Browns game could get ugly with Schaub though.

Genius, and pick guys up from our rivals as well to deplete them

Injuries happen. We have to roll with what we got. The youngsters will get a few more snaps a game but that's about it. I think it's funny that some people think putting joe on ir was our way of discreetly tanking.

Yea. But at this point, it makes zero sense to keep putting Dumervil out there with a nagging knee injury. Just rest him for the rest of the season.

What do we gain from putting him out there.

Others to think about resting?

Webb/Jimmy

Daryl Smith

We need to see what we have in our depth and who needs to be cut from the team.

First if you play the game scared then you will not give a 100% and you will get hurt. but if I had to rest some players or a player, it would be Jimmy Smith, he is injury prone and I really think he is not healthy,,

I agree. I think this should be considered. Guys like Jimmy, Webb, and Dumervil are all injury prone guys that we will need next year.

You think players would actually want to rest? If you love the sport and love what you do, youd wanna play. I know I would.

Yeah most of them probably wouldn't want to rest, but it could be an option. They rest players in the NBA near the end of a season.

They rest NBA players on teams that are going to the playoffs, also known as resting players while you are WINNING.

I probably couldn't provide an example of a professional sports team telling healthy players to sit out when they are losing just so they won't get hurt.

This isn't a consideration by the FO or the coaching staff, so its pointless to continue this topic.

No. If we keep shelving guys for the year, we're going to have to sign replacements. That'll just eat into the available cap that we have to fix this mess next year. I want to carry over as much cap as we can. If we're talking the last couple of weeks of the season, then yeah. Inactivate some of the proven guys and let the young ones get some experience.

Yeah I think it could be an option at the END of the year (like last 2 or 3 games). We have 6 games left so I guess it's a bit early.

With all the injuries they could be considering it because they can also give some valuable playing time to the young players on the team and get them some experience moving forward.

I'm not sure I understand the title. Was it done for 'clickbait'?

Would these players be "rested" for the playoffs that we aren't making in 7 weeks? Or would they be rested for some other reason that comes off as viable?

"Rested" so they don't get hurt. Our players are dropping like flies. This would allow some unproven young guys to get quality playing time too.

Resting guys or having them play less snaps doesn't really reduce the risk of injury. If anything it might increase it because they won't be as ready when they do get on the field.

Plus anyone worth "protecting" plays at a position where were already depleted due to injuries. Yanda, Jimmy, Webb, Doom... Who's gonna play behind them?

And then we'd likely have to sign more depth which unnecessarily chews into valuable cap space.

The only candidate I see for maybe reducing snaps would be Daryl Smith to try and get Arthur Brown and Orr some more snaps, but Daryl's having a heck of a season and may be in Pro Bowl consideration. I'd hate to completely destroy any small chance he has of getting an individual accomplishment like that especially considering how few chances he may have left at something like that.

This kind of thinking always back fires. Plus putting all the backups and young players out there without any veteran leadership isn't going to benefit them. Sending them out to the slaughter isn't going to help them improve.
